Bates County Soil and Water Conservation District 2021 Poster Contest Winners

2021 Poster Contest Luncheon by Elizabeth Davis

Due to current COVID restrictions, the Bates County Soil and Water Conservation District was unable to hold their annual Cooperator Appreciation Open House this year. In order to honor the 2021 Poster Contest winners, the Board of Supervisors voted to hold a Poster Contest Luncheon.

The luncheon was held March 18, 2021, at the First Christian Church, 11 W. Pine Street, Butler, MO, with a small group of people in attendance. This year’s theme was “Healthy Forests Healthy Communities.” Posters are judged at 50% on theme, 30% for visual appeal, 10% for originality and 10% for universal appeal.

The top contest winners from each class receive a ribbon and cash prize. In all, 213 fourth graders from eight area schools participated in the event. From each school, a first-place winner was picked, and from those eight, the field was narrowed to the four winners who were recognized at Thursday’s luncheon.

This year’s Bates County winners were as follows: 4th Place – Brendan Jones – Zion Lutheran, son of Barend & Jill Jones 3rd Place – Annabel Downs – Miami Elementary, daughter of Eric & Molly Downs 2nd Place – Jaylen Orso – Butler Elementary, daughter of Justin & Jodi Hamilton 1st Place – Kyleigh Hubbard – Hume Elementary, daughter of Kolby Hubbard & Katie Morrison Each county winner received a plaque in addition to the ribbon and cash prize for placing first in their school.

The first-place county poster will advance to the State level competition. State Poster Contest winners will be announced at the Annual Training Conference held in November, at TanTarA Resort. We would like to thank the schools, teachers and parents for allowing their students to be a part of this activity. We are especially thankful to all the students who submitted a poster.

You are the future of our Conservation Nation. Each and every one of the posters showed a genuine interest in preserving our Natural Resources through good conservation practices. Even though we had to limit attendance to a small group this year, everyone had an enjoyable time. All who attended were much appreciated for making a fun ‘lunch hour awards’ for the four county winners. Board Members in attendance were: Mark Nelson, Chairman; Mike Rapp, ViceChairman; Dillion Franklin, Treasurer and Darrel Tehnholder, Member.

Personnel in attendance were: Brad Powell and Elizabeth Davis, SWCD staff. We would like to thank everyone that attended our Poster Contest Luncheon and hope that next year we can get back to more of a ‘normal’ gathering for recognition of these fourth-grade students that do an outstanding job on their posters.

Here are the identities from left to right: Mark Nelson, Bates County SWCD Chairman; Brendan Jones, Zion Lutheran, 4th place County Winner; Annabell Downs, Miami Elementary, 3rd place County Winner; Jaylen Orso, Butler Elementary, 2nd place County Winner; Kyleigh Hubbard, Hume Elementary, 1st place County Winner.

Touching down IS the hardest part...

What’s Up
By LeRoy Cook

Is it March, or April? The sodden skies last week were more like the 4th month, even though we dealt with some 50 mph March wind gusts as well. Needless to say, flying was limited to a very few good times last week. A couple of Cessna 150 training missions went out, but that was about it. The B-2 bombers were heard but not seen, climbing out on their regular route over the Butler VORTAC.

Plans are going forward bravely for the major airshows, attempting to make up for the Covid-scared cancellations in 2020. Reasonable precautions are being taken to keep people unbunched and disinfected. A big outdoor venue like an airshow is a lot safer than being bunched up in a concert hall or sporting event. About one month from now the big East Coast show, Sun ‘n Fun, will kick off in Lakeland, Florida, where Northeners shed their big coats and redden themselves in the Florida sun.

The St. Joseph, MO airshow, with the U.S. Air Force Thunderbirds, will be held June 1 and 2. The Big One, EAA AirVenture Oshkosh, starts on July 26 and runs through August 1. Thus far, the lineup of events there looks pretty much normal. The Samaritan’s Purse emergency relief airplane, a DC-8 cargo plane, will be on display. We hope for better weather by then.

We often get asked “What’s the hardest thing about landing an airplane?” I’m tempted to answer “the asphalt” but that would flippant so I’ll say “getting the airplane as low and slow as you can.” Pilots tend to level off too high in their landing, fearing of touching down before they are ready, and if they don’t slow down sufficiently they’ll drop in from 3 or 5 feet up. The smoothest touchdowns come from a nose-high landing 6 inches off the runway. I tell them it was easier when we had a grass strip, ‘cause we could level off and feel the grass slapping the bottom of the tires.

