Update: Police Pursuit from today

Update from pursuit earlier today.

During the pursuit the pursuing officers visibility was reduced due to road dust. The two patrol vehicles failed to negotiate a T intersection and struck the embankment.

The initial patrol vehicle was driven by a deputy and the second patrol vehicle was a municipal officer assisting in the pursuit.

The deputy and a passenger that works in the jail were transported by other deputies to the hospital where they were treated for fairly minor injuries. The municipal officer was transported by deputies to the hospital for more serious injuries. All three were later released.

The suspect was apprehended by the Henry County Sheriff’s Office and the Missouri State Highway Patrol. The vehicle was traveling at slower speeds and came to a stop when it apparently ran out of gas.

We would like to thank all of those citizens who worked with law enforcement to give continued information about the last known location of the suspect vehicle.

We would like to thank all of those who have reached out and offered prayers and support to the injured Deputies and Officer.

This is a reminder of the dangers that law enforcement officers across this country face everyday in the line of duty. They continue to perform these dangerous duties daily at personal risk of injury or death to continue to fight career criminals and to do their part to make our communities safe. We welcome continued prayers for all our law enforcement in Bates County an across the country.

Obituary - Barbara Mae (Richards) Brown

Barbara Mae (Richards) Brown, 84 of Butler, Missouri passed into the arms of her Savior Friday, December 30, 2022 at Bates County Memorial Hospital.

A visitation will be held from 1:00 to 2:00 pm Monday, January 2, 2022 at Mullinax Funeral Home, Butler (660-679-0009).

Graveside services will follow at 2:00 pm Monday in Oak Hill Cemetery, Butler. In lieu of flowers and in honor of Barbara’s care for others, the family recommends memorials that provide caregiving for others to the organization of the donor’s choice. Messages of condolence and memories may be left for the family at www.mullinaxfuneralhome.com.

Born to Glenn and Bessie (Rudy) Richards February 21, 1938 in Salina, Kansas, Barbara grew up on her family’s farm and graduated from Solomon High School, marrying her high school sweetheart February 1, 1957. During their sixty years of marriage, she and Ed lived in New Cambria, Salina, Spring Hill and Overland Park, Kansas, Decatur, Illinois, and retired to Archie, Missouri. Because of her gift of caring for others, Barbara made every place they lived a home, even a slide in camper during a summer work stint for Ed in Cincinnati!

“Homemaker” does not fully encompass who Barbara was, however. If something needed to be done, she was never hesitant to roll up her sleeves and figure out how to accomplish it. She was an incredible seamstress whose projects looked as perfect on the inside as the outside and loved having her hands in the dirt, raising a bountiful garden many years, planting and pruning fruit trees and learning to drive a small tractor and mower to care for their 7-acre farm even after Ed passed away in 2017. She loved entertaining her family, frequently using the “good dishes” when they came to visit. She was quick to give the gift of care for not only her children, but also grandchildren when needed, and ultimately, her husband as his health declined. Barbara often mentioned a tangible awareness of God’s presence in her life and was confident His hand was always on her.

She had a distinctively beautiful whistle than once earned her a whistling solo in a school program when she improvised one the previous year as a child! She loved to play Pitch and never met a cleaning project that Barbara and a bottle of Clorox couldn’t tackle! Fiercely independent, she could be seen standing in the bucket of the tractor cutting limbs, re-arranging heavy furniture, and making independent road trips to doctors’ appointments, family visits, or shopping trips with her faithful 4- legged companion, Lady, well into her 80s. While she loved and drank milk her entire life, she enjoyed a fire-cooked hotdog topped with toasted marshmallows, and would never turn down a bottle of Pepsi and a Hershey bar. She was quick to laugh and had a distinctive “look” God only gives to mothers that she used effectively her whole life.

Barbara was preceded in death by her husband, Edmonde, her brothers Arnold and Tom, and her daughter-in-law, Brenda. She is survived by her three children: Gregory (Denise) Brown of Abilene, Kansas, Russell Brown of McLouth, Kansas, and Michele (Lisa) Peterson of Butler, Missouri, 9 grandchildren, 20 great grandchildren, her sister, Linda (Michael) Decker of Pittsburg, KS, her brother and sister-in-law Delos and Judy Brown of New Cambria, KS and sister-in law Donna Richards of Solomon, Kansas.

He had his father-in-law teach him how to process meat and set up what the kids referred to as his “meat box” to process fresh meat from the farm. He loved to camp and float, even buying enough canoes for the whole family to go together. He would often spearhead the grill on family camping trips. He often worked behind the scenes in the community and would volunteer to help work on the baseball and tennis court fences, dunk tank, and the Appleton City Carousel. Two Pittsburg Kansas women arrested for burglaries

Thursday, December 29, 2022
Released by Lt. Rebekah Lynch

On Thursday morning, December 29, 2022, at approximately 4:14 a.m., officers with the Pittsburg Police Department were dispatched to a residence in the 1700 block of South Walnut Street for a burglary in progress. The reporting party called 911 and reported two subjects were stealing tires from his carport. Officers quickly arrived in the area and began searching for the suspects. The reporting party had surveillance cameras and was able to show officers the video footage of the crime as it had just occurred; as well as, video footage from a previous theft of items from the same carport the previous night. Video surveillance footage from December 28, 2022 showed suspects driving a Buick passenger car stealing items from the carport.

