Local 4-H members show horse sense at state-wide contest


Nearly 180 Missouri youths were all business as they evaluated nine classes of horses at the 2011 State 4-H Horse Judging contest, March 19, on the University of Missouri campus.  Bates County 4-H’ers Reba Colin, Clay Cumpton, Clint Cumpton, Kirstyn Eckhoff, James Fischer, and Taylor Fischer placed 2nd overall out of twenty-four teams in the Junior Division Team Judging.  In the Junior Individual Division, Taylor Fischer placed 4th; Reba Colin, 6th; James Fischer, 17th; Clint Cumpton, 23rd; Kirstyn Eckhoff, 27th; and Clay Cumpton, 67th out of a field of 85.  In the Senior Division, Daisy Miller finished 23rd out of 68 contestants.
"4-H members have been practicing their horse judging skills in preparation for the contest but it's more than just a judging competition," according to Ben Gallup, State 4-H youth development specialist. “Public speaking, critical thinking and decision making are all transferable skills gleaned from participation.  We call them life skills, but honestly the kids are here because they love horses," he added.
Alan J. Mundey, Bates County 4-H Youth Specialist, stated that in the contest, the young people compared four horses in each class based on desirable breed traits and ranked the animals from most to least desirable. They also explained their rankings to the judges.  Mundey would like to thank 4-H volunteers Jimmie Franklin and Cody Franklin for coaching the Junior horse judging team.

Car show postponed until April 3

The Show of Wheels Car Show for this Sunday has been postponed until April 3rd. Here is information regarding the show:


Car buffs Dale and Jeff Douty are proud to present a fundraiser car show on March 27th to help raise money for the All District Choir's upcoming trip to New York. The choir, made up of four Adrian and four Butler students will have the honor of performing at a Philharmonic Orchestra concert while in New York.

The Douty's annual Show of Wheelscar show has traditionally been a free show- but this year will be held as a fundraiser to help the choir with travel and accommodation costs.

The show will be held in the large lot adjacent to Gray's Cafe on Business 71 in Butler.

Registration begins at noon on the 3rd, with a $10 entry fee on each vehicle.  Trophies will be awarded for best race car, drag car, truck, tractor, muscle car, rat rod, street rod, motorcycle, best in show and kids choice.

Tax holiday coming for energy saving appliances


Need a new appliance? Hang on a few more weeks and you'll enjoy the benefit of saving a little money on your next purchase. The Show Me Green sales tax holiday is set for the week of April 19th through the 25th. Items that qualify in include clothes washers, water heaters, dishwashers, air conditioners, furnaces, refrigerators and freezers.

Obituary - Raymond Moise

Raymond H. Moise, 77, of Butler, MO, passed away March 20, 2011. Ray was born Aug. 4, 1933, in Kansas City, MO, the son of Lafayette A. Moise and Lela Ophelia Fuller Moise. He served in the U.S. Navy as an Airman Electronics Technician from 1955 to 1959. He was a life member of the Disabled American Veterans and the Liberty American Legion. He was a retired wire drawer for Union Wire Rope/Armco Steel. Ray was a member of East Gate Masonic Lodge, York Rite Bodies, Ararat Shrine Temple, and the Bates County Shrine Club. He was also active in scouting and was a member of the Tribe of Mic-O-Say. Along with his parents, Ray was preceded in death by his sister, Edith and wife, Patricia. Survivors include his children, Kim I. Eckert, Raymond Moise II (Brandi), Aaron Kelly Moise (Jerri) and Patrick Moise; 11 grandchildren; his companion, Pat Allen; as well as a host of other family and friends. 

Visitation will be held from 6 to 8 p.m. with a Mic-O- Say service at 7 p.m. Thursday, March 24, at the Park Lawn Funeral Chapel, 8251 Hillcrest Road, Kansas City, MO. Masonic services will be held at 11 a.m. Friday, March 25, at the Park Lawn Chapel. Graveside services with military honors will be held at 1 p.m. Friday, in the Orient Cemetery, Harrisonville, MO. Memorial contributions are suggested to Boy Scouts of America, Heart of America Council. Arrangements: Park Lawn Funeral Home, (816) 523-1234.

Obituary - Alice Crosslen

Alice's wishes were to be cremated and remembered with fond memories. There will be a private family gathering at a later date. Services are under the direction of the Schowengerdt Funeral Chapel (660-679-6555) of Butler, Missouri.

Alice Claudine Crosslen, age 92 of Butler, Missouri died Sunday, March 20, 2011 at the Rehabilitation Center of Raymore in Raymore, Missouri. She was born September 22, 1918 to A.V. and Ollie Kelley Shirk in Webb City, Missouri.

Alice is survived by her daughter, Verna Elleman and husband Donald of Raymore, Missouri; daughter-in-law, Kathy Park of Independence, Missouri; six grandchildren; eleven great-grandchildren; and two brothers and three sisters. She was preceded in death by her parents; son Garry Park; her children's father Leonard Park; her second husband, Lyle Crosslen; and two sisters

Fire at Adrian elevator

About 5:45 p.m. this evening, the Adrian Fire Department was dispatched on a report of smoke coming from the abandoned Adrian elevator located on 5th street, just West of the railroad tracks. Upon arrival, firefighters found a truck inside the elevator was on fire. The fire was contained to the cab portion of the truck and quickly extinguished.

More information will be made available as the investigation continues.
