Obituary - Helen Mae Benthusen

Helen Mae Benthusen, age 101, La Cygne, Kansas passed away on Tuesday June 30, 2020.

Graveside funeral service will be held 10 am Friday, July 3, 2020 at Mt Moriah Cemetery, Kansas City, Missouri. 

Helen will lie in state from 11 am to 5 pm Thursday, July 2 at the Schneider Funeral Home and Crematory, La Cygne Chapel. 

Contributions are suggested to the New Lancaster United Methodist Church or Olathe Hospice.

Updated Obituary - Peggy Campbell

Alice Marie (Peggy) Campbell (83) of Garden City, Missouri, went to be with her lord and savior on Saturday, June 27, 2020. Peggy was born in Pickering Missouri on August 7, 1936 to Clayton and Lela Peters. She was united in Holy Matrimony to Walter Ray Campbell on September 19, 1954, in Topeka, Kansas. Peggy loved her family and friends and enjoyed cooking and loved bird watching. Peggy was a member of the American Legion Post #498 of Garden City, Missouri.

Peggy was preceded in death by her parents, Clayton and Lela Peters, her brother Frank Peters and her sister Lula Carnes.

Peggy is survived by her husband Walter Ray Campbell of the home, her brother Fred Peters(Carol) of Maryville, Missouri and her daughter Rhonda Rae Cella (Joe) of Adrian, Missouri. Peggy is also survived by 3 grandchildren, and 6 great-grandchildren. She will be missed by her family and friends.

Graveside services will be July 4, 2020 at the Dayton Cemetery at 10 a.m.

Due to the COVID 19 outbreak, a celebration of life will be at a later date.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be sent to the Cancer Society or the Alzheimer’s Research Fund.

Barbara Francis (Lambrecht) Hutson, 81, of Lee's Summit, Missouri passed away on Monday, June 29, 2020 at her home. 

A private family service will be held on Friday, July 3, 2020. Interment will follow at Mt. Olivet Cemetery in Kansas City, Missouri.

Louisburg Kansas Aquatic Center will reopen

The Louisburg Aquatic Center will reopen Wednesday, July 1, after the Miami County Health Department has finished its case and contact investigation stemming from a lifeguard testing positive for COVID-19 June 27.

The health department’s disease investigator Christena Beer informed City staff that seven pool employees will need to remain in self-quarantine into July due to working proximity to the confirmed case. All other employees have been released.

Pool staff will deep clean the pool Tuesday with the facility reopening Wednesday. Regular pool hours are noon-8 p.m. Monday-Friday with lap swim from 8-9 p.m. and noon to 7:30 p.m. Saturday and Sunday.

Beer said anyone who might have come in contact with the lifeguard who has tested positive for COVID-19 has been contacted by the Miami County Health Department, including any possible pool patrons.

Refunds for pool passes will not be issued, City staff said.

The pool will close at 5 p.m. Saturday, July 4 for the Independence Day holiday.

Ira Clinton Barnard, 75, Adrian, MO, passed away Monday, June 29, 2020 at St. Joseph Medical Center in Kansas City, MO. 

Funeral services will be held at 10:00 a.m. Friday, July 3, 2020 at the Atkinson Funeral Home in Harrisonville, MO. 

Visitation will be held from 6:00-8:00 p.m. Thursday, July 2 at the Atkinson Funeral Home. Burial will be in Wills Cemetery in Peculiar, MO.

Osage Valley Electric Cooperative reports power outages

Our power provider, KAMO, is working on an issue in the Mt. Zion Substation. This outage is affecting members in the Deepwater, Lowry City and Brownington areas. 

Osage Valley Electric Crews are also working on an outage in the Hudson/Pleasant Ridge area in eastern Bates County. 

Crews are working to make repairs and will have power restored as quickly as possible.

Butler woman arrested on Forgery Warrant

Krista M. Myers (Itzen)
On 6/29/20 around 5:17pm the Butler Police Department arrested 30 year old Krista M. Myers (Itzen) of Butler.

She was arrested for 1.) Felony Warrant for failure to appear Original Charge - Forgery.

Krista M. Myers (Itzen) was booked into the Bates County Jail in Butler and she is currently being held on a $175 cash only bond.

Obituary - Lisa McCubbin

Lisa McCubbin, 55 of Drexel, Missouri passed away Monday, June 29, 2020 at her home in Drexel. A visitation will be held Thursday, July 2, 2020 from 11:00 am to 1:00 pm at the Mullinax Funeral Home, Drexel Chapel (660-679-0009).

