City of Butler to be flushing fire hydrants

The City of Butler will be flushing hydrants in all areas North of Ohio Street starting October 19th and 20st, 2011, and October 26th and 27th, 2011.

Flushing hydrants is a routine maintenance activity of the Water Distribution Department and Fire Department. This work will occur mainly during the late evening and overnight hours for the convenience of our customers and will be primarily Wednesdays and Thursdays. This work should take approximately two weeks.

The residents in this area may experience some rusty water and should exercise caution when washing white fabrics. If you notice any staining of white fabrics, do not dry the material but repeat the wash cycle. If you experience stained fabrics, contact the City office at 679-4182 during normal business hours or the Butler Police Department at 679-6131 after hours and on weekends and we can provide you with bottles of stain remover.

Busy weekend for local fire departments

If you heard sirens this weekend, chances are it was your local fire department in route to one the many calls that went out:

Drexel Fire responded to a rollover accident yesterday about two miles east of town that sent two to Kansas City hospitals with critical injuries.

Butler Fire/Rescue responded to the scene of a rollover at 52 and K highway that injured on person.

Today, grass fires were fought in the Harmony Mission area, another near Foster and one near Virginia that destroyed a farm tractor.

This afternoon, Adrian, Butler and Amsterdam fire departments responded to a report of smoke coming from a house near the Miami School, but nothing was found.

Needless to say, conditions are extremely dry and with a little wind a grass fire can be out of control in no time. Don't forget that burning is currently banned within the city limits of Butler and Adrian. It is highly advisable for those out in the county to avoid burning until we get some moisture, too.

The good news? We have a 70% chance of rain through Monday night, then cooler temps the rest of the week.

Chance of rain tomorrow, but don't hold your breath...

Rest of Today
Partly cloudy. Highs in the mid 70s. Temperatures steady or slowly falling in the afternoon. West winds 10 to 15 mph shifting to the northwest in the afternoon.
Tonight
Partly cloudy in the evening then becoming mostly cloudy. Lows in the upper 40s. Northeast winds 5 to 10 mph.

Tough day for the Drexel Bobcats

Drexel's undefeated record was broken this evening as the Bobcats fell to University Academy 48 to 28. The game originally set for 2 p.m. this afternoon was postponed until 6 p.m. following a rollover accident on "A" Highway this morning that injured two teammates, Trevor Cooley and Chris Moles.

Both are listed in serious condition at Kansas City area hospitals.

Nightmare on Main street continues through Halloween...

If you're prone to worry about monsters under the bed or things that go bump in the night, its all about to get worse...

The Bates County Elks Lodge Nightmare on Main Street haunted house is now open every Friday and Saturday night through Halloween in the scary looking building on the Southeast corner of the Butler square...

Doors open at 7 p.m. and admission is $5.

After getting the bejeebers scared out of you, the best way out is a fast slide down a long, dark corridor. Good luck!

Drexel football game postponed

The Drexel football game previously scheduled for 2 p.m. today at Center High School has been postponed until 6 p.m. this evening.

It could be time to cash in...

The Ohio Valley gold and silver refinery will be in Butler this Monday and Tuesday on the hunt for your unwanted gold, silver, platinum, pre-1970 coins and more. You might also check to see if you have old silver dollars, halves, quarters or dimes- and anything marked "sterling" will net you some cash, too.

Buyers from the company will be on hand from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. both Monday and Tuesday at the Bates County Elks Lodge in Butler. Cash will be paid on the spot based on up to the minute market prices.

For more information, see the full size ad in this week's Xchanger or other local publications.
