Obituary - Martha Gayle Vilmer

Martha Gayle Vilmer, 75, of Merriam Kansas, passed away at the Crown Care Center in Harrisonville, Wednesday March 13, 2019, after a long illness. She was born August 7, 1943 to Jesse Lee and Mary Ellen (Danner) Gregory, the sixth child and third daughter. She lived most of her childhood in the Kansas City area and attended East High School.

She was married to Richard Allen 1959 to 1972 and to this union was born, one daughter, Suzanne Elaine Allen.

Gayle married Dr. Steven Vilmer in 1974 and was his “bride" until his passing in 2016.

Through the years, Gayle was a member of numerous organizations but was especially proud of her work in child safety programs dealing with child abuse prevention and child car safety and was a leading member of the committee to institute the Missouri’s child safety seat program for which she received a certificate of commendation from the state Governor. Before her illness, she had also worked as a cardiopulmonary specialist and educator.

Gayle was preceded in death by her parents, husband Steve Vilmer, her daughter Suzanne, one sister, Dorothy (Finkle) McCullough, three brothers, Robert O. (Bobbie) Gregory, Walter D. Gregory and Jack R. Gregory, and a foster sister, Wilma Jefferys.

She is survived by her sister, Nancy R. Presley, of Nixa MO and many nieces, nephews, and cousins.

A graveside memorial service was held, Tuesday, March 19, 2019 at the Highland Cemetery in Prairie Village, KS, through the Heartland Funeral Home. Officiating the service was a nephew, Randolph K. Finkle.

The service was attended by many nieces, nephews, family members and friends who loved her very much.
