Coach Wackerman’s Comments

“The district tournament, along with the state tournament, is a testament to the overall improvements your wrestlers can make over the course of a season. For some, the journey to this year’s district tournament began the moment they were eliminated last year from the district tournament. We didn’t put as many wrestlers in the championship finals as we would have liked.Regardless, our wrestlers performed well in a crowded, stressful environment at Knob Noster.Tactical matches, following a solid gameplan, wrestling aggressively to score at all times, performing just like you practice…these are the only way you can achieve your goals at this time of year. Good wrestlers make their own breaks at the crucial moments. 6 qualifiers is our highest number of qualifiers for the program since 2008, so we are pleased about a strong group going to state. 4 of our state qualifiers are seniors, so it is especially fortunate that they will get to finish their wrestling careers in the best possible venue- the Missouri state wrestling tournament next weekend. We are on our final mission this week- to bring home state medals.

Decreasing salt can decrease blood pressure

Salt (sodium) is abundant in the American diet. The problem is that sodium can contribute to high blood pressure and high blood pressure can contribute to the risk of developing cardiovascular disease, congestive heart failure and kidney disease. Some people can decrease blood pressure by decreasing sodium intake. It is important to know where sodium lurks in your food and how you can eat less.

According to the American Heart Association, the average American consumes 2,900 to 4,300 milligrams of sodium per day. It is recommended that the average American consumes no more than 2,400 milligrams of sodium per day. For some people the recommendation is even less.

MoDOT issues Winter Travel Advisory

MoDOT Southwest District:
Winter Travel Advisory For Sunday-Monday, Feb. 12-13

Weather: Snow or a mix of snow/sleet is predicted to begin at about 12 a.m. Monday along the western edge of Missouri. The weather system is supposed to move gradually toward the east. Much of the southwest quarter of the state is expected to have snow and/or ice falling by daylight. The storm is expected to continue through the day on Monday.

Road conditions: Roads are expected to become snow or ice covered beginning in the early morning hours of Monday. Below-freezing temperatures Saturday and Sunday will mean the pavement will be cold, causing moisture to freeze. Driving is expected to be difficult during morning rush hour on Monday.

MoDOT's Plan: MoDOT crews are reporting to work late Sunday evening and will be ready to spread salt and plow where necessary as snow and sleet develop. Crews will be on the road throughout the entire region, including state roadways in the Springfield and Joplin metro areas. More trucks are assigned to the busiest roads. However, crews will run lesser-traveled roads and will treat hills, curves and intersections. The MoDOT Emergency Operations Center will open as weather deteriorates and staff will post road conditions on MoDOT's Traveler Information Map at modot.org.

Driving tips: Get up early, check weather reports and visit MoDOT's Traveler Information Map. MoDOT crews will be working to keep roads driveable, but most roads will be covered or mostly covered with snow or ice as long as the precipitation is falling.
Drivers can expect a longer-than-normal commute Monday morning:
* Leave early for work or school.
* Drive slowly and carefully. Be prepared for completely covered roads or at least many slick areas, including bridge floors.
* Leave plenty of following distance behind the vehicle in front of you
* Avoid sudden turns and hard braking so you can keep your vehicle under control in slick conditions.
* Be cautious even in a four-wheel drive vehicle. It can slide off the road as easily as any vehicle.
