Citizens and Law Enforcement team up together to take suspected thieves into custody!

Several weeks ago the Bates County Sheriff’s Office began seeing Facebook post with video surveillance footage of a truck suspected in multiple burglaries and thefts in and around Bates County and Henry County.

In a joint operation with Henry County Sheriff’s Office, Detectives set out to identify the subjects in the truck and match them with multiple surveillance camera footage. During this time, multiple citizens called Detectives with information about the owners of the truck and last known location of them. Several times the Sheriff’s Office received calls about the area of the truck but when deputies arrived the truck had fled the area.

On 11/28/2022 at approximately 930 AM a K9 unit received a call from an observant citizen who led the Deputies to the area of where the truck was located. Once in the area deputies were able to get the vehicle stopped and the two subjects inside taken into custody. The driver was arrested for Felony Driving While Revoked.

The passenger was also arrested for two traffic warrants. Once the two were in custody, Detectives notified Henry County Detectives and they responded to the area to assist in the investigation.

During the investigation the Detectives were able to link a third subject to the thefts and burglaries. The driver of the truck was identified as Dallas Gamblin of rural Archie Mo. Gamblin is being held in the Bates County Jail on a $2500 Cash Bond.

The passenger was identified as Hannah M Briggs of rural Archie Mo was released after posting bond on $250 traffic warrants.

The Detectives and Deputies from Henry County Sheriff’s Office and Bates County Sheriff’s Office began looking for the known associate of the above two people. At approximately 3:30pm a Detective patrolling the area observed the third person driving down a gravel road. The Detective made a traffic stop on the vehicle he was driving. That subject was identified as Joshua E Brown of Holden, Missouri.

Josh Brown is known to the Sheriff’s Office from a previous extensive investigation of multiple burglaries and thefts that spread from 2011 to 2012 and across two states. Mr. Brown was eventually taken into custody in a joint operation with Kansas Authorities and Bates County Sheriff’s Office in 2012.

Josh Brown has been charged with Possession of a Controlled Substance-Methamphetamine, Unlawful use of Paraphernalia, Failed to register motor vehicle and operating a motor vehicle with no insurance. His bond was set at $50,000.00 cash only set by the Honorable Judge Highley.

Both Brown’s and Gamblin’s vehicles were towed from the scene.

The theft investigations with Henry County and Bates County are ongoing and additional charges are being sought by law enforcement to each county’s respective Prosecuting Attorneys.

"This is a great example of Law Enforcement working together with our citizens and each other to stop rural thefts in our counties. We could not be successful without the great relationship we have with our citizens." Says Sheriff Anderson

We will never forget this day!

On November 29, 1988, at approximately 3:40 a.m., the Kansas City Fire Department responded to a vehicle fire at a construction site along U.S. Highway 71 near 87th Street. During the 911 call, a security guard in the background could be heard saying “the explosives are on fire.” Pumper 41 was assigned to the alarm. Dispatchers cautioned Pumper 41 of the potential for explosives at the scene.

At 3:46 a.m., Pumper 41 arrived on-scene and found two separate fires burning and requested an additional pumper be dispatched to assist. Pumper 30 was assigned and arrived on-scene at 3:52 a.m. Discovering multiple fires at the scene, the Incident Commander suspected intentionally set fires and requested law enforcement officers respond to the scene. At approximately 3:57 a.m., Pumper 30 requested a Battalion Chief be dispatched “emergency” to assist. Over the next several minutes, it became clear there was confusion as to if there were actually any explosives on site, or if any were involved in the fires. 4

At 4:02 a.m., a truck, trailer, and large industrial compressor were burning. There is no indication that any of the vehicles, or trailer, were marked indicating the presence of explosives, as markings were not required by the ATF or DOT at that time.

Unknown to the crews of Pumper 41 and 30, the trailer that was burning was actually an explosives storage magazine. At 4:04 a.m., Pumper 41 contacted the Battalion Chief stating that “he’s got magnesium or something burning up here.”

