Correction regarding courthouse holiday schedule...

All county offices will be open Friday, December 31, until 4:30--not just the treasurer/collector as we previously stated.  State offices will be closed on the 31st.  All county offices will be closed Monday, January 3, and all state offices will be open that Monday.

The county offices decided that for the convenience of the county they needed to be open the last day of the year and decided to take the New Year holiday on Monday instead.

Our apologies for any confusion regarding this schedule!

Local forecast

Partly sunny in the morning then clearing. Areas of fog in the morning. Highs in the upper 30s. South winds 5 to 10 mph.

House fire near Adrian this afternoon

Adrian, Butler and Central Cass fire departments were called to the Shipley residence northeast of Adrian this afternoon just before 2 p.m. on a report of a fire near a stove pipe. Upon arrival, fightfighters found  fire in attic at the rear of the home and heavy smoke coming from the attic vents. The fire was quickly extinguished; there is moderate to heavy damage to the home. No injuries were reported.

Courthouse holiday schedule reminder...

The office of Jim Platt, Collector/Treasurer will be open until 4:30 p.m. on December 31st so taxes may be paid without late penalties. Note that all offices in the courthouse will be open on the 31st until 4:30 p.m.; they will be closed on Monday January 3rd.

Authorities called to search for woman overnight

Just before 3:00 a.m. this morning a call went out to local firefighters and police that a woman was about to give birth in the parking lot of a church, near railroad tracks, somewhere in Bates County. It was soon becoming obvious that the woman was traveling and unsure of her location, as Adrian, Amsterdam and Central Cass Fire Departments canvassed the area along with the Bates County Sheriff's Department.

The woman was not located; it was later revealed that the call originally came out of Johnson County Ks., and the caller (possibly family) thought the woman might have been traveling through Bates County at the time.

Today
Cloudy. A few flurries in the morning. Highs in the upper 20s. Northeast winds 5 to 10 mph.
Tonight
Partly cloudy. Lows around 15. East winds around 5 mph.