Lisa Suzanne McCubbin was born November 29, 1964 in Harrisonville, Missouri to David and Phyllis Spencer Gilbert. She grew up in the Drexel and Westline area. Lisa graduated from Midway High School in 1984. She was united in marriage to Dwight McCubbin in 1985. To this union three children were born. Lisa worked most of her life as a babysitter and homemaker raising her family. Family was important to Lisa, they always came first in her life and she cherished the time she got to spend with them, especially the grandchildren.

Lisa was preceded in death by her father, grandparents, her aunt Ann Spencer, and by her mother-in-law Lila McCubbin, and two brother-in-laws. She is survived by her husband Dwight McCubbin, son Jonathan McCubbin and Fiance Amanda, daughter Shelbi Evans and Husband Cody, son Jushua McCubbin, three grandsons, Jonathan Jr., Aydyn, and Bentley. She also leaves behind her mother Phyllis Gilbert, brothers, Tommy Gilbert and wife Carey, Davey Gilbert, and Darrell Gilbert and wife Sheryl, along with many extend family members and dear friends.

Donna Mae “Peggy” McAnany was born July 6, 1931 in Drexel, Missouri to Morris and Anna Stewart Hewitt. She grew up in the Drexel area and graduated from Drexel High School. Peggy was united in marriage to Lloyd McAnany in 1954. Peggy worked for many years as a school bus driver in Louisburg.

Peggy was preceded in death by her parents, husband Lloyd McAnany and a son Larry McAnany. She is survived by a son Randy McAnany and wife Pam of Drexel, MO., daughter Judy Mower and husband George of Olathe, KS., four grandchildren, and seven great-grandchildren with one on the way.

Kathy Jo Osborn was born February 3, 1950 in Harrisonville, Missouri to Harold and Pauline McAnany Nafus. She grew up in the Drexel area and has been a life long resident. Kathy was united in marriage to Melvin Osborn on April 27, 1968. To this union two children were born.

Kathy was preceded in death by her parents. She is survived by her husband of 52 years, Melvin Osborn, son Dennis Osborn and wife Sarah, daughter Jennifer Osborn, grandchildren Sophie, Jackson, and Mackenna, along with many extended family members and friends.

The members of the Nevada Elks lodge 564 is picking sweet corn for sale! The money raised will go to the veterans home in Mt. Vernon Missouri ! Big shout out to Jason Bond for planting the corn!

Confirmed COVID-19 cases

Vernon County Health Department has confirmed another positive case of novel coronavirus (COVID-19) bringing our total confirmed cases to 18. This case is symptomatic and is currently hospitalized. The family of this case is quarantined at home per CDC guidelines.

Vernon County Health Dept staff is continuing contact tracing and are notifying anyone who has been listed as a close contact to the positive case. Those contacts will be quarantined at home.

There is potential community exposure related to this case. The exposure is low risk for transmission. The exposure is as follows:

6/27/2020:
MFA on Hickory St from approximately 9:30-9:45 am
Wal-Mart from approximately 10:00-10:20 am.

If you feel like you may have been exposed please monitor for signs or symptoms for 14 days. If you develop any symptoms contact your primary care provider or urgent care for further evaluation and testing. Symptoms include:
• Cough
• Fever
• Shortness of breath
• Chills
• Muscle aches
• Sore throat
• New loss of taste or smell

Individuals should continue to practice social distancing, clean/disinfect any high touched surfaces, wash their hands with soap and water routinely, use hand sanitizer if soap and water is not available and avoid touching your face (especially eyes, nose & mouth). It is up to each and every one of us to stop the spread of this disease.

CALL before going to a clinic, urgent care, or ER if you feel you need to be evaluated

Nevada man arrested on felony warrant in Jasper County

On 6/28/20 around 3:50pm the Missouri State Highway Patrol in Jasper County arrested 34 year old Douglas D. Derry of Nevada, Missouri.

Mr. Derry was arrested for 1.) Felony Probation and Parole Warrant - Probation Violation.

He was booked into the Jasper County Jail in Carthage, Missouri and he is currently listed as bondable.

Road back open in rural Butler

If you've traveled in the area of Rice Road south of Butler you have noticed that CR NW 1001 has been closed some time due to a bridge repair! 

Well today we are happy to announce that bridge work is over and a new better bridge is in place. 

This will for sure save some time for the locals as going around this repair has been a bit time consuming!

Kansas Governor Laura Kelly is making it mandatory to wear a face covering in the state of Kansas starting July 3rd.

Governor Kelly said in her weekly press conference today that starting July 3rd at 12:01 a.m. everyone in the state of Kansas must wear a face covering in order to slow the spread of COVID-19.
