If You Dye Eggs, Keep Them Safe

From Tammy Roberts, Nutrition and Health Education Specialist

The week before Easter 20 million dozen extra eggs are purchased in the United States. If you are going to use these eggs for the hunt and then eat them it is important to follow food safety principles to prevent illness.

“It doesn’t seem possible but hard cooked eggs can spoil faster than fresh eggs” said Tammy Roberts of University of Missouri Extension. Eggs are porous and bacteria can penetrate the shell. When they are washed at the plant a protective coating is added but that protective coating is washed away during boiling. Once again, it becomes easier for bacteria to enter the shell. For this reason it is important to refrigerate hard-cooked eggs within two hours of cooking. This means you’ll need to work quickly to get them dyed.

New web site designed to help keep Missourians safe in bad weather

Missouri StormAware Web site includes videos on sheltering and storm warning systems; stormaware.mo.gov also includes links to severe weather texting services to alert Missourians to severe weather in their area

JEFFERSON CITY – The State Emergency Management Agency today announced Missouri has launched a new Web site to help inform and prepare Missourians for severe weather. Stormaware.mo.gov includes detailed videos on how to take shelter in specific types of buildings, important information about tornado sirens and weather alert radios, and links to severe weather texting services that can alert people across Missouri to upcoming severe weather.

“We think Missouri StormAware will be a valuable tool to educate all Missourians about the steps they can take to help protect themselves from dangerous severe weather,” State Emergency Management Agency Director Paul D. Parmenter said. “We’re providing very specific information about the safest places in different types of buildings, pointing out the limitations of tornado sirens that people should be aware of, and directing Missourians to text messaging systems that provide severe storm warnings.”

County Roads to Remain Open Until Late Summer

Access to Bates County Roads 4016 and 3778 to and from Route 71 north of Rich Hill will remain open until late summer as work progresses on a project to build outer roads between Rich Hill and Butler, the Missouri Department of Transportation said.

Also, property owners along the future outer roads will continue to have access to their property during the outer road construction.

However, for several weeks in late summer, County Roads 4016 and 3778 will be closed at their intersections with Route 71. The temporary closings will enable a contractor to build connections between the two county roads and the new outer roads.
