Butler Chamber of Commerce Membership Dinner set for March 22nd
The Butler chamber of Commerce will host the Annual Banquet on March 22nd. Tickets are priced at $22.00 each and may be purchased from the Butler Chamber of Commerce 7 West Dakota Street. The office is open from 10 am to 3 pm , Monday through Friday.
Invitations and with an RSVP will be mailed within the next few weeks. Watch your mail box and remember to get your reservations by the indicated deadline on your invitation.

Notes from the Bates County Memorial Hospital board meeting last night
It appears that the question of Dr. Curtis Long's clinic being able to do his own x-rays, will continue. A number of visitors were on hand at the Bates County Hospital Board's monthly meeting, hoping that will be the case.
Jim Shade, president of the hospital board, said, barring legal problems from the Feds, all will stay as it is. Actually, the problem lies with questions dealing with technical works like changing analog to digital, that the average person doesn't comprehend. Shade said they would know for sure by the next board meeting in a couple of weeks.
Extra chairs had to be set up for those who had signed up to speak in behalf of Dr. Curtis Long's practice of handling the x-rays at his clinic at 2000 West Chestnut Street here in Butler.
Dr. Long has been practicing in Butler for almost 50 years...since 1964, and of course has long been affiliated with the hospital, sending persons to the hospital as patients when they required hospital services.
The hospital board had requested that he have patients who need x-rays done, to make a second appointment, and have the x-ray work done at the hospital.
Those who had signed up to speak to the board Tuesday night, were all in friendly agreement that the second appointment and the waiting extra time to know the results, would make a hardship, and result in extra time before those results would be passed along to the client. It would be especially difficult, for the elderly, and especially for the handicapped. One person was there, helping another who was in a motorized wheelchair, and it was pointed out that with the seat belts and other necessities in getting him even to the clinic is quite a chore, to say nothing of having to make a second trip to the hospital. And to say nothing of Missouri weather, which can be bad, almost at a moment's notice.
The hospital board consists of its president, Jim Shade, as well as Patti Bruto, Rusty Hamilton, Jerry Jones, and Harold Caskey.

Butler teen hurt in crash near Adrian last night
An single car accident around 11:20 p.m. last night sent a Butler teen to the hospital with moderate injuries. Melody E. Raney, 17, of Butler was traveling northbound on 71 highway just south of the Adrian exit when her 2008 Ford went off the left side of the roadway, struck a culvert, overturned and came to a rest on its wheels.
The report filed by MSHP Trooper Dodson shows the driver was wearing a seat belt at the time of the accident. Ms. Raney was transported to Bates County Memorial Hospital for treatment.

Down to 43 tonight with an 80% chance of rain. It is being reported by the National Weather Service in Pleasant Hill that the storms, expected to arrive closer to midnight, are capable of producing small hail and winds up to 60 mph.

Mary Jo Jukes, 68 of Butler, died February 27, 2012 at her home in Butler. She was born June 8, 1943 in Edgerton, Kansas to Hobart Robert and Mary Rose (Loftus) Gillihan. She was united in marriage to Noel Jukes December 31, 1966 in Richmond, Kansas.
Jo was preceded in death by her parents; a brother, Paul Gillihan, and one son, Larry Jukes. She is survived by her husband Noel of the home; and their beloved dog, Hershey; daughter Dawn Grace of Lee’s Summit, Missouri; son James Jukes and wife Holly of Kansas City, Kansas; brother Kenny Gillihan and wife Kathie of Bucyrus, Kansas; brother Donnie Gillihan and wife Kathie of Topeka, Kansas; brother Rick Gillihan of Gardner, Kansas; sister Gerry Sue Brite and husband Gene of Gardner, Kansas; grandchildren Kashmir and Sebastian; as well as nieces and nephews. Jo loved life, and she enjoyed playing golf. She was very proud of her family.

