Obituary - Wilma Lee Shupe
She married Charles “Chick” Shupe on December 16, 1950 in Lamar and he preceded her in death on August 9, 2011.
Wilma attended Lamar High School and graduated in 1950. After their marriage, she and Chick moved to Nevada in 1952. Wilma worked for Swift Fertilizer for many years before purchasing the business with the partnership of Elton Caldwell, which was formerly known as C & S Fertilizer. After retiring, she enjoyed gardening and raising cattle with Chick on their farm. Wilma was also a member of the Bronaugh Christian Church where she played piano for many years.
Wilma is survived by two sons, both of Nevada. Ken Shupe and his wife Alice and Doug Shupe and his wife Lynne; three granddaughters, Jill Smith and her husband, Brian, Nevada, Ashley Forkner and her husband, Nathan, Richards, MO, and Whitney Forkner, Nevada; five great-grandchildren, Bronson and Adison Smith, Mason and Rhett Forkner, and Jackson Montgomery. One brother-in-law, John Shupe of Oklahoma City, OK; and numerous nieces, nephews, and cousins. She was also preceded in death by her parents.
Funeral services will be held at 3:00 p.m. on Tuesday, September 5, 2017 at Ferry Funeral Home in Nevada with Kevin Moyers officiating. Interment will follow in Moore Cemetery, Nevada. The family will receive friends from 2-3:00 p.m. prior to the service at the funeral home.
Memorials are suggested to Bronaugh Christian Church or Vernon County Youth Fair in c/o Ferry Funeral Home.

This is surveillance footage of a suspect involved in a car break- in in the back parking lot of Central Bank of the Midwest on August 23rd. This subject may be known to frequent the Main St area in Belton.

Missouri High Schools Challenged to Drive Safe and Buckle Up!
The campaign is sponsored by the Missouri Coalition for Roadway Safety and ACT Missouri. Statewide registration is open now until Sept. 30. Competition will run from Oct. 1 to the end of the school year.
It’s important that teen drivers realize it only takes ONE text, ONE drink, ONE call, ONE reach, ONE distraction to cause ONE fatal moment - but ONE clicked safety belt could be the difference between life or death in a car crash.
“Nearly eight out of 10 young drivers and passengers killed in 2016 Missouri vehicle traffic crashes weren’t buckled up,” said Bill Whitfield, executive committee chair for the Missouri Coalition for Roadway Safety. “Through education, competition and fun, the ‘It Only Takes One’ campaign can make a difference with young Missourians and save lives.”
Traffic crashes are the leading cause of death for people 15-20 years old. Research indicates that driver distractions are the primary cause of fatal collisions. In addition, one of the greatest risk factors faced by teens is the number of passengers in the vehicle. Studies have confirmed that with the presence of just one passenger, teens are twice as likely to be involved in a fatal crash.
The program consists of two surprise safety belt checks at each high school to measure student safety belt usage, and also includes creative educational campaigns that promote safe driving throughout the school year. In addition, schools have the opportunity to submit a 30-second video spot aimed at encouraging their peers to buckle up and drive safe.
Grant funding prizes are awarded to schools with the most creative and impactful educational campaigns and public service announcements. The grant funding will be used to further educate the students on the importance of safety belt use and safe driving habits. Statewide recognition will be awarded with a banner to schools with the highest safety belt usage rates.

Clinton man injured in Henry County Crash
The Missouri State Highway Patrol says the accident occurred when the 2004 Chrysler driven by 22 year old Sam R. Ahnemann-Cover of Clinton, Missouri traveled off the right side of the roadway, over corrected and returned to the roadway before traveling off the roadway a second time and striking a fence.
Sam R. Ahnemann-Cover sustained moderate injuries in this accident and he was transported by ambulance to Golden Valley Memorial Hospital for treatment.
The vehicle received extensive damages and it was towed from the scene by Golden Valley Tow.

Many of the elderly were evacuated without these necessities and the other goods are for animals. The lap blankets are for all ages and some may be used for animals. They request chew bones since many dogs are chewing their feet.
The first responder who organized this relief has direct contact with Houston Red Cross and will be driving these items to Texas.These are the items Red Cross specifically requested.

Meeting to discuss the homelessness around Harrisonville
Tuesday night, Harrisonville officers met with members of Cass County clergy/church representatives. The purpose of the meeting was to discuss the problem of homelessness in and around Harrisonville.
After meeting at the Police Department, officers and clergy went around to identified areas of town where we believed homeless camps to be and attempted to make contact to gather information.
We will be doing the same thing again tonight in order to gather as much information on the scope of services needed in Harrisonville.

