Rollover accident on V Highway

Get ready for a noisy Spring...

(Missouri) -- In a matter of weeks, Missouri will see a major emergence of cicadas. That's the word from the Missouri Department of Conservation.

It says by early May, the 13-year cicadas will emerge from hibernation much earlier than their "dog-day" cicada counterparts that typically arrive in late summer.

The department says the periodical cicadas spend 13 years in the ground feeding on sap from tree roots before emerging en masse.

The 13-year cicada is much smaller, but noticeably louder. They'll gather in trees over a single acre chanting their mating calls.

They have dark bodies and reddish eyes.

The last time the Show-Me State saw the 13-year cicadas was in 1998 -- a particularly large brood.

This go-round, they're expected to cover most of the state. The department says the Bootheel and parts of northwest Missouri will escape them.

The noise will likely be gone by June.

Funeral services for Harriett Frances Booth of Butler, Missouri will be 10 a.m. Wednesday, April 27, 2011 at the Schowengerdt Funeral Chapel (660-679-6555) in Butler with Rev. Art Ellsworth officiating. Visitation prior to services from 9 - 10 a.m. Wednesday, April 27 at the Schowengerdt Chapel. Burial at 3 p.m. Wednesday, April 27 at Resthaven Cemetery in Chillicothe, Missouri. Contributions, Ohio St. United Methodist Church or the Butler Public Library.

Harriett Frances Booth, age 87 of Butler, Missouri died Saturday, April 23, 2011 at Bates County Memorial Hospital in Butler. She was born June 23, 1923 to William Harvey and Maude Lewis Craig Crawley in Davis City, Iowa.

Harriett owned and operated a Day Care and took care of children for over 42 years.

Harriett is survived by a daughter, Sharon McLain and husband Neil of Butler, Missouri; two sons, Gary Booth and wife Nancy of Joplin, Missouri and Rick Booth and wife Lola of California, Missouri; 6 grandchildren; and 12 great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her husband, Doyle Booth; two brothers, Samuel and Russel; and a nephew, Larry Crawley.

Bates County Community Health Foundation hosting 7th annual golf tournament in June

Saturday, June 11th marks the date for the 7th annual Bates County Community Health Foundation golf tournament at the Butler Country Club. The shotgun start, four man scramble starts at 8 a.m. with check in time at 7:30.

Sponsors are needed- $100 per hole which includes a sign with your or company name at the hole. The sponsorship price also covers participation for your four man team.

The Bates County Community Health Foundation has awarded $1,000 scholarships for the last five years to those pursuing a career in nursing or are working towards a higher level in the nursing field.

1st place team will be awarded $400, 2nd - $300 and third place pays $200, with a $10,000 hole-in-one contest. There will also be prizes for closest to the pin and longest drive.

Accident on 71 Highway results in minor injuries

Travis T. Williams, 34, of Peculiar received minor injuries last night in a single car accident on Northbound 71 Highway just South of the Miami Creek bridge. Williams was driving a 1992 Ford that traveled off the roadway, struck an embankment and sign, then came to a rest in the median. He was transported to Bates County Memorial Hospital for treatment.

Highlights from Ozark Shores Rentals grand opening today

Grand opening of Butler's newest business was held today- Ozark Shores Rentals, located in the former Movie Gallery location next to McDonald's. Brothers/owners Robert and Bill Mullally were on hand to greet those who came to see the Blues Brothers, have a hot dog and take a look around the new store.

Store manager John Koch was also busy with those who came to see the offerings of Ozark Shores Rentals- furniture, washers, dryers, televisions, beds, interior decor items, refrigerators, dishwashers and more.

The Mullally brothers purchased their first store in Clinton, which was already established for over 20 years. Since then they have opened stores in Warsaw, Bolivar and now Butler. The Mullally's are members of the Missouri Rental Dealers Association and are looking forward to opening at least three more stores spanning Missouri and Kansas within the next six months.
