Charges pending in last months fatality accident in Cass County

One woman died in a serious crash on May 23 in rural Cass County, and a second woman died recently as a result of the crash. Authorities say charges are pending against Caleb J. Parrott of Cleveland, Missouri.

Retha “Norene” Schmidt Burkitt, 77, died on May 28, five days after she was involved in a two-vehicle crash at Missouri D and East 215th Street in Cass County. Burkitt, of Cleveland, was one of three passengers inside a 1995 Plymouth Voyager driven by 78-year-old James S. Kinney on the night of May 23.

One of the passengers, 76-year-old Deanna M. Kinney, was pronounced dead on the night of the accident shortly after being taken to Belton Regional Medical Center.

The Missouri State Highway Patrol says the accident happened after a 19-year-old man driving a 1995 Ford Ranger struck the back of the van. Both vehicles were headed southbound on Missouri D after 9 p.m. May 23. The report said the Voyager had been stopped to make a left turn when the truck ran into the back of the van. Both vehicles were towed from the scene.

Authorities said the driver of the van, James S. Kinney, and another occupant, identified in the report as Nathaniel C. Nannen, 65, were injured, but refused medical treatment at the scene.

Burkitt was taken to Research Medical Hospital where she died later of her injuries. The driver of the truck was taken to Research Medical Hospital by ambulance with moderate injuries.

Sgt. Collin Stosberg, a Missouri State Highway Patrol spokesman, said charges were pending against
19 year old Caleb J. Parrott of Cleveland, Missouri.

Cass County Sheriff’s Office assisted troopers at the crash scene. The investigation is ongoing.
