MoDOT News Release: Multi-day winter storm threatens travel in Missouri

January 31, 2022 – For immediate release.

Multi-day winter storm threatens travel in Missouri: Ice, accumulating snow, bitter temperatures forecast through week’s end

JEFFERSON CITY – Major winter weather is forecast for much of the state beginning overnight Tuesday and continuing through the end of the week. The Missouri Department of Transportation urges people to stay off the roads if at all possible during the periods of ice and snow. If you must travel this week, use extra caution, anticipate slower travel times and consult the Traveler Information Map for road conditions.

“This is a potentially severe winter storm that will play out over several days and dump a mixed bag of freezing precipitation on most of the state,” said MoDOT Director Patrick McKenna. “Up to 12 inches or more of snow has been forecast for portions of Missouri and other areas may receive freezing rain, ice and sleet in advance of the snowfall.”

All available crews will be out across the state working 12-hour shifts throughout the day and night, but staffing is still short across the state due to turnover and sickness. “It may take crews longer to return roads to a mostly clear status after the storm ends later this week,” McKenna said.

Rain is forecast to precede the winter event, making it difficult to treat roads ahead of the storm. To make matters worse, bitter temperatures following the snow and ice will limit the effectiveness of chemicals used to clear covered roads.

“This winter storm has the potential to create extremely hazardous driving conditions for most of the state,” said McKenna. “We urge all drivers to plan to get to their destinations ahead of the storm and be prepared to stay there. If you can, stay home and give us room to work. Remember, every stranded car slows down the snowplow’s ability to clear the roads and prevents emergency vehicles from reaching their destinations.”

Should you be involved in a minor crash or slide off the road, remain in your vehicle with the seat belt buckled. Equip your vehicle with a winter weather emergency kit before you travel in winter weather. Include any necessary medications, a phone charger, a blanket, bottled water, nonperishable foods and a flashlight. For more items to include in a winter weather emergency kit, visit modot.org/winter.

Check current Missouri road conditions on the Traveler Information Map at www.modot.org, or through MoDOT’s smartphone app, available for iPhone and Android phones.

You can also find road conditions and warnings by following MoDOT on Facebook and Twitter or by calling 888-ASK-MODOT (888-275-6636) to speak with a customer service representative 24 hours a day, seven days a week, 365 days a year.

Obituary - Marian Elizabeth (Wheatley) Eikenbary

Marian Elizabeth Eikenbary, 101, passed away at MedicaLodges in Butler, Missouri, on January 26, 2022. Marian was born on September 11, 1920 at home to Fred and Nell (Ayer) Wheatley. The third of nine siblings, she was the oldest girl. She was a tireless help to her mother and sewed her own clothes and those of her younger sisters.

Marian attended Rich Hill High School and graduated class of 1938. The love of her life, Lloyd Eldon (Pete) Eikenbary courted her on horseback, and they waited until she graduated to marry. They were married November 26, 1938, in the Methodist parsonage at Butler, Missouri, and started family life in a one room home in Rich Hill. They moved shortly afterwards out east of Rich Hill to Pete’s parent’s farm with an old stand of pecans, right on the Marais des Cygne river. Marian always had a love of swans, maybe because of her home place.

Soon, Eldon was born, then Kay, then Oran. She was a capable wife and mother, keeping her children safe and well fed while her husband worked jobs that took him, and their only car, away from the family Monday through Friday. She was strong, steady, self-reliant, frugal and hard working. Her joy was in her children, her pride was in her homemaking. She was a consummate housekeeper and it was well known you could eat dinner off her floor, her house was kept so spotless. She crocheted beautiful afghans and doilies, sewed clothes and doll clothes, and mended and patched Pete’s work clothes invisibly. She canned and pickled, gardened, raised meat chickens, and harvested pecans. They hosted a yearly pecan picnic and many family dinners. Her private time was often spent in writing thousands of notes to friends or writing in her journal. She was the family’s ‘recorder’: remembering everything, putting notations on backs of photos and under knick-knacks, and keeping genealogy records.

Marian travelled quite a lot in her life, though she never had a car or ever learned to drive. They purchased a streamlined (compact) 1960’s trailer so she could accompany him to his job sites. They lived in the towns of Lebanon, California, Bethany, Cameron, Lexington, Mexico and Lathrop (all in Missouri). Because she had near neighbors and could walk into town, she enjoyed this break from the farm. They spent time with their adult children and grandchildren at Mountain Home, Arkansas, in San Francisco, and went on a cruise to Alaska as well as taking various trips to visit relatives in far flung parts of the U.S. Her grandkids remember fondly staying with grandma in the trailer and visiting the town shops, or staying on the farm and playing in the pasture, and learning to make pickles, crochet and sew. And Marian enjoyed going to ball games, horse shows and track meets to watch her grandchildren.

Marian died peacefully after an extended stay at MedicaLodges, where she resided after Pete’s passing. She had her wits about her until the end and was sharp as a tack and not afraid to tell the nurses and caregivers what was what, in her gentle and brooking-no-argument tone of voice. Preceding her in death were her parents; her husband of 80 years, Pete (99); son Oran (40); brothers Kenneth, Jim, Warren, and Forrest; her sisters-in-law Elnora, June, and Doris; and her brother-in-law Floyd Buhr.