Ongoing investigation results in drug related arrests

The Bates County Sheriff’s Office and the CNET Drug Task force has wrapped up a drug investigation that lasted approximately two months and spanned multiple counties. The investigation started in late December with multiple purchases of drugs from multiple locations.
The Operation kicked off on February 15th with a search warrant at 406 East Cedar Street in Rich Hill. The house was occupied by one adult female and one juvenile female. The adult female was taken into custody at the time of the search warrant. The male who was a target of the investigation was not at home at the time. He later returned to the residence and was taken into custody. Charges are pending on the male subject. During the search of the residence, marijuana and drug paraphernalia were recovered. The female was later released to care for the juvenile. Charges on the female are being reviewed at this time.
At the same time, members of the Sheriff’s Office began to search for a second subject of its investigation and a short time later located the subject at 419 East Elm Street in Rich Hill. John W Danner and another female was located at the residence in the front yard and taken into custody. A search of the subjects revealed a small amount of marijuana and drug paraphernalia. Danner was charged with Distribution of a controlled substance and bond was set at $25,000.00 cash or surety. Charges are being reviewed on the female.
The investigation continued on Feb. 17th with members of the Vernon County Sheriff’s Office, Bates County Sheriff’s Office and the CNET Drug Task Force executing a search warrant in Nevada, Missouri. The subject of the investigation was not at home at the time. Charges of Distribution of a controlled substance are being sought in connection with the search warrant.
A third search warrant was executed during the operation in another jurisdiction. Details of that search warrant are unavailable at this time due to the ongoing investigation.
During Operation Spring Weed Killer approximately 9 pounds of Marijuana, 59 Alprazolam Pills, 29 Lorazepam Pills, 89 Hydrocodone Pills, and $2000 in cash were recovered.
Charges are expected to be filed on several more subjects in connection with Operation Spring Weed Killer.
Sheriff Anderson says “We will continue to work with the community to aggressively pursue those connected to the sales or usage of illegal drugs.”

Effective Feb. 16th, I was appointed as Deputy Director of the Bates County Office of Emergency Management, replacing Bill Dellipaoli. Bill stepped down but is remaining a vital part of the organization as Radio Communications Officer.
I will be working closely with Director Ron Nissen to continue establishing and maintaining cooperation between Emergency agencies throughout Bates County. Bates County Emergency agencies continue to maintain a high level of readiness to respond in the event of a public safety situation. Cooperation is vital when assets from other localities, State and Federal organizations is required.
The rapid increase of social media and its ability to keep users informed has reached the Bates County EMA. We will be using social media to update Bates County Citizens on Events such as the upcoming Tornado Drill or other safety programs. We will also pass along weather advisories or significant events that may directly affect public safety.

'Miles for Hope' walk/run to be held in Butler
Join the team as they walk for “ Chloe” during the “Miles for Hope “ campaign on April 22nd. Teams will be walking in hope of finding a cure for brain tumors. The 5k Walk/run starts at 9 am with registration at 8 am and will be held at the Butler Park. Miles for hope is a non-profit organization located in Clearwater Florida.

Computers 4 U under new ownership
Dale Bishop, former owner of Computers 4 U in Adrian has announced that he is getting out of the computer business to pursue other interests- however the new owner will bring the same professional, local service we've come to appreciate.
Jason Rugg has purchased Computers 4 U and comes to the table with a lot of know how and promises to make the transition as seamless as possible. Rugg, a 2004 graduate of Adrian High School has about 8 years of experience working on computers, plus 7 years working as an engineer in Overland Park, KS. Add to that, he has worked as a technical design engineer for a logistics company in Belton, Mo.
Computers 4 U will relocate just down the road to the basement of Rugg's residence at 920 N. Business 71 Highway in Adrian- a logical move, since Jason has already set up the basement for his business that includes wide format printing of anything up to 42 inches wide by any length (visible in photo below).
To help with the transition, computers may still be dropped off and picked up at the old location for now, as Dale Bishop is working with Jason to make the changeover as smooth as possible.
We spoke candidly with Jason during the Adrian Business Expo last Saturday and learned that he is quite excited about the new venture and keeps quite busy as he also works as the sound technician for the Adrian Christian Church and does work on the church computers as well.

New Outer Road Project to Begin between Butler and Rich Hill
A project to build outer roads on either side of Route 71 between Rich Hill and Butler begins the week of March 5, the Missouri Department of Transportation said.
The outer road project is part of the upgrading of U.S. 71 to Interstate 49 between Kansas City and Pineville that has been ongoing for several years. MoDOT is working toward I-49 designation by the end of 2012.
During the week of March 5, contractor crews will begin clearing and grading.
The project involves building outer roads on either side of Route 71.
The west outer road will run between County Road 3778 and the Marais des Cygnes River.
The east outer road will run between County Road 4016 and Route B at Rich Hill.
The prime contractor is Lehman Construction of California, MO, doing the work for a low bid amount of $5.4 million.
Completion is scheduled for early November 2012.

Much of the work will take place away from Route 71 traffic.

