A celebration of Emmagene’s life will be held with a visitation from 2:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m. on Thursday, November 4, 2021, at Cullen Funeral Home, 612 W. Foxwood Dr., Raymore, Missouri 64083. Burial will be held following visitation at Wills Cemetery in Peculiar, Missouri.

Emmagene was born in Sedalia, Missouri, on December 23, 1941, to Robert Steven Parker and Mary Ellen (Cochran) Parker, being the sixth of eight siblings. She started working at the young age of 14 as a carhop and dreamed of one day being a math teacher. She married her first love Joseph W. Miller (Jay) in 1958 and had her two girls and a son. Emmagene worked most of her life doing factory work, taking her from Kansas City to live in Fort Wayne, Indiana, and Janesville, Wisconsin. She retired in 2003 after 21 years on the General Motors assembly line. She had a huge heart and sacrificed her dreams to be a Mother, wanting to provide a better life than she had as a child for her children by sometimes working 16 hours a day. After retirement, she returned to the Kansas City area to be close to her family, setting roots in Peculiar, Missouri.

Emmagene became known as Memaw in 1976 to her first grandchild, which was carried on by all her grandchildren and many others over the years. Some of her favorite memories were the summers with her grandchildren at the farm, vacations to Kansas City visiting, any and every family gathering or event. Family was her life.

In the winter of 1986, Emmagene (Sweet Pea) was joined in marriage with the second love of her life Virgil Medlin (Knot Head). Together they joined their families as one and shared twenty-seven years together before his passing in 2013.

Emmagene put her heart and soul as a committee member of the UAW 95 and her work with the Veterans Committee with her husband Virgil. She had a huge, sweet tooth, loved her animals, enjoyed crafting, soaps, and watching the Kansas City Chiefs. She also had quite the Beanie Baby collection. Her hugs, kisses, stubbornness, random phone calls all hours of the day for Diet Pepsi and onion rings among many other things that made her our Mom and Memaw will forever be missed.

Emmagene was preceded in death by her son Donald Joe Miller; husband Virgil Medlin; Grandson Bobby Boyle; great-granddaughter Lilly Passler; great-grandson Skylar Billy; stepson Jeffrey Medlin; brother Gordon T. Parker; sister Betty Jean Craig; and brother Richard E. Parker.

Parker (Beverly), and Larry H. Parker (Brenda); sister Marie E. McGinnis; four grandchildren, Corrie Posey (Robert), Ty Docman, Michael Passler, and Michael Billy, Jr (Tiffany); and eleven great-grandchildren, Bobbi, Colt, Emma, Amber, Fallyn, Harlee, Ryland, Levi, Chase, Morgan, Asher and many nieces, nephews and friends.

Obituary - Thelma Nadine Shoemaker

Our Precious Mother Thelma Nadine Shoemaker, age 75 laid her body to rest and traveled to heaven in spirit with our Heavenly Father at 6:36AM on October 24th, 2021 at her home outside of Lowry City, Missouri surrounded by her family who will continue to honor her legacy by staying close and living our lives to the fullest.

Funeral service will be held at 2:00 PM on Thursday, October 28, 2021 at Vansant-Mills Chapel in Clinton, Missouri with visitation from 1:00 - 2:00 PM prior to the service. Cremation to follow with a graveside service on Friday, November 5, 2021 at 2:00 PM at Peaceful Home Cemetery in Lowry City, Missouri. The family suggests memorial contributions be made to American Diabetes Association and can be left in care of the funeral home. Fond memories and condolences can be left online at www.vansant-millsfuneralhome.com

Thelma was born on July 10th 1946 in Independence, Missouri where she was raised by her amazing parents, Lenora and George Godfrey, with love and great family values along with her five siblings. Thelma loved the life of a teenager, going to dances and hanging out with friends and family always laughing and having a great time!! Thelma was heaven sent to most everyone she met; always had great advice and just her calm loving personality could put you at ease.

Thelma met Douglas Shoemaker in the summer of 1964 and by September 5th they were engaged, Doug knew by then he had met a true angel. They were married on June 6th 1965 and started their journey as man and wife. Thelma’s passion moved on from that teenage life to her new life of marriage and motherhood and this is where she found her true happiness!! If there was anything Thelma was put on this earth for, it was definitely being a mother!! Thelma’s life was dedicated to her children and their happiness and making sure they knew how much she loved them. Thelma especially loved her role as a Nana. She deeply loved her family including all her extended family. She has touched the lives of so many with her unconditional love, generosity and kindness. She always spoke the words of advice, “Life is a journey, it’s up to you to write it.”

Thelma truly lived life to the fullest through simple pleasures which brought great joy to Thelma. She had the ability to find happiness in her daily activities such as riding the side by side through the woods and enjoying nature to watching over her great grandchildren.

