From the Barton County Sheriff's Office

On 11-30-2017 a subject came to the Sheriff's Office and made a complaint of trash being dumped out front of his home on SE 50th Lane in rural Barton County.

A report was taken in the case and the investigation has begun in the littering case.

Inside the trash bags was mail with a subjects name on it and also a traffic ticket from Cass County Missouri.

It's believed that the suspect in the case drove a vehicle by the victims home and threw the trash out of the vehicle. At this time the investigation continues.

From the Johnson County Missouri Sheriff's Department

On 11-30-17 members of the Johnson County Sheriff's Office recovered two rifles and two shotguns that were submerged under water from the Holden City Lake.

The rifles and one shotgun had been stolen from a residence north of Holden. The second shotgun was unrelated to the burglary investigation.

Detectives have arrested three adults involved in the gun theft and completed one juvenile referral. Detectives were able to close two burglary reports during this investigation.

I'm thrilled to announce that legislation I introduced in May to allow off-duty and retired police officers to use a firearm to protect children at school has been included in legislation passed out of the House Judiciary Committee yesterday.

The legislation is endorsed by the National Fraternal Order of Police, Laclede County Sheriffs Office's Sheriff David Millsap and Pulaski County Sheriff's Department's Sheriff Jimmy Bench.

Law enforcement’s ability to respond to emergencies in rural areas has always been a challenge, and this vulnerability has become more evident in the wake of recent shootings across America.

My bill would enhance local law enforcement’s reach by giving school boards the option to allow off-duty and retired officers to carry their firearms in schools. This proposal is a commonsense measure to protect our children and help law enforcement who are already stretched too thin. I’m glad to see it included in the legislative package the Judiciary Committee passed yesterday.

From the Bates County Prosecuting Attorney's Office

It's life in prison for Andrew Shores Senior. Shores had previously pleaded guilty to 3 counts of child molestation in March of 2015 and was placed on 7 years probation on each count. In the fall of 2015 additional allegations were made against Shores that led to the new charges being filed.

Mr. Shores was found guilty in August 2017 on multiple counts of child molestation, rape and sodomy and today Judge James Journey followed the recommendation of Prosecuting Attorney Hugh C. Jenkins and sentenced Shores to life in prison for his crimes. Judge Journey decreed that Shores will have to serve 20 years before he will even be eligible for parole.

Before Judge Journey handed down the sentence, a family member read emotional victim impact statements from Shores victims and family members.

After the sentencing, Sheriff Chad Anderson and deputies led Shores from the courtroom. Within the next few days Shores will be transported to the Missouri Department of Corrections to begin serving his life sentence.

On November 30th 2017 the Barton County Sheriff's Office received a call of a found item in an individual's yard in the Northeast part of Barton County. The item was a small kind of motorcycle or moped.

Deputies at the Sheriff's Office have been trying to locate an owner for the moped however at this time we have been unsuccessful.

Update: Butler woman injured in Bates County Crash on I-49

On 11/30/17 around 7:00am the Missouri State Highway Patrol in Bates County along with the Adrian Fire Department, Butler Fire Department and Bates County EMS all responded to a one vehicle accident in the Southbound Lanes of I-49 at mile marker 137 which is just north of Passaic.

The Missouri State Highway Patrol says the accident occurred when the 2001 Pontiac Grand Am driven by 20 year old Rylee R. Brumfield of Butler, Missouri traveled off the right side of the roadway and struck a ditch.

Rylee R. Brumfield sustained minor injuries and was transported by ambulance to Bates County Memorial Hospital for treatment.

The vehicle received moderate damages in this accident and was towed from the scene by Douty's Tow of Butler, Missouri.

Upon arrival it was determined there were no injuries, the building sustained substantial damage.

Missouri Travelers Receive Good News with REAL ID Extension

JEFFERSON CITY, MO – Missourians with travel plans in 2018 have received good news. The Department of Homeland Security has granted Missouri an extension to implement REAL-ID compliant driver licenses.

The extension means Missourians will be able to use their current forms of identification to fly domestically and enter federal facilities until Oct. 10 of next year.

During the 2017 legislative session, the Missouri General Assembly approved legislation to allow residents to obtain a photo ID that is compliant with the federal REAL ID Act. Because the current version of the Missouri driver’s license is not compliant, DHS announced in January of 2016 that Missourians would not be able to enter federal facilities and would not be able to fly domestically beginning in 2018. The federal government granted an extension to allow Missourians to continue to use their existing IDs for these purposes until January 22, and now the new extension gives Missourians additional months to utilize their existing licenses.