Accident in Cass County sends Adrian man to hospital
Thomas M. Gregg, 20, of Adrian was injured in an accident around 12:20 this afternoon on 71 highway just south of Belton near the New Cass Parkway interchange. According to the report, a 1999 Honda driven by Gregg struck another vehicle that was partially blocking the left southbound lane from another accident that had just occurred.
He was transferred to Truman Medical Center for treatment of moderate injuries. It is unknown the extent of injuries, if any, to the occupants of the other vehicles involved.

It seems that everyone has a cell phone nowadays and a new program implemented in cooperation with the Bates County Sheriff's Department is designed to get important, even lifesaving information to the public as soon as possible through text messaging.
The service provided by Nixle (www.nixle.com) is not only for emergencies- you can stay up to date with other information affecting our community such as traffic alerts, safety tips, local crime information and more.
Nixle currently works with over 4,600 public safety agencies across the United States and is well known for providing accurate, up to the minute information.
"This is a great way to get the word out" said Sheriff Chad Anderson today at the Adrian Business Expo. "There have been many times when we are working a situation and we need to notify those nearby. Likewise they may have information we need, but they aren't aware of what's going on. This will greatly help bridge the communication gap".

2nd annual Adrian Business Expo offers something for everyone
While visitor traffic may have been a little lighter than last year, lots of folks came to check out the many things to see and do at the 2nd annual Adrian Chamber of Commerce Business Expo. Nearly 60 vendors filled the Optimist Building with a wide variety of local goods and services ranging from home and agriculture products/services, food, jewelry, computer/internet services, insurance and much more.

Missouri’s students deserve an education that is equal to any across the nation. When a school district loses accreditation, it can have a major impact on those students’ futures. Since accreditation is tied to a district’s teaching processes, losing accreditation means that the district’s quality of teaching and student learning is in question. Among other things, unaccreditation can affect a student’s ability to get into college. No student that wants to continue on to higher education should have his or her future jeopardized.

Obituary - Jonathan Wakeland
Memorial visitation for Jonathan Wakeland will be 2-4 PM Saturday, March 3, 2012 at the Mullinax Funeral Home, Butler, (660) 679-0009. There will be no funeral services. Memorial contributions to a fund for Mr. Wakeland’s children. Cremation under the direction of the Mullinax Funeral Home, Butler.
Jonathan Andrew Wakeland, 38 of Butler, Missouri, died February 24, 2012 as the result of a vehicle accident. He was born January 6, 1974 in Corydon, Indiana, the son of John William and Martha Joan (Anderson) Wakeland. Jonathan was a roofer for Vaught Roofing in Grandview, Missouri. He enjoyed BMX biking, working concerts, and playing bass guitar. Most of all however, he loved his children.
Jonathan was preceded in death by his mother, and a brother, John Nelson. He is survived by his father, John William Wakeland of California; his children, Bella Telken of Kansas City, Kansas, and Ormetta Wakeland of Butler, Missouri; sister Michelle Coigny of Arizona; sister Karen Bevans of Overland Park, Kansas; brother Mark Bevans of Riverside, California; brother Douglas Bevans and wife Marilee of Elk Grove, California; half sister Nancy Pinkston and husband Don of Shelbyville, Illinois; half sister Brenda McClain and husband Ron of Findlay, Illinois; half brother Bill Wakeland, Jr.; as well as nieces and nephews.

Fundraisers set for Boys Youth Development Center in Rich Hill
The Boys Youth Development Center located at 501 East 14th Street in Rich Hill is a home for troubled teens, ages 11 through 17. The 24 bed facility provides a haven for boys from all over Southern Missouri for a 6 to 8 month period. The residents are home schooled and the organization is State funded.
The Center teaches young male adults the skills needed to re-shaping their lives, minds and improve relationships with family members, teachers and authority figures. The Center is State funded but it is in need of several amenities for the boys living at the center.
The Rich Hill Boys Youth Development Center will host a fund raising activity to generate funds for the expense of pizza parties, birthday presents and special dinners for the boys.
Tickets are now for sale to win a set of Firestone ,Vehicle tires. This 500 dollar value will be redeemable from any of the 36, Firestone dealership in the Kansas City area, to include Lees Summit and Raymore or the Joplin dealership.

Mound City man dies in overnight crash near Rich Hill
Jonathan A. Wakeland, 38, of Mound City Kansas succumbed to injuries in a single car accident just after midnight on 71 Highway north of Rich Hill. According to the report filed by Trooper B.R. Dodson, Wakeland was southbound at the Bates County Drainage Ditch when the 2005 Town and County van he was driving ran off the left side of the roadway, struck a guardrail, and ejected the driver.
Wakeland was pronounced deceased at 1:07 a.m. by Dr. Galvin at the Bates County Memorial Hospital. An investigation is pending.

