Not so long ago it was common for student vehicles in the parking lot to have guns and knives in plain sight... and no one ever thought about using them to harm anyone.
Things are different now, and regardless of what side of the gun debate you're on, it's imperative that innocent students and teachers be protected from those with ill will. And, by the sign shown here, it appears that Miami R-1 schools are prepared to defend by what ever means are necessary to do just that.
Miami, like others, has taken multiple precautions to insure the livelihood of those who attend this rural Bates County school.
Armed staff at Miami have been in place for four years- smaller signs on doors have made this statement since the beginning. The larger outdoor sign was added recently, along with an amendment to the school handbook. Faculty who are armed have been certified and trained; however, they remain anonymous within the confines of the school.
Another safety mechanism in place are 'safe shelters', shown here. The shelters collapse for storage and can be easily opened for quick access in the event of tornado or an active shooter.
Per our conversation with officials at Miami R-1 this morning, anyone with questions, or would like to learn more can contact the school at any time.
"If someone has a gun and is trying to kill you, it would be reasonable to shoot back with your own gun." - Dalai Lama
Unfortunately, we live in times where this seems to be a reasonable statement.