The state will continue to work toward the implementation of the new REAL ID-compliant licenses, and is on track to have them in place by March 2019. The state will have to apply for a second waiver next year in order to cover the gap between October, when the current waiver expires, and March, when the new IDs will be in circulation.

Missouri Receives Good News with Latest Employment Statistics: Missourians can be thankful for continued job growth in the Show-Me State. The Missouri Department of Economic Development recently released numbers for the state’s unemployment rate in October and it was good news for the state. Missouri’s unemployment rate fell to 3.5 percent in October, which is the lowest seasonally adjusted unemployment rate the state has seen since July 2000. In total for the year, Missouri has seen non-farm payroll employment increase by 30,700 jobs.

On 11/29/17 around 3:06pm the Bates County Sheriff's Office arrested 24 year old Trent A. Lewis of Rockville, Missouri.

Mr. Lewis was arrested for 1.) 3rd Degree Domestic Assault - 2nd offense.

He was booked into the Bates County Jail in Butler and he is currently listed as bondable.

Obituary - Norma Jean Handke

Norma Jean Handke, 79, of Amoret, Missouri departed this life on Tuesday, November 28, 2017 surrounded by love and family at her home.

She is survived by her husband, Ernest Handke of the home; three daughters, Margaret Brown and husband Cleatis, Adrian, Missouri, Twylia Siegle and husband Jeff, New Meadows, Idaho, Stacy Dohle and husband Dean, Pleasant Hope, Missouri; 5 grandchildren; two sisters, Dorothy Craig, El Dorado Springs, Missouri and Donna Gibson, Creighton, Missouri; other relatives and many friends.

Funeral services will be 11:00 a.m., Saturday, December 2, 2017 at the Dickey Funeral Home, Garden City, Missouri with burial in the Dayton Cemetery near Garden City.

Family will receive friends from 10:00 a.m. until 11:00 a.m., Saturday, December 2, 2017 at the funeral home.

Shirley Lee Deal was born December 18, 1922 in Kenny Heights, Kansas to Clarence and Mary Jane Faulk Myers. She was united in marriage to Ralph Deal on April 19, 1940. They made their home on a farm outside of Drexel, Missouri. Shirley worked alongside her husband on the dairy farm for over 40 years, milking at least 75 cows twice a day. She was never one to set idle and earned the nickname of “Shirley Go”. Shirley was an active member of the Drexel United Methodist Church for many years, she served several terms as the President of the Drexel Senior Citizens Organization, and was the Senior Representative to the Cass County Board.

Shirley was preceded in death by her parents, husband Ralph Deal, daughter Cecilia Grace Lee, seven sisters, and two brothers. She is survived by a son Aubrey Deal and wife Linda of Drexel, Missouri, son Gary Deal and wife Jennifer of Glascow, KY., son Michael Deal and wife Sherry of Raymore, MO., daughter Mary Margaret Day and husband LeRoy of Hermitage, MO., 14 grandchildren, numerous great-grandchildren, and one great-great-grandchild.

Nevada Police Department warn the public to lock your vehicle

On November 23, 2017, officers responded to 216 West Olive Street concerning a reported structure fire. The El Dorado Springs Volunteer Fire Department arrived on the scene and conducted fire suppression operations which in turn saved the structure.

The investigation revealed multiple points of origin of fire along the outside of the structure.

Officers located evidence of combustible liquids within and near the areas of fire origin. There were no reported injuries. A report taken and the investigation continues.

Frank Fink, 88 of Drexel, Missouri passed away November 27, 2017, surrounded by his loving family, in his home in Drexel.

Frank Fink, a farmer and a lifelong resident of Drexel was born September 9, 1929 in rural Bates County, near Merwin, Missouri to Bert E. and Cecil Stitt Fink. Frank grew up in Bates County and attended school at Woodland, a rural one-room school. Following school, he proudly served his country in the United States Army during the Korean Conflict from 1951 to 1953.

Frank was united in marriage to Shirley Dunnington on July 29, 1954. The ceremony took place on the Dunnington Century Farmstead. Frank and Shirley would make that farm their home. They would work hard and raise their four children, who were a very important part of Frank’s life.

