From the City of Harrisonville

It should come as no surprise to anyone that the principal cause of the electric outages on Tuesday was ice, ice and more ice caused by Winter Storm Oliver.

Totaling the stats, city staff took 204 calls for service to correct 160 separate outages. Approximately two-thirds of those occurred when a circuit in the Royal Street electric substation failed. Royal Street serves the northeast area of town.

During such instances, staff would normally transfer electric service distribution to run through the North substation while repairs are made and the interruption in customers’ power would be only a few minutes. But on Tuesday, because of the ice, the switch would not engage and workers spent most of the day diagnosing and correcting that problem.

Once the substation issue was resolved, crews went on to answer calls regarding downed lines, broken or bent tree limbs and other problems associated with the storm. The tree crew worked until midnight and the line crew until 2 a.m. to clear all the issues.