At approximately 4:24 a.m. on December 29, 2022, an officer spotted a 2000 Buick Regal occupied by two females near the area. The females were identified as 43-year old Carrie Kay Devore, of Pittsburg, and 41-year-old Kandice Jean Devore, of Pittsburg. During the investigation, officers determined the vehicle driven by Carrie Devore, appeared to be the same vehicle observed in the video surveillance footage of the theft from December 28, 2022. In the video footage observed from the incident which had just occurred, it was determined the clothing worn by the suspects seen stealing tires from inside the carport, matched the clothing worn by Carrie and Kandice Devore.

Carrie Devore and Kandice Devore were placed under arrest, without incident, and transported to the Crawford County Jail. They were both booked in on one count of burglary of a non-dwelling and misdemeanor theft. Both are being held without bond at this time. The tires stolen from the victim were located on a nearby property and returned to the owner.

Anyone having information related to this incident, or other incidents, is urged to contact the Pittsburg Police Department at 620-231-1700, or at our tip line, 620-231-TIPS (8477). Callers may remain anonymous.

Home invasion in Vernon County leads to arrest of El Dorado man

An El Dorado resident is in custody after an armed robbery took place west of Nevada last week. According to officials with the Vernon County Sheriff’s Office, Deputies responded to a 911 call of a home intruder with a gun on December 21.

The suspect stole items from the residence and left shortly before deputies arrived. Vernon County Sheriff Jason Mosher said detectives developed a suspect from a previous crime at the same residence and responded to an address in El Dorado Springs the following day (Dec. 22).

With the assistance of the El Dorado Springs Police Department, a home was surrounded, and a search warrant was applied for. The year in review

This being the last column of the year, it’s as good a time as any to take stock of the year’s accomplishments and disappointments. The main success has to be that we came through an election and the nation survives. All the rhetoric has cooled off and we can get back to managing the tasks before us. On the aviation side, who would have known that the year would end without the familiar sound of B-2 bombers roaring overhead? The Air Force has grounded all 20 of the Spirits while studying last month’s runway excursion and fire.

On the local scene, 2022 was the year the 50-year-old Consultechs building at Butler airport was removed, leaving a blank concrete pad. It also saw the construction of a gate on the south drive, which will be closed to block off what will become a taxiway instead of a road. The FAA’s standards for airports do not permit dual use of pavement. And after years of darkness, the rotating light beacon was put back in service, part of a ramp and taxiway refurbishment.

Due to the severe cold and snow last week, there wasn’t much movement in and out of the airport. The amount of snow wasn’t significant, best left to nature to remove it, but getting airplanes to run in the minus-ten temperature required a heated hangar or massive engine heat before attempting a start. Even the preflight inspection was painful to contemplate.

National news revealed that, in coverage of the 4000-page pork-barrel omnibus funding bill passed in haste by a lame-duck congress last week, it included a provision allowing Boeing to complete certification of its new 737 Max 10 and 7 airliners under the rules that existed when it applied for certification. Given the controversy surrounding the Max, there had been a clamor to change the rules mid-game on Boeing, making it go back to the drawing board. Congress took the option away from the FAA, ending the debate.

There have been a couple of in-flight injury incidents caused by turbulent air recently. These are cases of people being tossed around in the cabin, notably flight attendants moving around doing their jobs. Hiwaiian Airlines had 36 people hurt on descent to Honolulu and United had a similar incident on a Rio-to-Houston flight. As a pilot/passenger, I always stay buckled up when in my seat, but I see lots of fellow passengers sprawling unbuckled, as if they were in their living room watching TV. Rough air can happen anytime, so take care in the air.

Our weekly question asked why the “Hurricane Hunters” storm chasers chose the Lockheed Hercules for their hazardous work, flying in and out of hurricanes to track the storms.  When asked why the Herc, one veteran storm pilot said “because those were only ones we got back.”  For next year, we’ll start with “what’s the true meaning of the word ‘Roger’ in a radio reply?” Send your answers to kochhaus1@gmail.com.

The Department of Economic Development (DED) encourages all Missourians to participate in the FCC’s broadband map challenge opportunity as its Office of Broadband Development works to expand access to high-speed internet statewide. The challenge opportunity will identify errors in the new FCC maps that would prevent Missouri from receiving its full share of funding through the upcoming Broadband Equity, Access, and Deployment (BEAD) Program. Errors could relate to physical locations or types of internet service availability. To ensure coverage for homes, businesses, and communities is accurately represented, any citizen can participate. All challenges submitted prior to January 13, 2023, will be considered. Investment, and Jobs Act (IIJA).

The state will use BEAD funding for its Connecting All Missourians initiative, which aims to provide high-quality internet statewide. Go to ded.mo.gov/get connected and check the FCC map to see if you’re listed correctly.