After retirement Frank was an active member of the Drexel Coldwater Masonic Lodge until it’s closing. After which, he would take part in neighboring lodges in Freeman and Amsterdam, MO. He would never miss his daily visits at the local coffee shops and restaurants, he loved to attend activities that his grandchildren and great-grandchildren were involved in, and most of all he loved to tell a good story about local history or just the “good old days”. Frank will be missed by his family and many, friends.

Frank was preceded in death by his parents, sister Edna Van Vlack, and by an infant daughter Brenda Kay. He is survived his wife of 63 years, Shirley Fink of the home in Drexel, daughter Jo Ann and husband Steve Mills of Drexel, MO., son Bill Fink of Warsaw, MO., son Raymond Fink and wife Sheryl, and son Roger Fink and wife Rose, both of Drexel,

MO. 11 grandchildren, and 18 great-grandchildren. Frank is also survived by his brother Ernest Fink and wife Anna Marie, nephew Lee Glaze and wife Ellen, niece Delia Russel and Husband Gary, nephew Joe Fink and wife Dixie, and niece Lori Cook and husband Brian all of Drexel, MO., and by nieces Joyce Glaze and Janell Lewis of Florida, along with many extended family members and dear friends.

Schell City man arrested for failure to register

Members of the Sheriff’s Office took a wanted fugitive into custody Wednesday afternoon after several days of searching.

Sheriff’s Officials said they had been on the search for Richard L Covey, 57 of Schell City Mo since Monday when a warrant was issued for Covey charging him with failure to register as a sex offender.

According to Vernon County Sheriff Jason Mosher, Covey was a suspect from an incident that occurred over the weekend. Mosher said investigators were able to get a location on Covey early Wednesday. Multiple units then surrounded the area (near C Hwy and Chouteau Road) and located Covey within a short amount of time.

The Sheriff said a firearm was also located during the arrest. “Mr. Covey was in possession of a firearm when we found him, so I am grateful we were able to take Covey into custody without anyone getting hurt” said Mosher.

Mosher said Covey is being held in the Vernon County Jail on the no-bond warrant and that additional charges may be filed when his office completes the investigation.

Semi truck accident in Barton County

On November 29th 2017 The Barton County Sheriff's Office received a 911 call of a one vehicle accident on interstate I-49.

The reporting party on the accident advised a semi truck had left the roadway and struck a tree.

Deputies from the Barton County Sheriff's Office, the Barton County ambulance, the Lamar Fire Department and Missouri State Highway Patrol responded to the accident scene.

One person was transported to the hospital for medical treatment. The Missouri State Highway Patrol is investigating the crash.

Arrest made after shooting in Joplin

On 11/28/2017 at 10:19pm officers responded to the area of 202 South McKinley for reports of gunshots. A caller reported hearing two shots and yelling from the residence. Officers contacted multiple people at the residence and cleared the house. They didn’t find anybody injured or any signs of a shooting.

Nobody at the residence confirmed a shooting occurred either. While there, officers did locate a stolen vehicle parked in the driveway. The stolen Nissan Pickup was reported stolen to Jasper County the day previous and was recovered by our officers.

Shortly thereafter, officers who were still investigating received information that a male had been shot in the face at the location and taken away before the officers arrived. Officers and detectives began and extensive investigation to determine the location of the victim. The victim was located in Joplin later in the night and had been shot in the face. It was determined he was in fact shot at that residence. He was described as having non-life-threatening injuries, with a bullet striking him in one side of the face and exiting the other side.

At approximately 7am this morning, officers and detectives located and arrested Joseph D Pryor, 25, from Joplin at the Sunrise Inn on South Range Line. Pryor is currently being held in the Joplin City Jail. Charges are being submitted to the Jasper County Prosecutor for 1st Degree Robbery, 1st Degree Assault, armed criminal action and felon in possession of a firearm. Charges are also being submitted to the Newton County Prosecutor, related to the arrest location, for possession of a controlled substance and felon in possession of a firearm.

This case is still under investigation.

He was preceded in death by his parents; a brother, Dean Borman; and two grandsons, Ray and Kevin.

During the early morning hours of 11/29/88 the Kansas City Missouri Fire Department lost 6 Heroes as the result of an arson fire located at a construction site at 87th & Hickman Mills Drive.

Lost that horrible day were Fire Captains Gerald Halloran and James Kilventon Jr... Firefighters Thomas Fry, Luther Hurd, Robert McKarnin & Michael Oldham.

Take a moment and say a Prayer for the lost Heroes and their families along with the Kansas City Missouri Fire Department! These Heroes must never be Forgotten Rest in Peace Brothers