The Battalion Chief and driver were just arriving on-scene and staged approximately ¼ mile from the scene. At 4:08 a.m., 22 minutes after the arrival of Pumper 41, and 16 minutes after the arrival of Pumper 30, the magazine exploded, killing six Kansas City fire fighters. The Battalion Chief and his driver both suffered minor injuries when the windshield of their staff vehicle was blown in. Approximately 40 minutes after the first explosion, a second explosion occurred with several additional, smaller explosions.

The crater from the initial blast measured 80 feet in diameter and eight feet deep, the crater from the second blast measured 100 feet in diameter and eight feet deep. The subsequent investigation revealed the first explosion involved 20,500 pounds of ammonium nitrate/fuel oil mixture. The second magazine trailer contained 1,000 30-pound containers of ammonium nitrate/fuel oil mixture.

In 1989, the Kansas City Council passed an ordinance adopting the NFPA-704 marking system. The Kansas City Fire Department also implemented new policies requiring notification of blasting material and projects within its jurisdiction. The Occupational Safety and Health Administration adopted regulations requiring all hazardous material transportation containers to maintain appropriate DOT placarding and labels when used as fixed storage.

Also in 1989, the Kansas City Fire Department Hazardous Materials Team was established. The numbers 41 and 30 (Pumper 41 and Pumper 30) were merged to form Hazmat 71 in honor of the crews lost in this incident.

We will never forget the six lives that were lost!

Updated Obituary - Walter William Mellenbruch

Walter William Mellenbruch, age 80, was born June 7, 1942 to William Vernon and Syrelda Irene (Stoddard)Mellenbruch at their country home west of Rich Hill. He passed on to Heaven on November 25, 2022 at his own country home, not a mile from where he was born.

Walt graduated from Rich Hill High School in 1960, and began dating “the girl next door,” Norma Lea Drysdale. Since red was his favorite color, she was a good choice with her bright red hair. He and Norma Lea weremarried in 1961, and spent the next 61 years together. This union was blessed with three children: Michael Alan, Lori Ann,and Bruce Wesley. He was a member of the Foster Christian Church, and served as an elder for a time.

Walt, also known as “The Ridge Runner”, spent many years as a dairy and grain farmer. As his physical abilities changed, Walt made whatever changes and adaptations were necessary to maintain a great quality of life. He began raising beef cattle and started on a whole new endeavor involving computers. Following a brief computer course, Walt devoted himself to hours of study, teaching himself all aspects of computer building and repair. Many schools, businesses, and individuals benefited from his work. He spent as many hours as necessary to ensure that his customers were satisfied. Walt was not all work and no play. As a young man, he had a “need for speed”, and enjoyed tractor pulling for a number of years. Who could forget the motorcycle he adapted to accommodate his wheelchair. It was a marvel to see him

racing down the highway in that unique machine. He thought about the need for speed right up to the very end, because recently he was talking about it and said, “Someday when I get to Heaven and get my wings I am going to break the sound barrier.” He was an avid outdoorsman, spending many hours hunting, fishing, and finding arrowheads, teaching his skills to his children and grandchildren. Traveling was something else Walt greatly enjoyed. He, Norma Lea, and the whole family saw many parts of the United States, and he went on cruises to Hawaii and the Caribbean. But he didn’t have to travel far to have a good time. Out in the back yard he ate many a “salad” of sticks, grass, and dandelions made by a proud granddaughter. Who could forget the hours the grandkids, nieces, and nephews spent in the computer room, playing games against Walt and each other. He was proud of all his children and grandchildren; they were truly the apple of his eye. There was no challenge too big for Walter. He was driven and determined. When a problem arose, he would spend some time in thought, and say, “Okay; this is what we’re going to do.” He cheered and motivated so many people.

