Obituary - Cheyanna Hellwig Koshko

Funeral services for Cheyanna Hellwig Koshko will be 2 p.m. Sunday, August 26, 2012 at Schowengerdt Funeral Chapel (660-679-6555) in Butler, Missouri. Cremation to follow services. The family will receive friends immediately following funeral services at Schowengerdt Chapel. Private family inurnment at later date. Contributions to Koshko Children Trust Fund c/o Kaleb Hellwig.

Cheyanna Marie Koshko, age 32 of Butler, Missouri died Thursday, August 23, 2012 at Bates County Memorial Hospital in Butler after a long and courageous battle with cancer. She was born May 29, 1980 to Robert L and Carolyn Ann Brown Hellwig in Butler.

Cheyanna is survived by her parents, Bob and Carolyn Hellwig of Butler, Missouri; one son, Judd Weston Koshko of the home; one daughter, Reegan Ann Koshko of the home; one brother, Kaleb Burk Hellwig and wife Jody of Springfield, Illinois; maternal grandparents, LV Jr. and Marie Brown of Appleton City, Missouri; a nephew, Kie; and niece, Kinley; and uncles and aunts. She was preceded in death by her paternal grandparents.

Dusk to Dawn Softball Tournament set for mid September

Butler Parks and Recreation will host a “ Dusk till Dawn” Co-Ed Softball Tournament in Mid- September. The cost of the 2 day tournament has been set at $125.00 per team with the dates set September 15th and 16th 2 p.m. till dawn (6 a.m.)

Grass fires pose serious threat

On Thur., Aug. 23 at approximately 11:57 A.M., the Butler Fire Dept. was dispatched to a field fire at CR 6002 @ CR 1003 N. of Butler. Mutual aid was requested from Adrian Fire Dept. for a brush truck.

On arrival, it was found that a 4-wheeler being used had caught fire, spreading to a field of corn stubble. High winds and low humidity caused rapid spread of the fire to the north. The fire burned approximately 100 bales of hay and several acres of pasture. At one point, the fire jumped State Rt. D east of Passaic.

Additional mutual aid was requested from Amsterdam Fire and Rich Hill Fire.

The last units left the scene at 4:05 P.M.

At approximately 3:17 P.M., a grass fire was reported at 422 S. Main in Butler. A brush unit from Rich Hill and tanker from Butler responded and extinguished this fire, which came dangerously close to structures. The last unit left the scene at approximately 3:38 P.M.

On an editorial note, grass fires have become a huge, dangerous problem here in the midwest. As you may have heard, there have been many fires along roadsides with the primary cause being a cigarette tossed out the window.

There are other causes, too, including careless burning of trash, using bbq grills and just plain accidents. However, a few days ago it was reported that bottle rockets were being shot from a moving vehicle on 71 highway that started a string of fires from Adrian to Passaic. Fortunately, our local fire departments moved into action quickly before the fires could pose a threat to any structures. 

Some relief may come in the form of rain starting today through most of the weekend. However, the fire threat is sure to return shortly after.

Please use common sense in this dire situation. Our local firefighters and those who own property along our roadways really appreciate it.

Butler City Wide Clean Up begins Sept. 10th

FALL 2012 CITY WIDE CLEANUP

The City of Butler, in cooperation with Bates County Disposal, will be conducting this citywide clean up for residential properties.

Bates County Disposal will pick up old furniture, appliances, paint, batteries and miscellaneous junk. The City of Butler will pick up your brush and limbs placed at the curb. You need to have your clean-up items or trash separate from your regular weekly trash but should still be at curbside. Brush needs to be in a pile separate from the rest of your trash and also placed at curbside. Leaves must be bagged in City of Butler leaf bags in order to be collected.

NOTE: This clean-up service is for residential properties only. We will NOT pick up tires or construction/building materials such as lumber, plywood or shingles. There is a one pickup load limit per household. Households with larger amounts must make special arrangements with Bates County Disposal by calling 679-5654. Items not picked up must be removed from the curb immediately.
PLEASE have your trash or brush ready at curbside by 6:00 a.m. on Monday of your clean-up week. They will not make return trips after they have completed a street. This is a free service provided by the City in the spring and fall of each year. Residents are reminded not to set out trash more than one week in advance or you may be subject to code enforcement action.
