The Altona 4-H met on Wednesday, December 14, 2011, at the Altona Community Hall. President, Catie Welliver called the meeting to order at 6:30 pm and led us in the pledges to the American and 4-H flag. Song leader, Kameron Collier played The Big Green Tractor and we sang along. Secretary, Jennifer Willerton called the roll and there were 21 members present. Jennifer also read the minutes from the previous meeting and they were approved as read. We welcomed new member, Henry Oates, to our club. Cameron Tallman gave the treasurer’s report and submitted the bills that had been turned in. A motion was made and approved to accept the treasurer’s report and pay the bills. Old business included recognition of those who participated in the Adrian Christmas parade. We placed 5th and our club received Chamber Bucks as our prize. Todd Frankenfield announced that the final date to make project changes will be January 15th. He also went over the list of projects and signed up new project leaders. No new business. The meeting was adjourned and we worked on our Christmas community service project assembling goody trays to deliver to area friends and neighbors. The next meeting will be held on January 11, 2012.

Beginning Beekeeping Class to be offered at Lamar
This “How to Get Started in Beekeeping” class will be taught by the SW Missouri Beekeepers Association on Saturday, January 14 from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. It will be held at the Wolf Center, 801 E. 12th Street in Lamar, MO. There is a $10 charge to attend to cover the cost of lunch and refreshments. If you need any special accommodations, please let us know at the time of registration. Please call in registrations by January 9 to 417-682-3579. The Strategic Agricultural Initiative of EPA Region VII (Kansas City, KS) helped with financial assistance for this workshop.

Elks present 35 shiny bikes to area children this morning

Some bikes are repaired and painted and some are stored for parts, event the donation of a used bike or a bike that seems beyond repair is useful to the drive.
Periodically during the year, Bates county Elks members will use the media to ask for donations. Members work year round to repair and restore used bicycles to be given them to Bates County children as Christmas draws near.
At this date the bikes have a home through the Toys for Tykes registration and children qualifying were given vouchers to select their bike this morning at the Lodge.
Our very special thank you to those donating their time to make this bicycle distribution possible and to those the donated the used bicycles. This is Just one of the many events sponsored by our Bates County Elks members.

Obituary - Olivan Bundy
Olivan M. Bundy, 90 of Branson, passed away December 19, 2011 in Branson.
Olivan was born April 17, 1921 in Canova, South Dakota, a daughter of Harley Milo and Ina Mae (Mills) Marquis. She attended school in Drexel, Mo., where she graduated in 1939. She then served an apprenticeship under Helen Hinze and after receiving her Beautician’s license, went to work at a beauty shop in Paola, Ks. Olivan later attended the Pittsburg State Teachers College, and after completing 60 college hours she was awarded her Lifetime Teaching Certificate. She taught first at Washington School near Drexel.
Olivan continued to pursue teaching, completing continuing education and substitute teaching when needed. She went on to attend Avila University and CMSU, from where she graduated with a degree in elementary education. During college, she served an internship with Hallmark Cards, as she was a very gifted artist in sketching and painting; (although she will also be remembered for her talent in crochet and knitting!) In her college years she also served as president of the Alpha Sigma Alpha Sorority. She returned to Washington School in the 1960’s, and was later transferred to other buildings in the Louisburg School District.
She was united in marriage to Mr. Thomas Cleveland (“T.C.”) Bundy on March 6, 1943 at the home of Clarence Bundy. T.C. was a farmer northeast of Drexel his entire life, and Olivan was proud of her contribution in keeping the home particularly presentable, allowing her husband’s customers to visit and conduct business there. T.C. was at one time president of the Pastrons and Farmers Mutual Insurance Company of Cass County, and Olivan became president of a State auxiliary group of wives in that company for a time. She was PTA president in Drexel, during which time many good works were accomplished. Olivan was active in the Drexel First Baptist Church, where she served as Superintendant, and was involved in the Sunday School. She also had been active in the Eastern Star in Drexel.
Olivan will be remembered so well as a teacher. Her family remembers that her students truly learned; and became better prepared for their futures. She was very concerned, and took a personal interest in, her many students.
Olivan was preceded in death by her parents; her husband T.C. in 1974; and one sister at the age of 6 months; as well as one son, Bob. She is survived by her children: Anna Lee Lankford of Branson, Mo.; Bill Bundy of Drexel, Mo.; one sister, Venita Westhoff of Drexel; three granddaughters; and two great-grandchildren. She also leaves behind nieces and nephews, numerous cousins, as well as other relatives.
Cremation, with memorial services at 1:30 PM Tuesday, January 10, 2012 at the Mullinax Funeral Home, Drexel Chapel (816) 657-4400. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions are suggested to any charity of the donor’s choice.

Overnight robbery in Adrian
While details have not yet been confirmed, it appears that authorities are in search of suspects in an apparent robbery that took place in Adrian overnight or early this morning. Around 6:30 a.m. the Bates County Sheriff's Department, Adrian Police Department and the Missouri Highway Patrol were seen at the Happy Go Lucky gas station in Adrian and at a location on Eight street apparently looking for at least two subjects involved.
