A Springtime Christmas
OK, because at least one of you has been naughty this past year we're not going to have a white Christmas. Thanks a bunch. Santa may have to wade through mud instead of snow. Will probably be done in record time with that 100 mph tail wind.
What a huge difference a week makes. Last Sunday anyone caught outdoors froze their rear ends off with wind chills 20 below zero. Fast forward to Christmas and we're now talking about early Springlike temps and maybe some strong storms. We've slowed the arrival time by a handful of hours and I suspect we'll be adjusting them some more tomorrow.

Our main concern is the threat of damaging winds. It's going to be windy even when there are no storms. I bet a few oblong shaped items will travel pretty far when kicked. Stay tuned.

MSHP: Welcome The New Year Safely!
The Missouri State Highway Patrol encourages everyone to make good decisions regarding their New Year’s celebration. A traffic crash would be an unfortunate way to begin 2017.
Last year over the New Year’s holiday counting period, there were 954 traffic crashes, which injured 364 people. There were seven fatalities during the 2016 New Year’s holiday counting period.
New Year's is a great opportunity to spend time with friends and family. Many Missourians will plan special gatherings to welcome 2017. If your plans include alcohol, remember that nothing ruins a party like a DWI arrest or a drinking-related traffic crash on your way home. Designate a sober driver before the party starts. The roadway is no place for a driver who has been drinking. If you cause a traffic crash, your New Year might begin with being arrested, facing legal fees and medical bills, and perhaps jail time! You could lose your license and will have to face your family and friends. If you kill or injure someone, you’ll pay the price for the rest of your life. No one wants to begin 2017 in jail. Be smart! Designate a sober driver or take a taxi.
As you drive to your New Year’s gathering, remember to buckle up and obey all traffic laws. Be a courteous driver: When in doubt, yield the right-of-way. Pay attention and use your turn signal to communicate your intentions to other drivers. The posted speed limit reflects the roadway's classification and is not a suggestion! There’s no reason to speed—the party starts after you arrive safely.
If inclement weather is expected, allow extra time for traveling or be flexible with your plans. The Road Condition Report number is 1-888-275-6636. Depending on the weather, staying home might be your best option. Remember: Missouri law states if you’re using your windshield wipers, your headlights must be turned on. It takes only a second to turn on your vehicle’s headlights. That second could make you more visible to other drivers and prevent a traffic crash.
The only 100 percent survivable traffic crash is the one that never happens. Make sure everyone in the vehicle is properly restrained in a seat belt or child restraint. Every day as we travel on Missouri's roadways, we trust that every driver on the road is going to obey the speed limit, pay attention, and drive sober. "Don't Violate The Trust."

Two very different extremes for this holiday weekend
A band of precipitation moving through the KC metro area will provide short lived sleet/snow/rain as it pushes to the NE. It will become predominately light rain on the backside of this band lasting through the early afternoon with temperatures rising into the mid 40s.
The threat of possible severe weather still exists for Christmas with damaging winds being the main threat as a line of showers and thunderstorms push through in the afternoon to evening time frame.

Stormy Christmas Weather
Here's a Christmas forecast you won't see around here too often. In fact we've never put a forecast like this out for Christmas Day before.
But the storm system coming into our area Sunday afternoon and evening is so strong we could actually be dealing with strong to severe storms in our part of the country.
December severe weather is rare around here and a lot will need to come together just right for these storms to happen.

So we don't recommend changing any plans, just keep an eye to the forecast and be sure you have a way to receive warnings, just in case.
Wintry Mix possible for some on Friday morning
![]() |
After combing through the latest model data, and consulting my magic 8 ball and lucky rabbits foot, think precipitation is a good bet on Friday. The million dollar question is in what form. And with temperatures a few degrees either side of freezing that is the challenge.
For now areas south of I-70, after maybe an hour of a wintry mix when it first starts, expect only rain and drizzle. Icing not expected. Further north where temperatures are below 32 am expecting a wintry mix. Can't rule out some slick spots for a few hours so better play it safe than sorry and allow extra time getting to your destination. By afternoon everyone should be above freezing and icing is not expected.
One more item.....we've received a couple of questions today asking about the threat of tornadoes on Christmas. While we do expect showers and a few thunderstorms, the risk for tornadoes looks fairly low at this time. We'll keep you posted.

