Storm spotter training to be held in Vernon County this year

Vernon County is sponsoring the National Weather Service storm spotters school on Feb 23rd and will be held at the 3M clubhouse at 2120 E. Austin at 6:30 PM. The clubhouse is located on the west side of the plant.

Bates County will not be able to have a storm spotters class this year because of budget cuts at the National Weather Service.

Crash sends one to hospital yesterday

A Harrisonville man escaped serious injury when his 1999 Dodge struck a retaining wall and overturned at the Highway 71/East 52 interchange yesterday. Chip L. Farrimond, 42, was northbound on 71 highway when the accident happened around 4:30 p.m. as the vehicle traveled off the right side of the roadway striking the concrete barrier.

Farrimond, who was wearing a seatbelt, was taken to Bates County Memorial Hospital for treatment of minor injuries. Trooper K.A. Schmutzler of the MSHP was assisted at the scene by the Bates County Sheriff's Department and Butler Fire/Rescue personnel.

Deputies work in multi-county effort to bring suspect into custody

Joshua Brown
A vehicle stolen in the northeast part of the county already pointed to a well known suspect and it didn't take long for the Bates County Sheriff's Department long to put the pieces together. Joshua Brown, 30, had just been featured on Kansas City Crime Stoppers and with the latest leads, a multi county manhunt was underway.

Bates County Deputies were already looking for Brown who was involved in a shooting in Urich, where the suspect attempted to run over an officer during a traffic stop and managed to elude authorities in a chase that ended in the northeastern part of our county.

Joshua Brown was wanted on other charges as well, including multiple burglaries, car thefts and pursuits that spanned across some 7 counties.

About  6 p.m. last night Deputies located the stolen truck at a Days Inn hotel in Overland Park KS, and working with the Overland Park Police Department, were waiting to serve a warrant when Brown's girlfriend left the hotel room to retrieve laundry. She was arrested immediately and the team made entry to the room where they arrested Brown without incident.

Brown currently is being held in the Johnson County Detention Center awaiting an extradition hearing and faces charges in multiple counties on multiple charges including probation violation among others. He will be turned over to the Bates County Sheriff's Office sometime in the next week and the department believes this will put the lid on numerous local cases that are now open.

After he's done here, Brown will be extradited to other counties to face even more charges.

"While Brown’s arrest is expected to clear up some open theft cases, the Sheriff’s Office will continue to pursue any additional suspect that has assisted him in committing these crimes against our community. We are will also pursue any subjects that have knowingly assisted Brown in eluding law enforcement by giving him a safe haven to stay" said Sheriff Chad Anderson.

He added "We still have thousands of dollars worth of property that we need to recover that was taken at the hands of Mr. Brown and his associates. We expect more arrest in the future connected to this case and ask that if you have any information regarding Brown or any other crimes you are encouraged to contact the Bates County Sheriff’s Office at 660-679-3232".
