Harrisonville teen charged for making threat to “shoot up the school”

A Harrisonville teen has been charged after allegedly making threats to kill his girlfriend and shoot other students at his school.
Jacob Vanderecken, 18, has been charged with one count of making a terrorist threat with reckless disregard of risk of causing evacuation/closure at Harrisonville High School, according to the Cass County Prosecutor’s Office.
Harrisonville Police received information in regard to a possible threat that Vanderecken had planned to kill himself at the school using a gun on April 11.
An assistant principal and the school’s resource officer made contact with the teen at his home before the school day had began on April 12, but Vanderecken denied making the treats in person, on Facebook, and by text messages.
The principal and police officer then escorted the teen to school, where the discussion about the threats continued.
At school, the teen’s former 16-year-old girlfriend provided a written statement to police, stating, “she was talking to Jacob on her cell phone, and that Jacob said that he was going to go to school and kill someone.”
According to the probable cause statement, the former girlfriend further stated that Vanderecken said he was going to kill her, then the entire school, and then hang himself.
The former girlfriend also reported to police that Vanderecken had threatened her, and her new boyfriend, earlier in March.
As police continued investigating the situation, another student also reported to law enforcement that Vanderecken had made suicidal threats on Facebook, and that she had received a text message from the former girlfriend that Vanderecken was going to “shoot up the school.”
During another conversation, Vanderecken admitted to school officials that he did threaten violence to himself, his former girlfriend, and the school, and was suspended for the remainder of the school year.
On April 16, police served a search warrant to Vanderecken’s home.
There, Vanderecken was taken into custody and placed on a 24 hour investigative hold and transported to the Cass County Jail.
Police did not find any actual firearms or notes, journals or writings by Vanderecken that indicated any threat, but did seize his cell phone, iPod, computers, and a small amount of marijuana and other drug paraphernalia in the house.
During questioning, Vanderecken later told police that he has been depressed, and his depression has been turning to anger toward people. He stated that he had recently had became angry with his girlfriend when she told him that she had a new boyfriend, and threatened to kill the other boy.
Vanderecken told police he thought his statements would scare others “a little” and that he “wanted to see how everyone would react,” according to statements in the probable cause statement.
Vanderecken remains in the Cass County Jail on a $25,000 cash or surety bond, and is set to appear in court Thursday, April 25.

Drugs Seized by the Butler Police Department

The Butler Police Department stopped a vehicle on Nursery Street in Butler on April 1st. A consent search was asked by the officers and was declined by the driver of the vehicle. A K9 from the Bates County Sheriff’s Office was then called to the scene. Once on the scene the occupants exited the vehicle and an exterior K9 sniff was conducted. The K9 gave a positive indication, or a “hit”, on the vehicle and the occupants were asked again if there was anything illegal in the vehicle.

One of the occupants then stated there was contraband in the vehicle. A further search located prescription pills that are schedule 2 narcotics. Also located was a large quantity of illegal mushrooms and six smaller individually packaged bags of illegal mushrooms with an approximate street value of around $4,000. The illegal mushrooms are fungi that contain psychoactive indole alkaloids that are considered to be hallucinogenic. The Butler Police Department would like to thank the Bates County Sheriff’s office for their assistance.

Bates County Sheriff Press Release about the Turkey

PRESS REPORT
April 18th, 2013

On April 15th, 2013, the Bates County Sheriff’s Office was dispatched to the residence of Rt. 1 Box 4B, Drexel, Missouri on a report of the residences trash blowing all over the neighborhood.

A Bates County Deputy arrived and noticed a large pile of trash and trash bags in the back yard of the property. The Deputy noticed that it appeared that animals had torn open some of the trash bags and trash was blown everywhere. The Deputy was walking up to the residence owned by Bradley Clevenger. At that time two turkeys began to attack the Deputy. The Deputy attempted to use less the lethal force but was unable to deter the birds. The Deputy attempted to stop the birds for several minutes but was forced to shoot one of the animals before they would quit their attack.

The Deputy then notified his supervisor of the incident. The supervisor made several attempts to contact the owner without success. The supervisor then hung a door hanger asking the owner to contact the Sheriff’s Office.

Previously the Bates County Sheriff’s Office has been dispatched to the same area on a report of these turkeys attacking the neighbors and their children. On that occasion the Complainant stated that the turkeys came onto her property and chased them and attacked her child leaving a large laceration on his face. Complainant stated that her children are afraid to go outside because of the birds.

The Sheriff’s Office has contacted the owner of the turkey about the turkey running loose in other people’s yards and he agreed at that time to control the turkeys.

After an internal investigation by the Bates County Sheriff’s Office, it has determined that the Deputy did not violate any department policies and has not violated any state statutes. The Deputy acted as any reasonable person would by taking steps to include less than lethal actions to protect himself.

The Bates County Sheriff’s Office has submitted both reports to the Bates County Prosecutor for possible charges.
