Butler Chamber presents awards

The Butler Chamber of Commerce held their 2012 Annual Award Banquet on March 22nd. A special “This Is Your Life” presentation was given to Jim and Carol Peters for their contributions to the Chamber.

The Chamber recognized those retiring from the Board – Kelli Schapeler, President and Members Jan Rush and Pam Martin.

Obituary - Jeremy Marshall

Funeral services for Jeremy Marshall will be 10:00 AM Tuesday, March 27, 2012 at the Mullinax Funeral Home in Drexel, Missouri (816) 657-4400 with Rev. Gayla Rapp officiating. Visitation Monday evening, 6-8 PM at the funeral home. Burial, Sharon Cemetery near Drexel. Contributions, to a memorial fund in care of Jeremy’s family. Jeremy Joseph Marshall, 35 of Overland Park, Kansas died March 22, 2012 at his home. Jeremy was born November 1, 1976 in Detroit, Michigan, son of Doyle D. and Diane (Moore) Marshall.

Jeremy graduated from Drexel High School and was a plumber. He played football all through his school years and very much enjoyed watching football throughout his life. His son Doyle was his first priority; he loved spending time with Doyle, especially fishing. Jeremy was protective and loving toward his family, having assumed the role of head of the family after the passing of his father, Doyle, in August of 2002. Jeremy will be remembered as a caring and compassionate person who loved hanging out with his friends.

He was preceded in death by his father. Jeremy is survived by his mother, Diane of Overland Park, Kansas; his son, Doyle; sister Amy Hocker and husband Luke, who was also Jeremy’s best friend, of Shawnee, Kansas; grandparents Helen Moore of Canton, Michigan, Joseph Moore and wife Rita of Texas, Elizabeth Marshall of Raymore, Missouri and William Marshall of Missouri; as well as numerous aunts, uncles, and cousins.

Obituary - Helen Riddle

Helen Elizabeth Riddle, 94, Independence, MO, formerly of Butler, MO, died Friday, March 23, 2012 at the Kansas City Hospice House in Kansas City, MO. Funeral services will be held at 3:00 p.m. Sunday, March 25 at the First Christian Church in Butler, MO, with visitation from 1:30-3:00 p.m. at the church, under the direction of Atkinson Funeral Home, Adrian, MO. Burial will be in Oak Hill Cemetery, Butler. The family suggests contributions to the First Christian Church of Butler or the Kansas City Hospice Center.

Helen was born December 4, 1917 in Amsterdam, MO to John Franklin Lankford and Ina Cecil Bruce. She married William Fred Riddle in Butler, MO on September 14, 1935 and to this union two children were born. Fred owned and operated the Butler Auto Parts Store, with Helen being a homemaker for her family. She was devoted to her children and had a special love for her grandchildren. Helen was a member of the First Christian Church, Better Homes Club, Butler Country Club and loved playing bridge with many different groups around town.

Helen was preceded in death by her parents and her husband of 62 years, Fred, two sisters, Opal Poindexter and Anna Mae Furhman, and one brother, Bruce Lankford. She is survived by her son, William Fred Riddle Jr. and wife, Ann of Bradenton, FL; daughter, Francine Ballinger and husband, Forrest of Grain Valley, MO; 4 grandchildren, William Fred Riddle, III (Mary) of Farmington Hills, Michigan, Stephanie James of Commerce Township, Michigan, Aimee Mahoney (Mike) of Blue Springs, MO and Scott Summers (Kim) of Fair Oaks Ranch, TX; 6 great-grandchildren, Nicole and David James, Allison and Daniel Irwin and Joey & Kayly Summers; 2 brothers, Franklin Lankford (Dorothy) of Colorado and Harold Lankford (Pauline) of Springfield, MO.

Double Whammy tournament deadline March 27th...

The 2012 Adrian Project Prom Double Whammy basketball tournament is on the calendar for April 7th- the deadline to register is March 27th...

It will be held at the Adrian High School with four divisions of males and females with a 6 game guarantee. 15 points wins the game. There will also be concessions, free t-shirts and drawings.

Cost is $100 per team ages 19 and up (games played April 7th); $80 per team for 5th-6th grade and junior high (games played April 14th)

2nd Annual Drexel Business Fair next weekend

Everyone is invited to this FREE event- the 2nd annual Drexel Business Fair to be held March 31st  from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. at the Drexel Community Center. This will be an excellent opportunity for the public to get to know our local business folks in a fun, laid back environment. The day will include 'silent' entertainment from magician/hypnotist B.J. Tally.

Local businesses return 68% of their income back into the community they serve- come check them out, get to know them better and enjoy a fun day to boot.

If You Dye Eggs, Keep Them Safe

The week before Easter 20 million dozen extra eggs are purchased in the United States. If you are going to use these eggs for the hunt and then eat them it is important to follow food safety principles to prevent illness.

 “It doesn’t seem possible but hard cooked eggs can spoil faster than fresh eggs” said Tammy Roberts of University of Missouri Extension. Eggs are porous and bacteria can penetrate the shell. When they are washed at the plant a protective coating is added but that protective coating is washed away during boiling. Once again, it becomes easier for bacteria to enter the shell. For this reason it is important to refrigerate hard-cooked eggs within two hours of cooking. This means you’ll need to work quickly to get them dyed. 

Chris Moles Memorial Walk set for April 14th

Join us in honoring the memory of Chris Moles in the "Da' Bull-A-Thon Memorial Walk" on Saturday, April 14th at 9 a.m. at the Drexel school with proceeds from the event to support the Chris Moles Scholarship Fund.

T-shirt pick up and early registration will be Friday, April 13th from 3 p.m. to 7 p.m. or Saturday the 14th 7:30 a.m. to 9 at the main shelter house in the Drexel City Park. The walk will begin at the Drexel school and continue to the City Park for a day filled with activities, food and fun.

Entry fee is $20 and forms are available in the Drexel Star Light Shopper's Guide and the Xchanger this week.
