A gluten-free diet is not a magic bullet for weight loss

It is hard not to notice the increase of gluten-free foods currently available at the grocery store. These foods, available for people with celiac sprue or gluten intolerance, have dramatically increased over the past five to seven years. Interestingly, many people purchasing the foods are not choosing them because they are intolerant; they are choosing them as a weight loss tool.

Gluten is a protein found in wheat, barley and rye. It is responsible for giving bread its spongy texture and makes pizza dough stretchy. It is present in bread, cereal, cookies, cakes and crackers.

The State of Our State

From the desk of Senator David Pearce

After the governor presented his State of the State address this week and unveiled his budget numbers, we in the legislature will need to take on the responsibility of crafting a budget that will best benefit the future of Missouri. There is no denying that Missouri sits at a crossroads. We no longer have the option of relying on federal funds to plug large holes in our state budget. Since we are mandated by the Missouri Constitution to not spend more than we have, the budget creation process is that much more difficult.
