Fire causes heavy damage to Butler home

Firefighters remain on the scene to look for hot spots
A two story home near the intersection of Dakota and Mechanic streets received heavy damage in a fire that broke out just before noon today.

It is unknown if the home was occupied at the time of the fire. A full report from Butler Fire Chief Jim Henry will be published as soon as it becomes available.

FM 92.1 back on the air

Repairs have been made and the airwaves are alive on FM 92.1 in Bates County and surrounding areas.

According to station manager Melody Thornton, this is the first time in nearly a half a century the station had been off the air for reasons beside an all out power failure.

Attention BBQ Queen and Princess candidates...

Young Ladies ages 11-18 are invited to sign up now to enter the contest to be the next Bates County championship BBQ Queen or Princess- you will receive 10 percent pay back from your ticket sales. All proceeds will go toward the Butler Area chamber of Commerce Scholarship fund. 

Princess candidates should be between 11 and 14 years old and Queen contestants are ages 15 to 18 years old. Entry forms are available at the Butler Chamber of Commerce office on the south side of the Butler square. The Annual BBQ Contest date has been set for October 26th and 27th and will be held at the Bates County Fairgrounds in Butler.

Foster Days coming the weekend of Sept. 8

The Village of Foster is bringing back the popular Foster Days Saturday, Sept 8th with a horseshoe pitching contest, blind draw double with trophy and payback for winners with sign in at 9:30 on main street. $5 entry fee, contest begins at 10 a.m. The garden tractor pull in Foster arena, weigh in at noon and pull at 1 p.m. Sanctioned by the Bates County Garden Tractor Pull Association. Stay for the 5 p.m. dinner of brisket, pork, potatoes, beans and slaw to be held at the Foster Community Building a free will donation will be appreciated.

FM 92 temporarily off the air; 1530 AM operational

Due to an electrical malfunction, the KMOE FM 92.1 transmitter will be off the air until sometime later tomorrow. Please note the AM transmitter is fully operational and will be resuming a normal broadcast day tomorrow starting at 6 a.m.

We will provide updates on the FM repair work as they become available. Note the normal broadcast day for the 1530 AM side is 6 a.m. to 7 p.m.

9/11 ceremony to be hosted by Adrian Fire Department

Bates County Veterans, all branches of the military and emergency responders will participate in the yearly 9/11 silent procession ceremony to be held in Adrian on September 11, 2012.

The silent procession will be held to honor those that gave their lives on September 11th, 2001 and is open to the public. It will be hosted by the Adrian Fire Department and Fire Chief Gary Disney invites all law enforcement officers, local fire departments, all veterans and all branches of the Military and Emergency responders to attend this Silent Procession Patriotic Ceremony to be held at 6:30 p.m. 

The procession will leave from the Adrian Manor Nursing Home in Adrian to Main Street, to the Adrian Optimist Building, where there will be a fly-over, guest speakers and refreshments to be served.

Those lining the streets to view the 9/11 silent procession are invited to attend the program that will follow at the Adrian optimist building.

Obituary- Russell Long

Russell H. Long, 57, Harrisonville, Missouri died Saturday, August 24, 2012. He was born October 21, 1954 in Independence, Missouri, a son of William H. and Violet (Cothern) Long. He was a 1973 graduate of Harrisonville High School. He is survived by his mother, Violet Long, East Lynne, Missouri, Three brothers, Vern Long, Harrisonville, Tim Long, Harrisonville, and Rick Long, Independence, Missouri. A sister, Sharon G. Walsh, Archie, Missouri. Cremation with no services scheduled at this time.
