Update: Bates County Sheriff's Office searching for subject after standoff in rural SW Butler

On Friday May 5, 2017 at approximately 6pm Bates County Sheriff’s Deputies and the Bates County Ambulance was dispatched to 6856 SW County Road 4036 rural Butler MO 64730 in reference to a dog attacking a man. On arrival they found the property owner laying on the ground bleeding from multiple locations including his head, face and arms area.

The property owner stated that his son’s Pitbull had attacked him and that his son had taken the dog and retreated into the residence. The son was identified as Brian Ferrel.

Brian has multiple felonies failed to appear in court warrants for Possession of a Dangerous Drugs, Burglaries and Receiving Stolen Property. Total bonds on his warrants are $70,000 cash or surety.

Additional deputies were called to the scene to help secure the residence. Deputies could hear noises in the house indicating that he was possibly still in the house. The Bates County Sheriff’s Emergency Response Team was activated and attempted to get him to surrender from the house.


After approximately 6 hours and after obtaining a search warrant for the residence the SERT team made entry into the house. While inside the house the suspect, Brian Ferrel was not inside but the dog was. The dog was taken into custody and transported to a veterinarian’s office to be observed for rabbis

The victim of the dog bite was transported to the Bates County Hospital where he was air lifted to a trauma center in Kansas City.

Brian Ferrel is currently not in custody and is a suspect in additional crimes in the neighborhood. If you have any information about the whereabouts of Brian Ferrel please contact the Sheriff’s Office or your local Police Department.