The girls golf traveled to Clinton on Wednesday to take on Green Ridge and St. Michaels. The course they played is the toughest they've seen this year, but that didn't get in the way of another win and 3 new school records!
Leading the way for the Bears was Katelyn McCrary with a new school record of 43 (+8). Tarin Schrock set a new personal record with a 49, followed by a 51 for Lanie Kauffman and Madison Tippie.
The Bears defeated the Green Ridge Tigers by a score of 194-250! St. Michaels did not have a full team to get a score. 194 (+54) is also a new school record! Our record is now 5-0!! 5 wins is the school record for most wins in a season, and we still have multiple opportunities to get more!
The Bears travel to Harrisonville on Tuesday, followed by our final home match on Thursday against Nevada and Pleasant Hill.

Lucille Rosson, 89, of Coal Valley, Illinois, died Tuesday, August 29, 2017, at home.
Services are 10:00 a.m. Tuesday at Trimble Funeral Home, Coal Valley, with Rev. Brian Bill officiating. Burial is in Rock Island National Cemetery. Visitation is 3:00 to 6:00 p.m. Monday at the funeral home. Memorials may be made to the family.
The former Cleo Lucille Gregg was born October 31, 1927, in Urich, Missouri, the daughter of Herman and Ethel (Barnard) Gregg. In her younger years, Lucille worked at the Cutty Hays Packing House in Kansas City. In 1949, she moved to Rock Island, where she married Albert Lee Rosson on April 29, 1950. She worked at Container Corporation until her daughters were born, at which time she was a loving, devoted stay-at-home mother.
Lucille was a member of the Rock Island Family Campers and Pepper Steppers Square Dance Club. She enjoyed crafts, playing games such as Dominoes, Aggravation, and Yahtzee!, traveling and camping, and sewing and making square dance dresses.
She is survived by two daughters and a son-in-law, Deborah Lynn Brower of Milan, Illinois, Juanita Alaine and Erol Hall of Rock Island; three grandchildren and their spouses, Kenneth II and Melissa Brower of Colona, and Kevin and Jackie Brower, and Jennifer and Ronald Jacobs, all of Moline; eight great-grandchildren; a great-great-daughter; siblings, Ruby and Aubrey Westmoreland of Butler, Missouri, Dale Gregg of Harrisonville, Missouri, and Wilma Fane of Canton, Wisconsin; and many nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her husband of 52-years, Albert Rosson, in 2002; a son-in-law, Kenneth L. Brower; and four brothers, Homer, Don, Cecil, and Clifton Gregg.

Two killed, Two seriously injured in vehicle versus pedestrian accident in Johnson County
The Missouri State Highway Patrol says the accident occurred when the 1986 Chevrolet driven by Curtis D. Sartin of Osceola, Missouri traveled off the right side of the roadway striking a ditch then striking a pedestrian that was walking before hitting a tree.
Mr. Sartin was pronounced dead at the scene of the crash and the pedestrian who was identified as 39 year old Cindy M. Stehmann of Warrensburg, Missouri was life flighted to Missouri Western Medical Center in Warrensburg, Missouri and she was pronounced dead at 1:04pm.
Two passengers in the vehicle 30 year old Tabitha N. May of Eldon, Missouri and 24 year old William J. Whitehurst of Eldon, Missouri both sustained serious injuries in this accident and the were transported to Research Medical Center in Kansas City, Missouri and Missouri Western Medical Center in Warrensburg.
The vehicle was totaled and towed from the scene by Tip Top Tow. This is Troop A of the Missouri State Highway Patrol's 52nd and 53rd Fatalities of 2017.

