The Butler Fire Department will be hosting a class to train individuals to volunteer as workers in a Red Cross mass care shelter. These shelters will be used in the event of a disaster (such as the Joplin tornado) here in Bates County and require trained personnel to staff the shelter and perform duties such as setup, registration, and more.

The class will be held on Saturday, May 12th at the Butler fire station training room and will provide all the information needed for qualified volunteers. Classes start at 8:30 a.m. and are open to everyone over 18 years old. To register, call Terrence Wilson at 660-200-6387.

Choices in Education

From the desk of Senator David Pearce

There has been much discussion among lawmakers this session regarding education. As chair of the Senate Education Committee, it has been a big responsibility to provide for the educational needs of Missourians. In this changing world, we need to explore non-traditional methods of education in order to provide for the best interests of today’s students. We can achieve this by researching and utilizing common-sense options.

Gizzmos and gimmicks just don't work...

Gas prices around Butler and Adrian range from the upper $3.50's to the mid $3.60's or more- prompting some to seek ways to improve mileage and the pro's say they just don't work

The Internet is teeming with quick and easy ways to get more mileage out of your car. But mechanics and watchdogs urge caution for drivers across the country forced to fill ‘er up despite those rising prices: The actual results are not only dubious, but may even end up hurting your car.

“There’s a lot of black science out there,” said Bill Moss, a lifelong mechanic and director of the mechanics division at the Automotive Service Association.

Vidalia onions to be on sale soon...

Bates County Live spoke with Rick Hurshman this morning and got confirmation that the Bates County Shrine Club will again be selling Vidalia onions this year. Depending on when the shipment arrives, the onions will be on sale either the last week of April or first week of May- a 10 lb bag is just $10 and if needed, they will split a bag for $5.

Look for the Shriners at the Butler Walmart, also in Adrian, Appleton City and Amsterdam selling these delicious onions in the near future. Proceeds from the sales will go to benefit the Shriners Hospital.
