Storm siren testing in Butler today

The City of Butler will conduct the monthly test of the outdoor warning sirens at 10:00 A.M. today, March 7. In the event of threatening weather, the test will be postponed.

No fire found at residence yesterday

On Tue., March 6 at approximately 12:16 P.M., the Butler Fire Department responded to a report of smoke in a residence in the 200 block of W. Ft. Scott.

On arrival, no fire was found and the smoke was due to an electrical problem.

Units were on the scene approximately 45 minutes.

Funeral services for Jim McElwain will be 11 a.m. Saturday, March 10, 2012 at Schowengerdt Funeral Chapel (660-679-6555) in Butler, Missouri. Visitation will be prior to services from 10-11 a.m. at Schowengerdt Chapel. Burial in Oak Hill Cemetery, Butler. Contributions to Charity of Choice.

Jimmy Dale “Jim” McElwain, age 52 of Kansas City, Missouri died Sunday, March 4, 2012 at his home in Kansas City. He was born January 12, 1960 to Marvin Dale and Bonnie Lou Underwood McElwain in Butler, Missouri.

Jim is survived by his father, Marvin Dale McElwain of Lee’s Summit, Missouri; one brother, Danny Taylor McElwain and wife Rebecca of Greenwood, Missouri; and two nephews, Matthew Taylor McElwain and Clinton Daniel McElwain. He was preceded in death by his mother, Bonnie Lou McElwain.

JEFFERSON CITY – Missouri’s State Emergency Management Agency has launched new videos demonstrating tornado sheltering in schools, houses and mobile homes in preparation for severe weather season and the March 13 Statewide Tornado Drill. Obituary - Thelma Gilliam

Funeral services for Thelma Gilliam will be 2 p.m. Saturday, March 10, 2012 at Schowengerdt Funeral Chapel (660-679-6555) in Butler, Missouri with Pastor Ron Dunlap officiating. Visitation will be Friday evening from 5-7 p.m. at Schowengerdt Chapel. Burial in Oak Hill Cemetery, Butler, Missouri. Contributions to Muscular Dystrophy Association or American Heart Association.

Thelma Margaret Gilliam, age 92 of Butler, Missouri died Monday, March 5, 2012 at Willow Lane Nursing Center in Butler. She was born February 3, 1920 to Herbert Lee and Dicie Mae Chitwood Snell in Spruce, Missouri.

Thelma is survived by one son, Joe Gilliam Jr. and companion Mary of Butler, Missouri; one daughter, Elaine Barnhart and husband David of Carthage, Missouri; three grandsons, Michael Barnhart and wife Jennifer of Centerton, Arkansas, Karl Barnhart of Pensacola, Florida and Greg Barnhart of Fayetteville, Arkansas; and three great-grandchildren, Finley, Aidan and Liam. She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Joe; four brothers, Roy, Buford, Joe and Harry; and two sisters, Opal Mullins and Eva McDaniel; and three nephews, Donald, Gilbert and Timothy.

More charges in ongoing drug related investigations

Three more face charges as the Bates County Sheriff's Department continues the crackdown on local drug activity. In a joint investigation with the Butler Police Department last week, three parties were initially arrested while serving a search warrant at 303 E. Atkinson St., and now a fourth person, Dylan Warren, 18, has been charged with delivery of a controlled substance in connection to activity at that residence. He is being held in the Bates County Jail on a $10,000 bond.

Additionally, Candice Danner, 27, and Kevin Danner, 24, face charges stemming from "Operation Weed Killer" in Rich Hill last week. Both have been charged with possession with intent to distribute a controlled substance and each are being held on a $25,000 bond.

Sheriff Anderson has stated that the effort to combat drugs and drug related activity in the county is ongoing. 5th Annual Casino Night March 31st

The 5th Annual Casino night benefit fund raiser will be held for the Bates county Children’s Center in Butler. The night will feature a Social Hour from 6:30 until 7:30 and the Casino will open at 7:30. Tickets are $25.00 in advance and may be purchased at the door the night of the event for $30.00. You must be 21 years of age to attend-the evening will include a live auction, slot machines, Plinko, and Live Mouse races. There will be free food and beverages with the evening menu catered by Butthead BBQ of Adrian.

Tickets to the 5th Annual Casino Night may be purchased from the Bates county Assessment and Treatment Children’s Center located at 413 West Howard Street in Butler, and from the Butler Juvenile Office at the Bates County Courthouse.