New nutrition labels on meat and poultry make decisions easier

On March 1, a new rule of USDA’s Food Safety and Inspection Service takes effect. The rule requires nutrition labeling on major cuts of raw meat and poultry products.
Nutrition lables will be required on most of the cuts of raw meat at the grocery store. The nutrition facts label will list total calories, calories from fat, total grams of fat and grams of saturated fat. The labels will also provide information about protein, sodium, cholesterol and some vitamin and mineral information.

Butler men escape injury in Iowa trailer fire

| Two Butler men escaped injury this morning in a tractor trailer fire that happened in Cass County Iowa |
A mechanical malfunction of some sort was to blame for a semi trailer fire early this (Thursday) morning on Interstate 80, in Cass County. Firefighters from Atlantic and Marne were called to the scene located on I-80 westbound at the 52 mile-marker, at about 5:49-a.m. Atlantic Firefighter Gene Schmelling told KJAN News a tire burned out on the trailer of the semi which was hauling lime. The flames spread to the rest of the trailer, causing a substantial amount of damage to the rear. The semi’s driver managed to separate the tractor from the trailer, and prevent further damage. Firefighters were on the scene for about an hour. No injuries were reported. The DOT reported the right lane of I-80 westbound was blocked for a little more than four-hours this morning, while crews worked to remove the damaged trailer and clean-up the mess. Cass County Emergency Management Coordinator Mike Kennon says the wreck was finally cleared by around 11:45-a.m.
Firefighter Gene Schmelling said it’s not clear how the fire began, but it was most likely caused by a blow-out, bad brakes or worn bearings.

West Central Warriors first game March 24th
The first game of the season will be broadcast on FM-92 …. When the West Central Warriors Semi-Pro Football league hits the Rotary Football Field in Butler.
The team, made up of Bates and area county men will play against the Springriver Vikings at a home game.
The 35 man roster is for men ages 18 and up. No spot on the 8 man team is secured. You have to earn your spot. It is a 55 player team, with 35 members dressed out. Extra players dress to fill situations. Practices will be open to the public and free of charge. The West Central Warriors practice every Sunday afternoon at 3 pm on the Butler Rotary Field.

The team, made up of Bates and area county men will play against the Springriver Vikings at a home game.
The 35 man roster is for men ages 18 and up. No spot on the 8 man team is secured. You have to earn your spot. It is a 55 player team, with 35 members dressed out. Extra players dress to fill situations. Practices will be open to the public and free of charge. The West Central Warriors practice every Sunday afternoon at 3 pm on the Butler Rotary Field.

Bates County Democrat Women to meet
The Bates County Democratic Women's Club will meet 6:30 pm, Thursday, February 23, at the Butler Inn Restaurant. Anyone interested is welcome to attend. We will be making plans for an upcoming pitch tournament and for the upcoming election rallies.

The big pump pinch...
Speculation has it that nationwide prices will jump to around $4.25 a gallon by the end of April and closer to $5 by June. While we here in Missouri enjoy prices slightly lower than the national average, it's not much consolation.
What does this mean, specifically, to those of us in Bates County? If you're a commuter, a lot. There is a fair number who travel towards the Kansas City area each morning and there will need to be some changes in your budget to compensate- let's break down some numbers:
According to RITA, a web site run by the Bureau of Transportation Statistics, the average economy of passenger vehicles on the road is about 25 mpg. You might beg to differ if you drive a 1 ton V10 Dodge dually four wheel drive.
Using the 25 mpg number, lets say you travel 100 miles round trip per day (feel free to plug in your own numbers). At $3.25/gal this puts you around a total cost in gas per day at $13. At $4.25/gal it's $17. Come June, it could be as much as $20. For the Summer it could cost you an additional $140 a month just to do what you are doing today.
And speculation (whoever that is) says that diesel will go up and probably hang close to the price of gasoline as well. Expect all retail prices to go up to offset costs, too since most deliveries are possible thanks to gas and diesel.
If you're like most, and being optimistic, you say you can probably deal with the extra cost at the pump, but that's not all of it. Factor in your additional $140 a month just to get to work plus additional costs of going anywhere else, plus increased cost to buy things you need and it will add up to substantially more than you might realize. Your employer will probably feel the pinch, too. So don't expect enough of a raise to make up the difference.
What to do? All the logical things- cut back here, check tire inflation there, maybe even trade in that guzzler...
Hopefully prices will indeed come back down after Summer. Keep your fingers crossed.

