JEFFERSON CITY, Mo. (AP) - Gov. Jay Nixon signed several bills into law, including a measure that brings Missouri's law on deadly force into compliance with a Supreme Court ruling from more than 30 years ago. Missouri State law for an officer's use of deadly force is now in line with a U.S. Supreme Court ruling in 1985 that says police can't shoot at a fleeing person unless the officer reasonably believes the individual poses a significant physical danger. Missouri's law didn't previously specify that an officer must believe the fleeing suspect is dangerous.
The discrepancy gained attention after the fatal police shooting of Michael Brown in Ferguson in August 2014.
Nixon also signed six other measures, including one that creates new sentencing guidelines for minors convicted of first-degree murder.