He never knew a stranger, and loved to visit and joke with everyone he met. Walt’s positive attitude toward life, his generosity, and love for others is a legacy that will not be forgotten. Walter is survived by his wife, Norma Lea Mellenbruch, of the home; sons Mike Mellenbruch (Vianne), and Bruce Mellenbruch (Chanda) of Rich Hill, Mo.; daughter Lori King (Rick) of Butler, Mo.; two sisters, Carolyn McCombs of Webb City, Mo. and Linda McClanahan (Jerry) of Carthage, Mo. He is also survived by fourteen grandchildren: Steven Mellenbruch (Samantha), Ashli Bowen (Edward), Michael Norton (Sarah), Derek Norton (Katie), Brandon Norton (Caitlyn), Brett Norton, Will Rapp, Colton Mellenbruch (Cassie), and Kendra Smith (Josh), Holly Kauffman, Chelsea Tourtillott, Brittany Williams (Dakota), Breanna Tourtillott, Cody Hartline, Tiffany Taylor(Amanda) and Kristen Arndt(Gus). He is further survived by 32 great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents and his brother, Clint Mellenbruch.

Funeral service will be 11 am Tuesday, November 29, 2022 at the Heuser Funeral Home, Rich Hill, Missouri. Burial will be in the Green Lawn Cemetery, Rich Hill. Visitation will be held from 10 am to service time Tuesday at the Heuser Chapel. Memorial contributions are suggested to the Foster Christian Church. Online condolences can be left at www.heuserfunerals.com.

Obituary - Jimmie Dale “Jim” McCauley

Jimmie Dale “Jim” McCauley born March 6th, 1936, went to be with the Lord on November 25, 2022. He was born “100 years to the day from the day the Alamo fell”—one of his favorite sayings.

Jim never met a stranger; he made friends everywhere he went. He could always strike up a conversation, no matter who the person was. Jim was a hard worker and taught his family those values. He was diagnosed with Parkinson’s disease and fought it with grit and determination for over 30 years.

Jim was born on the family farm in Nixa, Missouri and was a farmer his entire life. His only time away from the farm was to attend the University of Missouri, completing a degree in Agriculture. Jim farmed with his father Orville until his retirement. They had milk cows, beef cows, chickens, sheep, hogs, and grew row crops to feed their animals. Jim followed in his father’s and grandfather’s footsteps with a passion for the land and custom farming for other local farmers in Christian and Greene counties. He had his own semi-truck and hauled many loads of grain and hay both for himself and others.

Jim worked hard to be successful in everything he did—farming, raising a family, and his hobbies. He won many, many races in go carts and drag racing—setting a national record in his class that stood for many years. He was an avid John Deere tractor collector and collected many Dodge and Plymouth muscle cars. Some of his cars have been featured in national magazines. He won several national and regional car shows and was very proud of his accomplishments.

Jim served on the Nixa school board for 20 years. Being a graduate of Nixa, he was very proud to give back to his community during a time of rapid growth. He enjoyed supporting and attending school activities and sporting events in Nixa, watching his children, grandchildren and now great grandchildren compete.

Jim was very active in the Ozarks Steam Engine Association almost from the beginning. He served as President, Vice President, and many years as the Secretary and Treasurer. Jim was instrumental in growing the association and hauled most of the steam engines and equipment at one time or another.

Jim was preceded in death by his parents, Orville and Aggie McCauley; and two sisters, Evelyn (Gary) Scholten; and Edith Herndon.

He is survived by the love of his life of 64 years, wife Delma McCauley; a brother, Dwight McCauley; three children, Delinda (Terry) Phillips, Kathy (Kevin) Heitland, and Randy McCauley; seven grandchildren who lovingly called him “Pa”, Brianne (Wes) Yancey, Amy (Jeremy) Coffman, Ashlee Luko, Garrett (Hollie) Calhoun, Joshua McCauley, Kaylee McCauley (Dylan Clift), and Dylan McCauley; four great grandchildren, Cooper Coffman, William Coffman, Brynnlee Yancey and Brooks Yancey; and long-time friend and caregiver, Brenda Fitzpatrick.