The Annual Butler Lions Club Radio Auction all set for March 26th, 27th, 28th and 29th. The event is a fund raiser for the Butler Lions Club with the proceeds from your purchases staying within our community to be used for the needs of others.
Lions Club members take the microphone from Fm-92 to broadcast 2 hours each night. This year the auction will be held at Community First Bank in Butler. Those placing bids will call the bank, Lions Club members will answer your calls, take you bids for merchandise donated by area businesses.

Five compete in wrestling tournament at Mizzou Arena over the weekend

On Thursday through Saturday, February 16-18, the Butler Bears varsity wrestling team took five wrestlers to the Mizzou Arena to compete in the state wrestling tournament. The Bears came away with a 19th place team finish overall at the tournament. Butler also had two individual state medalists, Trey Heckadon (2nd/ 113) and Austin Fix (6th/ 138). Other wrestlers competing for Butler included Michael Coy (220), Cale Diehl (195), and Dalton Harris (145). A 6th wrestler, Daniel Shubert (126), injured in the district wrestling tournament, qualified for the state competition but was unable to compete.

“What a finish to a marathon of a season. The state tournament is an experience unlike any other. The pressure of wrestling in front of thousands of people, 8 mats running at the same time, each wrestler wrestling every match that could be his last ever…extraordinary. Our wrestlers wrestled tough in this great event. We had some great moments and some heartbreakers, as well as most other teams in the state. It is bittersweet that the state tournament is the tournament which dwarfs all other tournaments, the competition above all others. So many surprises can occur, wrestlers can win or lose a match in a split second, anything can happen. We were fortunate and proud to bring home 2 more individual state medals for Butler High School. Cale Diehl finished his outstanding senior season in the Friday night “bubble match,” only one match short of the medal rounds. Austin Fix, a 2-time state qualifier already, took the next step in his third and final state tournament with a respectable 6th place medal finish, becoming the 28th state medalist in our school’s wrestling history. Trey Heckadon, who had already medaled last year at state, wrestled a tremendous wrestler from Tolton Catholic in the state championship match. While we fell short of the gold medal, clearly the two best class 1 wrestlers in the state at 113 wrestled for the championship. Trey should have another opportunity to bring home the gold in the next two seasons. Butler has brought home 11 silver medals since 1996, our last season when Butler had an individual state champion. Our motto this year had been, “Nothing is enough, unless it is the best.” As we go forward, our best must become even better. We will use the lessons learned and the good examples set by our seniors to forge ahead to an ever stronger future for our program. I will deeply miss our seniors and many of the families who have supported us over the past 4 years. There is no sports family quite like that which we have in the wrestling community. I would like to give a final thanks to our local media, our fans, our wrestlers and managers, our families, and our community supporters for their hard work throughout this season. We can’t do what we do without all of you.”

Brief storm causes numerous power outages
While Bates County was under a Severe Thunderstorm Warning for less than 30 minutes, lightning and high winds were the cause of some 160 power outages in our area. Damages range from power lines that fell, blown transformer fuses, and a broken insulator that caused a minor fire on a pole.
Right now, crews are working quickly to restore power to everyone in the county. Another round of rain is headed our way over the next few hours, but is expected to be much quieter with little or no storms.

The National Weather Service has issued a Severe Thunderstorm Warning for Bates County and Surrounding areas until 8 p.m. this evening. Periods of heavy rain and winds of up to 60 mph are to be expected.
Fish Fry coming March 2nd to benefit Special Olympics
The Knights of Columbus Council #15026 in La Cygne is having a fish fry fundraiser for the Level 4 Students from Prairie View High School, as at least $2,500 is needed to send students to the Special Olympics in Hays KS in March.
The students will be helping with cooking, providing some desserts and helping serve as part of learning job skills to be productive citizens. Those who can, attend regular classes. The Knights and their Ladies will be doing the rest of the cooking.

Butler Students Speak Out at Oratorical Contest

Both students were awarded a cash prize for the honor. In addition, Koehn and VanHorn will be sent to the zone level where they will compete against winners from other Optimist Clubs in the area. The winner of the zone competition will be sent to the district level with the chance to win a scholarship.
Second place in the girls' division went to sophomore Gates Bartz. Eighth grader Sarah Smalley won third in the girls' division.
“All of the students did a wonderful job presenting their speeches about the questions posed to them,” Club President Marcia Rader said. “The members of our Optimist Club have no doubt that these students have a bright future ahead of them.”
