Optimist Student of the Month
The Adrian Optimist Club is pleased to
honor Students of the Month from the Miami, Ballard, and Adrian
schools. Criteria for this honor center on outstanding academic and
civic achievement and school spirit. Staff at each of the schools
make the selection, and their decision is based on expansion of these
criteria. Selection is based on the criteria, but a student
stepping up to a particular task will come to play in it. Each
student is honored with a certificate of recognition from the Adrian
Optimist Club and $20.00 in Adrian Chamber of Commerce “Chamber
Bucks”.
For April, the Miami student is Austin
Muller. Austin, a senior, is the son of Aaron and DaPhne Muller. In
school his activities include FFA, basketball, track, and
Courtwarming King. Outside of school Austin works hard as a Military
Policeman for the Missouri National Guard. Austin is inspired by and
desires to help people as a leader. Miami staff say Austin’s
attitude is contagious to all around him, and he inspires all who
know him. He is a positive role model and most of all a good, kind,
generous person.

Krista Smith, a junior, is the Adrian
student this month. Krista is the daughter of Edith McMurray. Her
favorite in school activity is Junior High basketball manager.
Teacher, Shaun Bruto credits Krista with facing many challenges in
her life and coming through the trials as a better person and
student. She does a very good job in the classroom as well as being
very helpful to her classmates and teachers. She has been the junior
high basketball manager for three years and does everything asked of
her and more. She shows up for practive at six in the morning when
there was no personal reward for doing so. One of her main duties
was to monitor the locker room while the girls were changing. Shaun
never had to worry about the locker room because she did an excellent
job with the girls. Krista finds inspiration in her teachers,
friends, and family. She truly desires continuing her education
beyond high school.

WEATHER UPDATE
A historical May snowstorm continues to impact the region providing one of the latest measured snows in recorded history. This storm system is due to the development of an anomalously strong storm system which has already brought near to below freezing temperatures and record snows to portions of the Northern Plains and Upper Midwest.
Locally, this system has already broken records on May 2nd as the high temperature of 41 degrees in Kansas City not only broke the record lowest high temperature for this date (48 in 1917), but has also temporarily broken the previous month of May lowest high temperature of 43 degrees back on May 5th, 1944.
Why do we say temporarily? Well forecast high temperatures for Friday May 3rd are only in the 30s. This will again break the monthly record for Kansas City.
Regarding snowfall, as of 9am in Kansas City we've received 0.5" of snow, this is only the third time we've experienced snow during the month of May. This is now the second time in recorded history for measurable snow to be reported in Kansas City during May. If we receive a trace or more of snow on May 3rd, this would represent the latest recorded snowfall in Kansas City history.
When is the last time it snowed this late in the year in recent history? A quick check of historical records indicates that the last time is snowed this late in the year was April 21, 1992.