Left behind to cherish her memory are son and daughter-in-law Eldon and Karen Eikenbary (Basehor, KS); daughter and son-in-law Elvin and Brenda (Kay) Henley (Kansas City, MO); brothers Alan Wheatley and wife Delores, Wayne Wheatley; sisters Joanne Buhr (Adrian) and Janice and Ronald Bolser; sister-in-law Phyllis Wheatley and dear friend Mitzi Knight, all of Rich Hill, MO; grandchildren and spouses Brad and Ruthie Eikenbary (Kansas City, KS), Renata and John Mogilnicki (Rich Hill), Brian and Julie Eikenbary (Basehor, KS), Tracy and Brett Harrington (Prairie Village, KS) and Ryan Henley (Kansas City, MO). great-grandchildren Tanner, Ashley (Boos) and Dylan Eikenbary; Austin, Arlo and Madelyn Henley; Chloë and Lanam Harrington; Adelle, Corey and Lilliane Eikenbary; and nephews, nieces, great-nephews and great-nieces too numerous to name; and friends and neighbors dear to her.

Visitation is at 1pm, Saturday, January 29th at Heuser Funeral Home, Rich Hill, followed by services at 2pm. Burial to follow at Oak Hill Cemetery, Butler, MO. Contributions to the Mark Wheatley Scholarship Fund or Papinville Historical Association, please.

State Farm Student Athlete of the week

We are so happy to announce this week’s State Farm student athlete of the week Blaire Miller. Blaire is a senior and plays shooting guard for the Butler Lady Bears. She was nominated by her coach Brad Diehl. Coach Diehl stated “Blaire is averaging 14 points, 7.4 rebounds, 3.6 steals and one block a game.

She is a leader for our team on and off the court and one of the best players in the area.” We asked Blaire what she feels it takes to become an elite athlete. She stated “it takes full commitment throughout the entire season, but more importantly it is the work you put in during the off season every day. Every athlete works hard during the season, but it’s those who put in the work all year long who really excel.” We asked Blaire something she has learned from playing sports that she can apply later in life.

She stated “I’ve learned you have to work for want you want in life, you have to be willing to put in the work. Also, I’ve learned the importance of working together as a team. It takes teamwork to accomplish goals and win. You can’t do it alone.” When asked what she thinks it takes to be a good leader she stated “holding yourself just as accountable as you do everyone else. You have to earn respect and you can’t be a hypocrite.

You have to know people will make mistakes and take those opportunities to get better and learn.” Blaire is undecided on where she will attend college after graduation. She plans to attend a four year college and major in business/law. With hopes of pursuing a dream of hers and continuing on to law school. She hasn’t decided if she will be done playing sports or continue to play in college. It was such a pleasure talking to Blaire. We wish her and the lady Bears the best of luck as they take on Archie Saturday at 2:30 for 3rd place in the Archie Tournament.

Recent earthquake activity raises interest in Earthquake Awareness Month in Missouri

Recent earthquake activity raises interest in Earthquake Awareness Month in Missouri

Largest quake in 30 years in November serves as a reminder to prepare for earthquake safety

JEFFERSON CITY – Missourians were reminded two months ago that the state’s New Madrid Seismic Zone (NMSZ) is one of the most active seismic zones in the U.S. Just before 9 p.m. on Nov. 17, a magnitude 4.0 earthquake near Poplar Bluff rattled furniture and shook wall hangings in thousands of homes.

Missouri observes Earthquake Awareness Month each February to emphasize the very real risk of a catastrophic earthquake occurring in the NMSZ. The NMSZ, centered in southeast Missouri generated some of the most powerful earthquakes in U.S. history. A series of major quakes occurred in 1811-12, destroying buildings, ringing church bells hundreds of miles away, and briefly causing the Mississippi River to run backward.

While no one can predict exactly when an earthquake will occur, scientists agree that large earthquakes in this zone still pose a risk.

The Nov. 17 temblor was the largest in Missouri since 1991. The area averages more than 200 earthquakes each year, though most are too small to be felt.

“The November earthquake was felt as far north as St. Louis and as far south as Memphis, Tennessee,” State Emergency Management Agency Director Jim Remillard said. “While we’re grateful there was no significant damage and no one was seriously injured during that event, the shaking was another important reminder that if a major earthquake were to occur, Missouri would be directly impacted. That’s why it’s important that we are all prepared.”

As part of Earthquake Awareness Month, the Central U.S. Earthquake Consortium (CUSEC) has a two-part Facebook Live series scheduled at 10 a.m. on February 3 and February 10.

Part I: EQ Hazards & Safety

February 3 at 10:00 a.m.

Part II: EQ Hazards, Preparedness & Mitigation, and Financial Preparedness

February 10 at 10:00 a.m.

When shaking starts, the best way to stay safe is to “Drop, Cover and Hold On” to protect yourself from falling debris. Drop to your knees, cover your head and get under a desk or table if possible, and hold on until the shaking stops. Experts say that, in developed countries with modern structures, falling debris is the most common source of injuries.

It’s also important to prepare before the shaking, by taking some simple earthquake safety steps:

  • Bolt bookcases to wall studs, install strong latches on cupboards and strap your home's water heater to wall studs—if it tips over it could start a fire or gas leak, and you could lose a valuable source of water.
  • Secure overhead lighting fixtures and move heavy objects from high shelves to lower ones. Many injuries in an earthquake are caused by this falling debris.
  • Put together an emergency kit, including a flashlight, first aid kit, radio, drinking water and blankets. A major earthquake could leave families without utilities for weeks.
  • Develop a family communication plan. Identify a relative living at least 100 miles away; everyone can call to "check in" to tell family you're safe.
  • Know how to turn off your gas and water.
  • Find out if your house is covered for earthquake damage. Most homeowner insurance does not include earthquake coverage; it must be purchased separately.

Many more resources for families, schools and businesses are available on SEMA's Earthquake Preparedness webpage. Included are fact sheets, interactive maps and informational videos that show what to do in the event of an earthquake. Visit sema.dps.mo.gov/earthquake_preparedness for more information.