Visitation will be held on Tuesday, November 29, 2022, from 6:00 p.m. until 8:00 p.m. at Adams Funeral Home, Nixa. Funeral services will be held on Wednesday, November 30, 2022, at 10:00 a.m. at Adams Funeral Home in Nixa. Burial will follow the service at McCauley Cemetery.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Nixa FFA chapter or the Ozarks Steam Engine Association in Jim’s name.

Obituary - Wayne Phillip Wheatley

Wayne Phillip Wheatley passed away on November 28, 2022 at Medicalodge Nursing Home in Butler, MO.

Wayne was born a twin on April 23, 1925, one of nine children to Fred and Nell Ayer Wheatley on the family farm. It is still up for discussion who was born first—but we think it was very close.

Wayne attended Mission Branch and then Rich Hill High School, graduating in 1944. The roller skating rink in Rich Hill was a popular place on Saturday nights with Wayne and Warren and classmate, Doris. After graduation, Wayne immediately started his long farming career of 63 years. Wayne was a member of Mound Zion Methodist Church and later in life transferred his membership to Rich Hill Methodist Church.

In December 1945, he married his high school sweetheart, Doris Wanda Lee Essenpries. They were the proud parents of Terry Wayne, born December 31, 1948, and Larry Alan, born November 12, 1953. Wayne and Doris’ marriage of 71 years was that of a true farm family—milk cows, row crops, cattle, and all the work that came with it. He enjoyed his “free time” tractor pulling in the area. Helping by his side was his trusted farmhand, Dorsey Durfee, who worked for Wayne for many years, living a short distance from the family farm.

Starting in April 1946, for 51 years the birthday of Wayne and Warren was celebrated with a family picnic. The afternoon was spent visiting, roasting hot dogs, drinking unlimited cans of pop, family baseball, and horseshoes. The last picnic was held in 1997.

Wayne hauled cattle to the KC Stockyards for the area on Sunday evenings, stopping back in Harrisonville on the way home, enjoying a meal at the Wagon Wheel. Wayne and business partners bought the RH Sale Barn and conducted weekly sales for the surrounding community. He enjoyed being active in many organizations in his life, always willing to help the community. Organizations and clubs included the Butler Saddle Club, Federal Land Bank, Production Credit Association, and Rich Hill Elks.

He spent 6 years serving the residents of Bates County as Southern Judge. Wayne was proud to be a charter 50-year-member of the Rich Hill Lions Club. If you were born into the Wheatley family, you were destined to play cards, with pitch being the game of choice. In later years, Wayne enjoyed afternoons at the Pitch Parlor spent with his brothers Alan and Jim as well as other community members.

In 2007, Wayne had a dispersal auction of his farming equipment. He remained in the family home until he deemed it was time to move to town in 2013, purchasing a home on Park Avenue. He was exceptionally proud of having one the best seats in town for the 4th of July Parade. He told Terry and Ruth to let him know when his bed was moved so he would know where to sleep that night. He enjoyed his days in town. A regular morning routine included a stop by Wheatley Bookkeeping to check on Sonny Boy. He enjoyed many meals at Rich Hill Café with great-granddaughter Avery.

Wayne was preceded in death by his wife, Doris and son, Larry. Wayne is survived by his son, Terry Wheatley and wife Ruth; granddaughter, Tara Wheatley; great-granddaughter, Avery Wheatley; brother, Alan; sisters, Joanne Buhr, and Janice (Ronald) Bolser; sister-in-law, Phyllis Wheatley; special family friend, Mitzi Knight; nieces, nephews, and numerous friends.

The family suggests contributions to the Mark Wheatley Memorial Scholarship in care of Heuser Funeral Home. Funeral Service will be Thursday, December 1, 2022 at 2:00 p.m. Heuser Funeral Home in Rich Hill, MO with visitation from 1:00-2:00 p.m. Interment will be at Green Lawn Cemetery, Rich Hill, MO.
