Obituary - Garland Morrison

Garland Morrison, 87, Drexel, Missouri died Friday, September 2, 2011 at Beautiful Savior Home in Belton, Missouri. Funeral services will be 2:00pm Wednesday, September 7, 2011 at the Atkinson Chapel in Harrisonville, Missouri. The family will receive friends 1:00-2:00pm Wednesday at the chapel. Burial in Freeman Cemetery, Freeman, Missouri. Contributions to the American Cancer Society.

Garland was born June 23, 1924 in Lisle, Missouri, a son of Louis and Clara Evelyn (Tribby) Morrison. He grew up in the Lisle Community, attended the Calvert Rural School and graduated from Drexel High School. Garland was inducted into the Army in 1944 and received wounds while in action during the Asiatic Pacific Campaign in April of 1945. He spent ten months recovering in a military hospital and was discharged in February 1946. He was united in marriage to Maxine McBride on December 31, 1945 in Paola, Kansas. They moved to Kansas City in 1946, where Garland started working as a stock clerk for the Montgomery Ward Warehouse. He worked for Montgomery Ward 38 1/2 years before retiring in 1985. They moved back to the Drexel area in 1993. Garland was a member of VFW Post 302 in Kansas City and a member of the South Fork Baptist Church in Drexel.

Garland was preceded in death by his parents, his grandmother, Sallie Morrison, who raised him after the death of his parents, and his aunt Edith Schmoll. He is survived by his wife, Maxine Darr, of the home; a daughter, Cheryl Dyer, and her husband Jack, Raytown, Missouri; cousins, Evelyn Livingston, Marilyn Walters, and Morris Schmoll, other relatives and friends.

Labor Day- more than just a holiday weekend


Labor Day, the first Monday in September, is a creation of the labor movement and is dedicated to the social and economic achievements of American workers. It constitutes a yearly national tribute to the contributions workers have made to the strength, prosperity, and well-being of our country.

Aviation Day coming to the Butler airport

Lots of excitement at the Butler Airport on Saturday Sept. 17th as it will be 'Aviation Day' from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. There will be demonstration flights, R/C airplanes, skydiving demos, static displays, a powered parachute and lots of specialty aircraft to see. 

Demo skydiving jumps will take place between 11 a.m. and 2 p.m.

Obituary - Ruby Johnson

Ruby Coraetta Johnson, 88, Montrose, MO, died Thursday, September 1, 2011 at Bates County Memorial Hospital in Butler, MO. Funeral services will be held at 10:00 a.m. Tuesday, September 6, 2011 at the Atkinson Chapel in Adrian, MO. Friends may call from 6:00-8:00 p.m. Monday, September 5 at the chapel. Burial will be in Oak Hill Cemetery in Butler, MO. Memorial contributions may be made to charity of choice.

Ruby was born August 26, 1923 in Bates County, MO, the daughter of Charles and Eva (O’dea) Carroll. She worked as an operator for AT&T for 26 years before retiring. She was a member of Walnut Grove Presbyterian Church in Ballard, MO and was baptized at an early age. She loved to bowl, quilting, playing cards, mowing her own yard and reading.

Ruby was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, Floyd Johnson and one brother. She is survived by two brothers, Charles Carroll and his wife, Louise, Butler, MO and Thomas Carroll and his wife, Dora, Appleton City, MO; and four sisters, Lina Lou Allen, Marjorie Craig, Jessie Paxton and Wanda Wainscott and her husband, Ross, all of Butler, MO.

Obituary - Joseph Lewis

Joseph Raymore “Joe” Lewis, 71 of Bakersfield, Ca., passed away August 19, 2011 in Bakersfield.

Joe was born November 16, 1939 in Bates County, Mo., son of John Russell and Leta (Walley) Lewis. He grew up in Amsterdam and married Lois Stark on April 6, 1959. While living in Missouri, three children were born to this union. Joe and Lois left for California in 1962, after which time their fourth child was born. Joe and Lois owned and operated Joe’s Auto Parts in Oildale, Ca. until Lois’s death in 1998 and Joe’s retirement in 2001. He found love again with Christy Lynn Jackson for the past 12 years.

Joe was preceded in death by his parents, his wife Lois, son John Russell “Rusty”; sisters Betty (Sis) Lacy, Peggy Lou Lewis, Jane Dykman; brothers Wilford (Brother) Lewis, and Richard Lewis; and a special uncle, Dowane Walley.

Joe is survived by friend Christy Jackson; one son, Rodney Joe of Bakersfield, Ca.; daughters, Jaleen Annette and husband James Thornton of Hot Springs, Ark., and Robin Lynn and husband Marcus Roy Valdes of Bakersfield, Ca.; daughter-in-law Nancy P. Lewis; brother Tom Lewis and wife Dee of Arroyo Grande, Ca., sisters Alice Pitts of Dalzell, S.C., Missie Good of Amsterdam, Mo., and Deana Kay Vermillion and husband Floyd of Grove, Okla., and special aunt, Wilma Walley of Amsterdam, Mo. Also surviving are nine grandchildren and four great-grandchildren with another on the way. He is also survived by nieces, nephews and cousins.

Graveside memorial services will be at 4:00 PM Saturday, September 10, 2011 in West Point Cemetery, Amsterdam, with Greg Mullinax presiding. Memorial contributions in memory of Joe are suggested to American Cancer Society, and may be left in care of the funeral home.
