Tough day for Blackhawks football with loss to West Platte

The Blackhawks fell today 34-7 to West Platte in Class 1 quarterfinal action, leaving Adrian to end the season 8-4.

Archie beats Lockwood in action this afternoon

The Archie Whirlwinds took down the Lockwood Tigers this afternoon with a final as seen here, 62-58 in 8 man State Tournament action. Congratulations!

Sunshine should be peeking through this weekend

Watch out for PATCHY FOG Saturday morning, especially in Missouri between highways 65 and 63.

Then the sunshine should break through the departing clouds for the rest of the weekend.
I'll be jumping on the livestreams over the weekend tracking in the next rain system on Sunday night / Monday.
Still think the holiday and holiday weekend are cool, but dry. (It will snow up north in the midwest though, according to this afternoon's data!)
Have a great weekend!

New Hertzog retail and processing location coming to fruition

Mid America Live was afforded a sneak peek inside the new Hertzog Meat Company location under construction on west 52 highway in Butler which is slated to be open for business beginning the first of February, 2026.

The former Walmart building is in the process of a complete makeover that will leave no visible traces of its beginnings; and in short order, provide a one-of-a-kind experience for all who visit. When entering, customers will find a friendly, ergonomic layout displaying hundreds of choices of beef and chicken, as well as other favorites such as lobster tails, frog legs, cheese, deli meats and more in a somewhat rustic, family friendly environment.

Beyond the retail section however, lies a refined, high tech processing and packaging area that will use state-of-the-art equipment insuring safety and satisfaction not only for retail customers, but wholesale customers as well; Hertzog Meat Company currently supplies a variety of meats to popular restaurants, the number of which is expected to double in coming months.

The specially engineered facility will allow for these wholesale buyers to experience, hence 'taste test' if you will, new cuts and recipes on site. Hertzog offers additional services including special cuts and marinates- all of which can be 'taste tuned' in the kitchen with buyers present. Most importantly, Hertzog will work with  customers to provide the lowest plate cost (a restaurant term) while insuring the best possible quality.

By all appearances, your visit to Hertzog Meat Company will certainly provide a very unique experience while offering the very best in local meats and more, at prices that will fit your budget.

Updates to be provided; and in the meantime, be ready for a Grand Opening announcement in coming months.

Photo highlights:

Above, the entrance to the retail center is nearing completion with signage coming soon.

A specially designed conference room (above) will also serve as a training area for wholesale buyers as well as access to a carefully designed test kitchen that will insure that all products, whether retail or wholesale, exceed customer expectations.

A special passageway (above) from the huge cooler (below) will allow for immediate transfer of products to the test kitchen and retail section of the facility, thus streamlining operations overall.

Jim Hertzog is proud to say that this incredible undertaking includes the use of many local vendors for HVAC, electricians, plumbers and others who are doing an excellent job of keeping the project on track.

Above and below, artist renderings of what will greet customers when they visit the new Hertzog Meat Company retail center on west 52 highway in Butler beginning in early February.

Missouri Agribusiness Academy Application Opens

The 2026 class will visit St. Louis for an in-depth look at careers in agriculture.

(JEFFERSON CITY, Mo.) – The Missouri Department of Agriculture is offering 30 high school students representing 4-H clubs, FFA chapters and farm families throughout Missouri the opportunity to explore careers in agriculture through the 2026 Missouri Agribusiness Academy (MAbA). MAbA is a competitive program for sophomores interested in pursuing agriculture-related degrees and careers.

“For nearly 40 years the Missouri Department of Agriculture has connected students to career opportunities across the entire agriculture industry,” said Director of Agriculture Chris Chinn. “We are excited in 2026 to introduce students to many opportunities in the St. Louis region. Appropriately called the Plant Science Corridor, St. Louis is a powerhouse for agriculture technology and innovation.”

The students selected will participate in a yearlong program to learn about agriculture career opportunities, tour agribusinesses in the St. Louis area, visit the Missouri State Fair and learn more about the agriculture industry in Jefferson City. The 2026 schedule will include visits with industry and agribusiness leaders, as well as tours of their facilities.

Since 1988, the Missouri Agribusiness Academy has graduated 1,140 students through a competitive application and interview process. The first portion of the 2026 MAbA program will be held June 1-5 and marks the program’s 39th year. Students interested in participating must apply by Jan. 15, 2026.

Equine Herpesvirus Type 1 Outbreak in Nearby States

Horses at recent events in Texas and Oklahoma should be closely monitored.

(JEFFERSON CITY, Mo.) – Multiple cases of Equine Herpes Myeloencephalopathy (EHM), the neurologic form of Equine Herpesvirus Type 1 (EVH-1), have been confirmed in Texas and Oklahoma following equine events in these states. Currently, there are no confirmed cases in Missouri.

The first cases were confirmed in horses that attended an equine event in Waco, Tx., Nov. 5 - 9. Two additional cases were confirmed in horses that attended a barrel racing event in Guthrie, Ok., earlier this week. Owners of horses at either event should consult with their veterinarian as well as isolate and quarantine the horses for at least 14 days.

“Missouri owners or trainers of horses at either of these events should closely monitor their horses for at least 14 days from last exposure, monitor temperature twice daily and isolate them from other horses” said Missouri State Veterinarian Dr. Steve Strubberg. “EHV-1 is highly contagious in equine and can spread very quickly.”

EHV-1 is spread directly through nose-to-nose contact and infected animals can release particles when they cough or sneeze. Indirect transmission is also possible through shared water or feed buckets, tack and travel in the same trailer.

Horse owners should increase biosecurity measures and monitor their horses for symptoms, including fever, nasal discharge and cough, stumbling, hind end weakness or any neurological issues. If you notice any symptoms, contact your veterinarian immediately. Cases that show neurological issues are considered a medical emergency.

There is no risk to humans from EVH-1 or EHM.

For more information about Equine Herpesvirus Type 1, visit the USDA equine herpesvirus website.

For more information about the Missouri Department of Agriculture, visit the Department online at Agriculture.Mo.Gov.
