Farm Bureau’s Thanksgiving Food Survey Shows Bittersweet Results

The results for Missouri Farm Bureau’s annual market basket survey on the costs of a Thanksgiving meal are out. The survey is conducted in conjunction with a national price poll by the American Farm Bureau Federation.

To make food-cost comparisons fair from year to year, premade items like cubed stuffing mix, pie shells and pumpkin pie mix are included. “Your table will likely have something similar, but perhaps made from grandma’s favorite or even a secret family recipe,” said Diane Olson, director of Missouri Farm Bureau’s promotion and education program.

Chicken pox exposure to Butler R-V students possible

A letter has been sent home with the Elementary Students enrolled at the Butler R-V School district to inform parents of possible exposure to chicken pox. The health department recommends that you watch your child for signs and symptoms of the disease.

Chicken Pox is a common illness that causes an itchy rash and red spots or blisters all over the body. It can spread easily by an infected person whom sneezes, coughs or shares food or drinks.

Symptoms are fever, headache and sore throat. Your child may feel sick, tired, and not very hungry. The rash usually appears about 1-2 days after the first symptoms start.

Aspirin or Ibuprofen should never be given with chicken pox, due to the risk of Rye’s syndrome. Parents should check with their child’s physician before giving any medicine.

If you find your child has chicken pox, contact the Butler Elementary School Nurse at 660-679-6591 extension 170.

Your child should remain out of school until all the chicken pox lesions have crusted over, which takes approximately 5 days.

The best way to prevent your child from getting chicken pox is through vaccination. These are available at your local health department.

A chicken pox vaccine is now available for children 12 month and older, and for teens and adults who have not had the illness.

The History of Veteran's Day

History of Veterans Day

World War I – known at the time as “The Great War” - officially ended when the Treaty of Versailles was signed on June 28, 1919, in the Palace of Versailles outside the town of Versailles, France. However, fighting ceased seven months earlier when an armistice, or temporary cessation of hostilities, between the Allied nations and Germany went into effect on the eleventh hour of the eleventh day of the eleventh month. For that reason, November 11, 1918, is generally regarded as the end of “the war to end all wars.”

Soldiers of the 353rd Infantry near a church at Stenay, Meuse in France, wait for the end of hostilities. This photo was taken at 10:58 a.m., on November 11, 1918, two minutes before the armistice ending World War I went into effect

In November 1919, President Wilson proclaimed November 11 as the first commemoration of Armistice Day with the following words: "To us in America, the reflections of Armistice Day will be filled with solemn pride in the heroism of those who died in the country’s service and with gratitude for the victory, both because of the thing from which it has freed us and because of the opportunity it has given America to show her sympathy with peace and justice in the councils of the nations…"

The original concept for the celebration was for a day observed with parades and public meetings and a brief suspension of business beginning at 11:00 a.m.

How to Buy, Thaw and Roast Your Turkey

Thanksgiving is almost here and it is time to think about the bird. This is your quick guide to purchasing, thawing and baking the centerpiece of your Thanksgiving table.

Tammy Roberts, Bates County University of Missouri Extension nutrition specialist recommends that you purchase one pound of turkey per person if you want to have enough for leftovers. If you don’t want extra turkey at your house or are purchasing a bone-in turkey breast, plan on ¾ of a pound per person. The rule of thumb for purchasing boneless turkey breast is ½ pound per person.

Have you ever wondered whether you should buy a hen or a Tom turkey? “The terms ‘hen’ and ‘Tom’ simply refer to the size of the turkey. Tom turkeys are the larger ones and the hens are the smaller ones,” says Roberts.

Local artist gains attention of the U.S. Postal Service

Rebekah Nastav

Some are gifted with the knack and Rebekah Nastav of rural Amoret certainly has that gift- to the extent that her artwork is now being featured on U.S. stamps, namely the Junior Duck Stamp (a redhead duck, shown below).

It's no easy task to get the attention of those who judge the artwork- but her perseverance has certainly paid off. An equally striking painting of a Blue Winged Teal won 6th place for Nastav as her creations were considered for the U.S Fish & Wildlife conservation stamps program.

In her own words, Rebekah reveals more about her humble journey:

Nastav's 6th place entry, a Blue
Winged Teal
I have been painting and drawing since I was a toddler. My interest has always been in animals. I started taking my art seriously and competitively at the age of 13, when I won a first place ribbon for my age category in the 2004 Missouri Federal Junior Duck Stamp Contest, and again a first place ribbon in 2005. You may recall that when I was 15, I entered the same contest again for the third time. My entry, titled "Morning Swim," featuring a single Redhead drake swimming in the morning light, won Best Of Show for the state of Missouri. My entry then went on to compete with the other 49 states, and was finally selected as the first place winner of the national 2006 Federal Junior Duck Stamp Contest. I entered the following two years and won third place both times. In 2009 after I graduated high school (which, by the way, I was homeschooled), I was old enough to enter the Federal Duck Stamp Contest. Since the competition is much higher in quality as well as quantity, my entry (a single wood duck drake) did not get through the first round of judging. The following year was the same with my entry featuring a northern shoveler.

More information regarding Oklahoma earthquake...

The 4.7 and 5.6 earthquakes that rocked central Oklahoma this weekend have certainly been a hot topic of discussion, as many claim claim the ground waves were felt locally.

Earthquakes are not unusual in Oklahoma, but they often are too small to be felt. From 1972-2008 about 2-6 earthquakes a year were recorded by the USGS National Earthquake Information Center. In 2008, earthquake activity began to increase, with over a dozen earthquakes recorded that year. In 2009 the rate continued to climb, with nearly 50 quakes recorded--many big enough to be felt. The earthquakes from 1973-2007 were scattered broadly across the east-central part of the state.

More information about the Oklahoma quakes can be found here: http://earthquake.usgs.gov/earthquakes/recenteqsus/Quakes/usb0006klz.php#summary
