Obituary - Terry "Squeak" Kendrick

Terry "Squeak" Kendrick, 76, of Adrian, MO passed away on Wednesday, February 22, 2023, at Bates County Memorial Hospital in Butler, MO.

Memorial Visitation will be on Saturday, March 4, 2023, from 10:30 AM - 12:00 PM at Atkinson Funeral Home in Adrian, MO. A celebration of life will be held at 47 E Main St, Adrian, MO following the visitation. Private inurnment at Crescent Hill Cemetery in Adrian, MO.

Terry was born on September 21, 1946, to Claude and Marianna (Noel) Kendrick in Adrian, MO. Terry earned the nickname "Squeak" early in his construction career working with Don King Construction, which affectionately stuck with his family and friends.

Terry was known for searching around town or waiting for treasures to be dropped off, but his true passion was Squeaks Little Party Shoppe, which he enjoyed for several years.

In his younger years, on a Saturday morning, you would find him on a boat fishing with Don. As his children grew up, when they heard the "pinky whistle" they knew it was a warning to get their act together. He gained another nickname "Poppy" when he was called that one day and responded with "don't call me a flower!", so the name stuck.

His granddaughter, Amber, as an adult when given advice, liked to respond with "I'm grown, I do what I want," so when Terry had a health issue and advice was offered, he started using the same phrase and it is now our family motto. He will be greatly missed by his family and friends.

Terry is preceded in death by his parents; brother, J.D. Kendrick; sister, Shirley Smith; and grandson, Tristan Kendrick. He is survived by his wife, Carolyn Kendrick; son, Terry (Jessica) Kendrick II of Hoxie, AR; daughters: Teresa (Brad) Brooks of Amsterdam, MO; and Pam (Kevin) Medcalf of Drexel, MO; sister, Claudine (Glen) Hess of Adrian, MO; and grandchildren: Baylee Kendrick, Amber Kendrick, Blake Medcalf, Kayla Blakemore, Taylor Brooks, Brittany Hoover, Roger Foster, Stephanie and A.N.G.E.L.; and several great grandchildren!

MoDOT News Release: Winter season moving out; pothole season moves in

Winter season moving out; pothole season moves in

Watch for MoDOT crews making repairs

JEFFERSON CITY – Missouri Department of Transportation crews are already focusing on pothole repairs to keep roads as safe as possible and will continue through the spring as weather allows. When you see a MoDOT crew making repairs, motorists should slow down and move over a lane to give them room to work safely – remember, it’s the law.

“Between the drastic changes in temperatures throughout this winter season and the moisture from precipitation, we’re already seeing a high number of potholes developing on Missouri highways,” said Natalie Roark, MoDOT state maintenance director. “We ask motorists to please be patient with us and look out for our crews as they work to repair the roadways. Slow down and never drive distracted. Remember, Buckle Up Phone Down.”

MoDOT maintains 34,000 miles of road, including interstates, U.S. and Missouri routes, and lettered routes. In 2022, MoDOT patched more than 800,000 potholes, spending more than $16 million on pothole patching.

Potholes form when temperatures warm up during the day but continue to be cold at night. The rain and snow leave moisture that seeps into cracks and joints in the pavement. Frozen water in cracks and under the surface of the roadway causes pavement to bulge and bend. Then when ice melts, the pavement contracts and leaves gaps or voids in the surface under the pavement. When vehicles drive over the bulging pavement, it weakens the roadway, eventually causing chunks of pavement or asphalt to pop out, creating potholes.

Motorists can report the location of potholes on state-maintained roads using the following tools:

· Call the 24/7 Customer Service Center at 1-888-ASK-MODOT (275-6636).

· Use the Report a Road Concern form at www.modot.org/report-road-concern.

Potholes on local streets and subdivisions should be reported to local city or county maintenance departments.

Mild weather today and Wednesday

Quiet and mild weather today and tomorrow with temperatures in the 50s and 60s. Rain chances increase Thursday with a changeover to snow overnight. Some accumulation possible by Friday morning.

Adrian School was on lockdown today

Today at approximately 12pm the Bates County Sheriff’s Office was contacted by another county in reference to two wanted subjects that was reportedly in the Adrian area.

That county developed information that the wanted subjects were in the immediate area of the Adrian School. The wanted subjects we reportedly suicidal and had made threats to law enforcement stating they would force law enforcement into a “suicide by cop” scenario.

It was determined by law enforcement administration to place the Adrian School into a lockdown situation. Law enforcement from Bates county Sheriffs Office, Adrian PD and the Missouri State Highway Patrol flooded the immediate area around the school. Extra deputies were called in to assist until either the subjects were in custody or additional information was received regarding a better location of the subjects.

For the next two hours investigators and Communications Officers from Bates County worked with the other county to continue to share information on the potential location of the subjects.

At approximately 1:30pm it was determined that those two subjects were not in the Adrian vicinity but potentially three counties away. Law enforcement command met and agreed that it was prudent to release the Adrian School from its lockdown.

No further information regarding the two wanted subjects will be released as it’s an ongoing investigation for the other agency and may interfere with their ability to located and apprehend the subjects in a safe manner.

It is with great sorrow and gratitude, the Lee, Gregory, and Pelton families announce the passing of our kind, funny, caring, and unimaginably generous wife, mother, grandmother, sister, and friend, Joann Pelton Lee Gregory.

Joann was born on January 16, 1939 to Albert and Ethel (Louise) Pelton in Galesburg, Illinois. She was the oldest of five children and was born at home, while her twin sister, Jeanette, waited to arrive at the hospital.

As a child she grew up in the Drexel Community, graduated from Drexel High School, and her roots would keep that community near and dear to her heart throughout her life.

After graduation Joann worked in Kansas City as a Harvey Girl. She married Lewis Lee and to this union 4 children. Debra, Mark, and like Joann, twins, Rickey and Randy Lee were born. This union would end in divorce.

Joann would go on to marry the love of her life, Kellis Gregory on July 18, 1986, This marriage gifted Joann with Kellis's three children, Marty, Kelly, and Connie. Joann and Kellis very successfully blended two families.

As family was very important to both, there was always some type of family gathering and Joann was famous for her easter baskets, Christmas stockings, pumpkin bread, homemade rolls, cakes, and pies.

She loved to sew, crafts, flowers in her yard, fishing, the lake, visiting with family and friends, and cooking. She had many jobs over the years, many involved cooking. One of her last jobs was working at her daughter's convenience store (Texaco station), for 9 years, near LaCygne, that allowed her to reconnect with many old friends and create many new friendships.

Many memories were made, and experiences occurred, such as the baby born at pump 6 in September of 2000, the drug bust with guns pulled in the back lot, meeting Gary Lezak, and other celebrities, and the morning coffee drinkers. To say that her family and friends will miss her greatly is an understatement.

She was preceded in death by her father Albert, mother Louise, brother Ivan, brother Butch, niece Dianna, great grandson Mason Gregory.

Survivors include husband Kellis, daughter Debbie (Jr) May, sons Mark Lee, Randy Lee Rickey (Sandy) Lee, Marty (Jami) Gregory, Kelly (Jeff) Sims, Connie (Steve) Koken, seventeen grandchildren, 25 great grandchildren, and a host of nieces and nephews, sisters Caroline Showalter, and Jeanette Bartles.