Airline pilots, and Naval Aviators landing on aircraft carriers, know that you can land and get stopped in a short space, or land soft and gently. But you can’t do both at the same time. Hitting an exact landing spot with a fast jet means you can’t be nice; you just have to bang it on and stand on the brakes. Anyway, that’s my excuse for the rough landings I sometimes make; I’m just practicing for a spot landing.

Last week’s brain-teaser wanted to know the state in which Charles Lindbergh was born. It was Minnesota. I’ve been to the LindberghMuseum in his boyhood home, at Little Falls, and found that it was as much about his father, Charles Sr., a U.S. Congressman, as Lindy. Our question for next week is “with regard to electric airplane motors, how many horsepower are in a kilowatt?” Your answer can be sent to kochhaus1@gmail.com.

1st Annual Autumn Acres Family Farm Easter Egg Hunt!

Join us for our 1st Annual Autumn Acres Family Farm Easter Egg Hunt!

A Quick Blast of Winter!

Here is the graphical depiction of the Winter Weather Advisory and forecast snow totals for late tonight into tomorrow morning. Heavier accumulations will be found on grassy and elevated surfaces.

Road temperatures are warm enough where accumulations on roadway should be reduced...especially with low temperatures remaining in the mid 30s tomorrow morning. Either way prepare for a potentially messy morning commute

Put this on your calendar

On Monday March 15, 2021, the Archie R-V Board of Education voted to approve using Friday April 16, 2021 as a Make-up Weather Day instead of a teacher PD Day. Students have missed 4 days this school year due to weather.

The make-up days will now be the following Fridays: April 16th, April 23rd, April 30th and May 7th. This change will allow the district to still have the last day of school being Friday May 14, 2021.

In the event of any further missed weather days, those days will be used as AMI (Alternative Method of Instruction) Days, i.e. Virtual Days.

If desired, and in lieu of flowers, friends may make donations to assist with Penny’s remaining medical expenses through cash or venmo donations to either of her daughters.

No permission to continue operation for Kansas City Beef in Butler

stock photo
Since last Fall, the fate of the Kansas City Beef Company has been 'on the table' with the city of Butler and last night, a decision was made- the council voted not to allow the company to continue operations.

A quick recap, Kansas City Beef began operations of cutting and packaging beef slaughtered off site last June at the former Thorco location in south Butler with proper permission, or so it seemed. The initial interpretation of the city zoning map indicated that the property was zoned heavy industrial, which would allow processing on site but later was discovered the area was indeed light industrial, which does not allow for it.

The discovery of the zoning issue was brought to light last Fall, and since then correcting the mistake has been rather complicated thanks to due process- such changes must first pass through the planning and zoning commission, then on to the council for final say. However, along the way, meetings had to be rescheduled due to lack of quorum and a few other reasons which led to a final decision made last night- some eight months after Kansas City Beef opened their doors.

As the meeting was underway,  Nick Yoder, co-owner of the company regressed by saying that they no longer are requesting permission to slaughter on site but would like to continue business as usual, cutting and packing however this action would still require rezoning. It was also noted that this change of request would again have to pass through the planning and zoning commission then again, be passed to the council for a final decision.

Yoder's request to restart the process was voted down 4-3 (councilman Sargent was not present) thus ending the operation of the Kansas City Beef company in Butler.

Otherwise in the rather lengthy session, the council voted unanimously to adopt an ordinance that would allow the city to move $200,000 into a reserve fund for emergency use; approved the 2021/2022 budget; and approved a lot consolidation.

Some good news, attorney Joe Lauber provided information regarding the American Recovery Act, which is federal money available for covid relief. Unlike previous programs, ARA is available directly to the city, and the council is investigating what expenses are eligible for reimbursement.

The Butler Health Department has money available to purchase equipment for the parks department and the decision was made to purchase a wheelchair swing as there are many in our community who would enjoy using it.

A long discussion was held about building a sidewalk for folks to use to walk/ride bikes safely along west 52 to Walmart and other stores 'out west'. The biggest roadblock would be getting changes made to the railroad overpass, the city has looked into this before and it appears the railroad is highly resistant to change, and even if so, would be nearly cost prohibitive. Possibly another clear route via Ohio street to Prospect could be a solution.

The council also approved a machine that will sleeve a manhole (Butler has around 600) that will save a substantial amount of money vs hiring a contractor for the same work.

Remember, the Butler city council meets every first and third Tuesdays at 7 pm. Meetings will be held online via Zoom until further notice.
