More New Laws for Missouri

Gov. Nixon signs several bills into law

JEFFERSON CITY – Gov. Jay Nixon today signed into law several bills relating to local governments, health education, motor vehicle insurance, pediatric cancer research and other issues.

The Governor signed:

Senate Bill 58, which clarifies land annexation guidelines for communities and authorizes certain nuisance abatement practices

Senate Bill 357, which simplifies the process for perfection of a mechanics lien for rented machinery and equipment and increases the period of time the lien claimant has to file the notice of lien from 5 to 15 days after commencement of use of the rented machinery and equipment.

Senate Bill 35, which authorizes a check-off box on the Missouri tax forms for contributions to the newly created Pediatric Cancer Research Trust Fund.

Senate Bill 216, which contains similar language to legislation already signed by the Governor to protect law enforcement officers’ and first responders’ First Amendment rights by allowing them to engage in political activity when they are off duty and not in official uniform.

House Bill 478, which revises statutory language related to credit union to more closely follow similar statutory language related to banks.

Weather Update: Mix Of Sun & Clouds, Continued Cool Today

Happy July!

Today will be a far cry from last July 1st. Highs this afternoon will range from the upper 70s to around 80 degrees. On this date last year, the high was 99 degrees at Springfield and Joplin and 100 degrees at West Plains and Vichy-Rolla!

Looking ahead to Independence Day, temperatures will be a few degrees warmer than today, but still quite pleasant with highs in the lower to middle 80s.

Vernon County Sheriff's Office New Partnership

Vernon County Sheriff's Deputies and staff with the Vernon County Ambulance District work together often.

"They get called to a scene and they're not sure if it's secure, so they want us to get there first. There's a lot of times that they're already on scene when we get there and we're just trying to assist them anyway we can," said Jason Mosher, Vernon County Sheriff.

Now, Sheriff Jason Mosher and Ambulance District Director James McKenzie are looking at ways to strengthen cooperation between their two agencies.

"They are going to put some of their EMT's on our S.W.A.T. team as medics, so they'll actually deploy with us. We'll have somebody right there on the scene to give assistance if somebody is injured," said Sheriff Mosher.

EMT's will also train both road deputies and jail staff in first aid and CPR.

"A lot of them had training in the academy, but that may have been years ago and they haven't done anything since then," said Sheriff Mosher.

McKenzie hopes by working with the deputies his staff can better learn situational awareness.

"What they're getting into. They can also just apply that back to regular EMS calls, going into hostile environments," said James McKenzie, Vernon County Ambulance District.

Both say it benefits the community to be able to pull their resources together.

"Being in a rural community, we don't have the luxuries like larger cities do. Having a lot of assets, having a lot of people from the sheriff's department, a lot of EMS personnel, or fire personnel, so you really have to work together," said McKenzie.

The sheriff says the next time their S.W.A.T. team needs to be deployed, a medic will come with them. Road deputies and jail staff will receive training in CPR and first aid throughout the summer.

Please Help Get A New Sign For Salem Cemetery

The sign at the Salem Cemetery in Foster Missouri has served its purpose for many years. It has, however, become worn and weathered and we would like to replace it with a large etched stone sign. This stone will be approx. 7 ft long and 4 feet wide. It will be etched with the words "Salem Cemetery Foster Mo" and set on two boulders. The cost of the sign is approx. $800 - $900. We need your help in raising the money to cover the cost of the sign. Someone has already volunteered his time, labor, and machinery to place the stone. All that is left is to raise the money to purchase the stone. As soon as the money is raised, the sign will be purchased and placed in the cemetery for all to enjoy. If you would like to donate Here is a link to the Fundrzr page we have made to collect donations: https://fundrazr.com/campaigns/dWTA0
