Obituary - Ronald Padley

Funeral services for Ronald Padley will be 10 a.m. Saturday, January 15, 2011 at Schowengerdt Funeral Chapel (660-679-6555) in Butler, Missouri with Dr. Terry Davis and Pastor Ron Dunlap officiating. Visitation will be 5-7 p.m. Friday, January 14 at Schowengerdt Chapel. Burial in Oak Hill Cemetery, Butler, Missouri. Contributions to Butler First Baptist Church.

Ronald John Padley, age 82 of Butler, Missouri died Tuesday, January 11, 2011 at Overland Park Regional Medical Center in Overland Park, Kansas. He was born May 10, 1928 to Elbert J. and Mary Leslie Wilson Padley at the Padley farm southeast of Butler.

Ron is survived by his wife of 65 years, Ruby Padley of Butler, Missouri; one son, Dr. Richard A. Padley and wife Joy of Leawood, Kansas; a daughter, Rhonda Russell and husband Ed of Raymore, Missouri; one sister, Naomi Long of Peculiar, Missouri; five granddaughters, Gayle Popkey and husband Justin, Robin Colburn and husband Weston, Julie Newkirk and husband Ron, Janet Ruddy and husband Mark and Drew Elizabeth Padley; and nine great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents; and two sisters, Helen Padley and Edna Taylor.

Fire call in Butler

2:10 p.m.  Authorities are responding to the report of a possible fire at 804 S. High street in Butler. Initial reports are that the house is filling with smoke; Butler and Adrian Fire Departments are in route at this time.


2:21 p.m. Update - fire not found, possible electrical issue. Adrian Fire Department dismissed and placed back into service.

Scholarships for students seeking agriculture degrees

Monsanto and the National Association of Farm Broadcasters (NAFB) are proud to announce an open call for applications for the 2011 Commitment to Agriculture Scholarship Program.

High school seniors pursuing careers in agriculture are eligible to apply for a $1,500 Commitment to Agriculture Scholarship award. To ensure the future of American agriculture, these scholarships help provide financial assistance to students based on their academic achievement and leadership skills. First established in 1999, the program has awarded nearly $1.6 million in scholarships.

To qualify, high school seniors must come from a farming family, plan to enroll as a full-time student in an agriculture-related program from an accredited school, and commit to pursuing a career in agriculture. Applicants are evaluated on their academic record, leadership abilities, extracurricular activities and personal essays submitted as a part of the application process. FFA membership is not required to be eligible for the scholarship program.

“The NAFB is proud to join Monsanto in helping further educational opportunities for the students of America’s farms and ranches in anticipation of their eventual leadership roles in the future.

Miami school board election info

There are three seats available on the Miami R-1 school board  which are currently held by Alan Nieder, Mary Limpus and Vicki Popplewell. Those who have filed to run as of today are Alan Nieder, Mary Limpus, Chris Cumpton and Aaron Muller.

Obituary - Gene Richards

Funeral services for Gene Richards will be 10 a.m. Friday, January 14, 2011 at Schowengerdt Funeral Chapel (660-679-6555) in Butler, Missouri. Visitation will be Thursday evening from 6-8 p.m. at Schowengerdt Chapel. Burial in Garden of Memories in Pittsburg, Kansas. Contributions to National Spasmodic Torticollis Association (NSTA).

Eugene "Gene" Richards, age 85 of Butler, Missouri died Monday, January 10, 2011 at Bates County Memorial Hospital in Butler. He was born July 29, 1925 to James Thomas and Lucille Bryan Richards in Pittsburg, Kansas.

Gene is survived by his wife, Betty Richards of Butler, Missouri; four daughters, Jackie Austin and husband David of Lewisville, Texas, Patti George of Buckner, Missouri, Nancy Petty and husband Jerry of Wheatland, Missouri and Karen Hastings and husband Rob of Adrian, Missouri; six grandchildren, Jeff Hurd, Kelli Heckadon and husband Perry, Jennifer Hawkins, Karli Searcy and husband Chad, Grant Austin and Bryan Hastings and fiance` Tiffany; and 12 great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents; and an infant sister, Nadine.

Obituary - John Mills

John R. Mills, age 97, Clinton, Missouri, formerly of Butler, Missouri, passed away peacefully in his sleep Tuesday, January 11, 2011 at the home of his son, David. John was born near Mayesburg, Missouri in the Northeast part of Bates County. He moved to Butler with his family in 1925 where he married Mary Isabelle Lester in January of 1940 and raised four sons. He has resided in Clinton for the past four years. Visitation will be Friday, January 14, 2011 at the Vansant-Mills Chapel from 7:00-8:30 pm. Family will also receive friends from 12:30-2:00 pm Saturday, January 15, 2011 at the Butler Christian Church, Butler, Missouri with services to follow at 2:00 pm. Burial will be in the Oak Hill Cemetery, Butler. Family suggests memorials to the Boy Scout Troop 237 renovation project which may be left in the care of Vansant-Mills Funeral Home, 314 West Jefferson St, Clinton, Missouri. John was the longest active member of the Butler Christian Church, joining March 31, 1942. During World War II, he served in the United States Navy from 1944-1946 at the Fleet Post Office in San Francisco, California. He served as Mayor of Butler from 1986 to 1990, was a member of the Butler Rotary Club, a Paul Harris Fellow, served on the Senior Citizen’s Taxi committee, and served as president of the Oak Hill Cemetery Association. He also was Scoutmaster for Boy Scout Troop 237 and made 14 yearly trips to Osceola Scout Camp with this troop. In 1967 he was bestowed the highest volunteer honor of Boy Scouting, the Silver Beaver. He worked for the United States Postal Service for thirty three years starting as a foot route carrier and working his way to Assistant Postmaster.
He is preceded in death by his parents, Joseph Riley and Eula M. Stayton Mills, his wife, Mary Isabelle Mills, and one brother, Robert Leroy Mills.

He is survived by four sons, Fred Mills and wife Sylvia of San Antonio, Texas, David Mills and wife Deb of Clinton, Missouri, Randy Mills and wife Dana of Broken Arrow, Oklahoma, and Mark Mills and wife Janet of Columbia, Missouri, one sister in law, Celestine Mills of Prescott, Kansas, thirteen grandchildren, Jeff and wife Nicole Mills of Marietta, Georgia, Kevin and wife Shannon of San Antonio, Texas, Damon and wife Gabrielle of San Antonio, Texas, Mary Mills, Curtis Mills, Chris Mills all of Clinton, Missouri, Carey Mills of Blue Springs, Missouri, Crystal and husband Trevor Neese of North Platte, Nebraska, Jon and wife Marianne of Enid, Oklahoma, Valerie and husband Eric Dale of Broken Arrow, Oklahoma, Meredith and husband Greg Sampson of Broken Arrow, Oklahoma, Jade and husband Greg Mooney of Fulton, Missouri and Jordan Mills of Columbia, Missouri, and twenty one great grandchildren.