While we were lucky enough to obtain video in this particular matter and have a suspect identified, it is not always the case and so as a friendly reminder here are 5 tips to help keep the rest of your holiday season safe.
Watch Out for Gift Thieves
Theft of packages from front porches and stoops increase as online shopping drives more home deliveries during the holidays. Take advantage of electronic delivery alerts and other protections to make sure your gifts are safely delivered — and received. Have packages held at the post office or sent to your office to ensure they are kept secure.
Beware of Parking Lot Pilfering
While you are in the mall purchasing gifts for your friends and family, thieves may be roaming through the parking lot looking to steal valuable items in unlocked cars. Shoppers should remember to always lock their doors, park in well-lit areas and hide valuables from plain view.
Protect Your Identity, Both Online and in Stores
Before you go shopping, think about how much information a thief would get his hands on if your wallet or purse was stolen. Avoid carrying Social Security cards, birth certificates or passports unless absolutely necessary. When shopping online, be sure to only use a secure website, log off from that site after you have completed your purchase, and monitor your bank accounts and credit card activity regularly throughout the holidays.
Travel Safely
The holiday season brings a number of unique driving risks. During this time of year, we have difficult weather conditions, limited daylight and drivers in unfamiliar areas. By planning extra travel time and eliminating distractions, you can help ensure safe travels during the holidays.
Prevent a Home Fire – Use Candles Wisely
Christmas Day, Christmas Eve and Dec. 23. are three of the top five days for home fires caused by candles. Never leave a burning candle unattended, and do not put any candles or open flames near Christmas trees or other holiday decorations that could quickly spark a fire in your home.
Wishing you and your family a safe and happy holiday season.

Two Very Different Holiday Weekend Concerns
The weather today looks quiet with highs in the low to mid 40s. However, this holiday weekend there will be a couple, possible weather threats. The first will come on Friday morning when there will be the chance for a light wintry mix in the form of freezing drizzle and/or light snow north of Interstate 70. This may lead to slick roads. However, by Friday afternoon, temperatures will warm above freezing with just drizzle or light rain possible.
On Christmas, a very strong storm system will move through the area. Storms may be capable of damaging winds across eastern Kansas and extreme western Missouri.
Lastly, tonight is the last of 7 consecutive midnight shifts for my co-worker and myself and we are the fortunate beneficiaries of getting the holiday weekend off (weather permitting). So, we would like to take this opportunity to wish everyone out there a Happy Holiday!
MSHP: Drive Safely This Christmas Season!
There's no place like home for the holidays. The Missouri State Highway Patrol reminds motorists to include safe, crash free travel as part of their holiday plans. Check your vehicle before you travel to ensure that it is in good working condition.
Make sure you are well rested before driving to your destination, no matter how short the distance. Keep an eye on the weather, too. Above all, please, please obey all traffic laws, be a courteous driver, and drive sober.
Last year, there were 1,070 traffic crashes during the Christmas counting period. In those crashes, five people were killed and another 363 were injured. During the 2015 Christmas holiday, one person was killed or injured every 12.7 minutes.
The 2016 Christmas holiday counting period begins at 6 p.m. on Friday, December 23, 2016, and ends at 11:59 p.m. Monday, December 26, 2016.
Remember: Holiday drivers will affect traffic patterns. Check the weather forecast and plan accordingly. The Road Condition Report number is 1-888-275-6636. Allow extra time to reach your destination, and obey all traffic laws.
If faced with a traffic emergency, motorists can contact the Missouri State Highway Patrol at 1-800-525-5555 or *55 on a cellular phone. This emergency number will ring into the nearest Highway Patrol headquarters. Motorists should use this number if they are in a traffic crash, witness a crash or crime, or observe a stranded motorist in need of assistance, or other traffic emergencies.
“On behalf of the Missouri State Highway Patrol, I want to wish everyone a very, merry Christmas, " said Colonel J. Bret Johnson, superintendent of the Missouri State Highway Patrol. "As you make your way from one gathering to the next, please drive safely. If you include alcohol in your celebrations, please don’t drive. A sober chauffer or other alternative transportation are always the best choices. Remember to buckle up, and let's all make safety an integral part of our holiday plans.”

Strong Christmas Day Storm System
The bigger story however will be a strong storm system that will impact the Central U.S. on Christmas Day. Models in very good agreement that this system will being light to moderate rains to the area Christmas afternoon and evening, with an isolated non-severe storm or two also possible.
For those who may be heading north, be mindful of the heavy snow potential from western Nebraska north through the Dakotas.
