Aimee Fitzpatrick found guilty in Bates County Court

Late yesterday afternoon Judge David Darnold returned a guilty verdict on all 3 counts in the States case against Aimee Fitzpatrick. Fitzpatrick had been charged with 2 counts of First Degree Statutory Sodomy, class A Felonies and a companion charge of Felony Child Endangerment. Fitzpatrick had waived jury trial and Judge Darnold presided over yesterday’s proceedings.

Richard Purkey, Aimee Fitzpatrick’s stepfather was convicted in 1998 of sexually abusing Aimee Fitzpatrick. Purkey went to prison for those crimes and was a registered sex offender. Purkey, 70 pleaded guilty in April and was sentenced to 27 years in the Missouri Department of Corrections for abusing the 12-year-old daughter of Aimee Fitzpatrick.

Aimee Fitzpatrick was initially charged in 2014 after the disclosure by Aimee’s daughter that Richard Purkey had abused her. After the disclosure to Aimee Fitzpatrick, the mother still allowed Purkey access to the daughter and in doing so failed to protect the young girl.

Emotional testimony was heard by Judge Darnold from the 12-year-old Victim, Aimee Fitzpatrick and Karen Purkey, wife of Richard Purkey.

After Judge Darnold read the verdict, he ordered Fitzpatrick to be taken into custody and held at the Bates County Jail until sentenceing.

Dangerous Heat Through Saturday

Heat will be dangerous today through Saturday with heat index values ranging between 102-110. Today and tomorrow will be the hottest days of the week as air temperatures will range from the mid 90s to around 100. Kansas City has not had a 100 degree day in 1753 days (almost 5 years!) making it the second longest stretch on the 130-year record.

The forecast high for Kansas City today is 99 degrees so the streak could be broken today. If you need to be outdoors today (and the next couple of days), try and limit the time outdoors, wear light colored and light weight clothing, take frequent breaks preferably in the shade, and drink plenty of water. also, check on the elderly and those with respiratory issues as they will be most sensitive.

If you do not have access to air conditioning find a cooling center...locations and hours can be found by calling the United Way at 2-1-1. Also, bring those pets in as this extreme heat will affect the fur babies as well. Stay safe everyone!
