Missouri hunters harvest more than 80,000 deer

JEFFERSON CITY, Mo. - Missouri deer hunters have harvested more than 80,000 this weekend.

The Missouri Department of Conservation reports that count includes more than 46,000 antlered bucks around the state. The Ozarks makes up some significant numbers in those counts. As of 4 p.m. Sunday, hunters in Texas County had bagged more than 1,800 total deer; while Howell County reported more than 1,700 total harvested. Texas County lead the state in the number of antlered bucks killed with more than 1,000.

The state has also seen an increase in young hunters. Governor Jay Nixon’s office reports the number of youth hunting permits has increased substantially during his time as governor, from 67,750 in 2009 to 79,357 in 2014.

According to the Missouri Department of Conservation, deer hunting is also an important economic driver in Missouri and gives a $1 billion annual boost to the state and local economies.