From the Adrian School District

October 28, 2021
Dear Parents,
I am reaching out to you today to notify you that per our masking plan we have been at 5% or below of students and staff on isolation or quarantine for 21 days. Starting Friday October 29th, we will highly recommend masking in the buildings but it will not be required.

However, if a teacher requires masking in their classroom we will support that teacher. I will remind you that it is federally mandated to wear masks on any public transportation so masks will still be required on our school buses.

If the district reaches 10% at a building level then the masking requirements will be put back in place for that building. Please feel free to visit our district website to review our Adrian Schools Safe Return to In-Person Instruction and Continuity of Service Plan.
Thank You,
Don Lile
Adrian RIII Superintendent

Butler and Drexel Remain Undefeated

Local Sports Roundup by Cameron Hook

Football season came winding down last week. With the regular season coming to a close, we will be going over the scores from quite a few local teams, and looking at how each finished their season. So without further ado, let us take a look at the Sports Round-Up.

As we did last week, we will start by looking at the hometown Butler Bears. The Bears have been incredibly successful all year. As a matter of fact, one could say they were as successful as possible, because they finished the season undefeated! That is right, your Butler Bears capped off the regular season with a win at home Friday night against Lone Jack. In what was a one-sided affair, the Bears ended their perfect regular season with a 53-6. Expect this squad to be heading into the Class 2 State Tournament with a killer mentality and a head full of steam.

Now it would be doing this next team a disservice to wait any longer to talk about their big win. The Drexel Bobcats who finished last season as District Champions, finished the regular season undefeated. They were unable to do so last season as they started the year off with a Forfeit Loss according to the MSHSAA website. This season Drexel started with a clean slate and took advantage of it, finishing 8-0. Now this team will be looking to not only repeat as District Champs, but they look to go even further. After beating St. Paul Lutheran 80-26, the Bobcats have to be brimming with confidence. Now just like every other football team they will be taking it one week at a time, but you have to think that each week they should be going into their matchup knowing that they can win. This is a spectacular 8-man team that just needs to stay focused and disciplined, if they can manage that, Coach Dean should be looking at nothing but more success with the Bobcats.

On the topic of 8-man, would it really be a local Sports Round-Up if the Whirlwinds were not covered? Archie traveled to Concordia for last week’s game and left with smiles on their faces. Archie came out on top with a final score of 84-42. It might have been nothing but offense, but the Whirlwinds finish the season 8-1. Now they shift their focus to their  next game, which will be against Appleton City. Archie will host the Bulldogs on November 5th in their first game of the postseason. The last time these two squads faced off on the gridiron it was Archie who reigned victorious. Can Archie repeat their 60-8 win over Appleton or will the Bulldogs play spoiler on the Whirlwinds already impressive season?

For the game that many fans could not wait for, Adrian won on the road against Wellington-Napoleon. The Blackhawks got the win in a 41-15 outing. This is their fourth straight win, one that came on the back of some solid defensive play. Adrian gives up 17 points per game on average, but on Friday night they managed to keep the Tigers underneath that average. Adrian, who finished the regular season at 7-2 now must prepare for the Cass Midway Vikings who they play this Friday at home. Last week Adrain took care of Midway in a dominant win, can they repeat their success or will the Vikings be able to learn from their previous mistakes against the Blackhawks?

Let us talk about Kansas for a moment. Now they might have nice roads and bad college football teams, but we are taught to love our neighbors. So it is time to look at a good Kansas football team, and since that automatically disqualifies KU, it must be the Prairie View Buffaloes right? Right. The Buffaloes came away with a very nice victory over the Anderson County Bulldogs. The final score of this matchup was 35-7. The Buffaloes move to 6-2 on the season, and begin practice this week preparing to face off against the Parsons Vikings who happen to have the same record. The game is in Parsons and with the two teams being so evenly matched on paper, you can expect it to be entertaining for all.

For the last bit of 8-man news this week, Rich Hill defended their home turf this week as they held off the visiting Liberal Bulldogs, 46-12. The Tigers should be glad they ended the season on such a high note as there have not been too many of those this year. Both teams finish the regular season at 4-5. Now, Rich Hill will get their shot at redemption, as their next game is against a Jasper team that beat them earlier in the year. Can Rich Hill pull off the revenge game or will they fall short to the Eagles on the road? We will not be getting the answer to that question until November 5th when the Tigers go on the road.

For the Sports Round-Up Game of the Week, the Butler Bears have been chosen. While this seems like a bit of a cop out as the Bears first postseason game is still undecided, (according to the MSHSAA website,) it cannot go without saying how electric Butler is this year. Regardless of who they play, the undefeated Bears are a team you do not want to miss. Bears photo courtesy of Butler High School.