Flash Back: Battle of Osawatomie, Kansas, August 30, 1856
With continuing threats to Osawatomie most of the 200 residents had abandoned the area by August 1856. Several separate incidents increased tensions in the days before the battle. Free-state troops headed south from Osawatomie on the Fort Scott Road were met by proslavery troops on August 25, 1856. After a brief skirmish the proslavery forces fled. John Brown and his troops joined the free-state troops two days later near the Sugar Creek region in Linn County. Splitting into two smaller groups, the troops conducted raids on proslavery homesteads near Middle Creek.
By the August 29 the free-state raids were completed and troops returned to Osawatomie. They divided the numerous items they had acquired from the proslavery homesteads. The few brave remaining citizens were concerned that the raids would draw further attacks from proslavery forces. They were right to be concerned. Proslavery troops from Missouri were assembling and planning a counter strike.
In Lawrence General James Lane was assembling a free-state militia to defend freestaters. He called Frederick Brown and four others to Lawrence to notify them of his plan. Brown had decided not to go to accompany them to this meeting.
Proslavery General John Reid believed that the elder Brown was in Lawrence. However, he had reliable information placing Brown in Osawatomie. At a council of war Reid and his men discussed which community to attack. Captain Hiram Bledsoe said it was the duty of the troops to destroy Brown and burn the town of Osawatomie. Reid approved the mission and prepared his troop of 400 men for the attack.
On the evening of August 29 John Yelton, the mail carrier, warned Osawatomie citizens they must “fight or flee.” The next morning at daybreak the Reverend Martin White, a proslavery Baptist minister acting as a guide for General Reid, led the Reid’s troops into town. White shot and killed Frederick Brown who was leading an advance party of free-state men near Osawatomie. The town sounded the alarm to summon help.
When Brown heard about the death of his son he quickly rallied his troop of 40 men. He found a stone corral where his men found a vantage point to fire their Sharps rifles at the enemy. The stone corral helped to protect them from the cannon fire. One of the balls from the cannon fire raked across Brown's back as he was crossing back and forth in the corral.
Reid moved his troops forward in rows toward the wooded area where Brown and his men were hidden.The proslavery men literally ran toward Brown's men to avoid being hit by the rifle shots. Reid’s cannons but failed to cross the distance toward their target; the abolitionists responded with gunfire. The battle ended when Brown's men ran out of ammunition. He ordered them to flee in different directions to draw the proslavery troops away from Osawatomie.
Failing to catch Brown’s men, the proslavery military plundered and burned nearly all of the buildings in Osawatomie. They spared a few women and children, and captured six prisoners. Reid’s forces continued to the north, attacking other towns along the way toward Topeka.
In addition to the death of Brown's son, four freestaters died—David Garrison, George Partridge, Theron Parker Powers, and Charles Kaiser. Reid’s troops also took several free-state men as prisoners. In all six free-state and two proslavery men died in the battle.
“God sees it,” Brown reportedly said after the battle. “I have only a short time to live—only one death to die, and I will die fighting for his cause. There will be no more peace in this land until slavery is done for. I will give them something else to do than extend slave territory. I will carry this war into Africa.” Brown began to turn his fight to the South, planning for a raid on the federal arsenal at Harpers Ferry, Virginia (now West Virginia.)

Man charged with attempted robbery, assault in Belton
The male suspect, identified as Trevon M. Johnson in court documents, was located and taken into custody after a short foot pursuit.
Mr. Johnson was charged with first-degree attempted robbery, first-degree assault and resisting with an arrest.

KBI Drug Arrests
This week the KBI along with the Wallace County Sheriff’s Office, and the Greeley County Sheriff’s Office announced over 40 arrests were made following a two month investigation into narcotics distribution focused on several northwest Kansas counties, and along the Colorado border.
The arrests were made for suspected crimes including distribution of methamphetamine, distribution of marijuana, possession of methamphetamine, possession of marijuana, multiple weapons violations and several other drug related crimes.
The KBI’s mission in proactive narcotics operations like these is to partner with all affected law enforcement agencies in an effort to reduce the availability and distribution of drugs in Kansas.
We are thankful to the many law enforcement agencies that assisted with these arrests.

The lady bears had a big victory over Barstow last night! (It was our last time playing them as part of our Conference! And all the coaches said amen.) The girls came out slow and lost the first game. We got it turned around quick in game 2 with some BIG blocks early.
Barstow has a junior who has already committed to Arkansas so shutting her down early in that second game was huge. We began to trust our abilities and got some good kills, digs, and blocks from that point on.
We play best 3/5 in conference games. We won 3-1. Final scores 18-25, 25-16, 25-20, and 25-19.

I didn't give an update on our tournament from Saturday so long story short... the adversity bug bit us (injury, illness, SATs). BUT, the girls did a really really good job playing in unfamiliar places. We still got first in our pool but lost to KC Lutheran in the semi-final game.
We play Van Horn, our second conference game, tomorrow night at home. JV starts at 5. Varsity will follow. Everyone's support is so appreciated!!

Butler man faces felony and misdemeanor charges in Vernon County
On Monday 8/28/17 the Vernon County Sheriff's Office arrested 32 year old David W. McKinney Jr. of Butler, Missouri.Mr. McKinney was arrested for failure to appear in court on the original charges of 1.) Class D Felony Possession of a controlled substance 2.) Misdemeanor unlawful use of drug paraphernalia.
He was booked into the Vernon County Jail in Nevada, Missouri and his bond is currently set at $8,300.00 cash or surety.
