Clinton man charged with shooting at police

Henry County Prosecuting Attorney Richard Shields has announced that he has filed charges related to the incident that took place on South Main Street in Clinton late Saturday afternoon.

The charges were filed Sunday morning. Rick Lee McCartney, 46, Clinton, has been charged with three counts of assault in the first degree involving a special victim and three counts of armed criminal action.

The assault in the first degree counts are class A felonies and each are punishable by a term of from ten to thirty years or life imprisonment in the Missouri Department of Corrections.

The armed criminal action counts allege that McCartney committed the assault in the first degree counts by, with and through, the knowing use, assistance and aid of a deadly weapon. Armed criminal action is an unclasped felony punishable by a term of not less than three years in the Missouri Department of Corrections.

According to a Probable Cause Statement filed by the Clinton Police Department, Clinton Officers were dispatched to a reported disturbance in the 900 block of South Main Street. As they entered the residence to investigate the disturbance they heard McCartney threaten to kill them. The officers retreated to cover behind a patrol vehicle and shortly thereafter they, and a Henry County Deputy Sheriff who had responded to assist them were shot at. Fortunately, none of them was struck. Several more rounds were shot by the suspect and eventually he was taken into custody.

McCartney is being held on Armed Criminal Action Charged -$100,000 cash only bond, 1st Degree Felony Assault on a LEO - $500,000 cash/surety. He is being held in the Henry County Jail in Clinton, Missouri.
