Two Suspects in Custody, Two Vehicles Recovered From Sunday Morning Thefts / Two More Vehicles Stolen Overnight in the Rural Ladue Areas

Two suspects have been arrested in connection with the thefts of three vehicles from rural Henry County on Sunday morning, while two additional suspects, who have been identified, remain at large. Two of the three stolen vehicles have also been recovered, with a possible location of the third one known to law enforcement.

At around 10:00 p.m., on Tuesday, August 13, Sgt. Michael Nelson and Deputy Chase Jackson arrested Melissa R. Specht, age 25, and Samantha A. Verhulst, age 18, both from Belton, Missouri, in connection with the thefts of the three pickup trucks, which occurred during the early morning hours on Sunday, August 11. Additionally, the 2013 and 2006 Ford F-350 pickups stolen from the rural Montrose area have been recovered in the Belton area, as well.

“Deputies are continuing to follow-up on several different leads today, with the assistance of local and Kansas City area law enforcement agencies. We are hoping to have our two additional suspects in custody very soon, as well as the recovery of the third stolen vehicle from the Sunday morning thefts”, Sheriff Oberkrom stated.

On Wednesday, August 14, at around 8:30 a.m., Deputy Antonio Thurman contacted a resident, who reported that a 2004 Ford F-150, white in color, bearing Missouri registration, was stolen from his residence in the 300 block of SW 351 in the Ladue area. Also stolen were the keys to another vehicle, however the second vehicle was not stolen from the residence.

Then at around 10:00 a.m., Deputy Thurman contacted a resident who lives in the 300 block of SW 201, also in the rural Ladue area, who reported that a 1996 Chevrolet S-10 Blazer, gray in color, was stolen from the residence, prior to 7:30 a.m. A debit card that had been left within the vehicle at the time of its theft, was used by the suspect(s) in the Clinton area during the early morning hours.

“The one common factor in all of these thefts is that the vehicles were all unlocked and the vehicle’s keys were within the vehicles, making the vehicles easy targets. I cannot stress enough how important it is to lock your vehicles, as well as removing the keys and any items of value from them as well”, Sheriff Oberkrom concluded.

Anyone with information concerning either of these property crimes is being urged to contact Sgt. Nelson with the Henry County Sheriff’s Office at (660) 885-7303 or the TIPS hotline at 1-800-825-8477 or by visiting www.hcsomo.com, then selecting TIPS section.

**UPDATE**

At around 11:30 a.m. today, the stolen 1996 Chevrolet S-10 Blazer was recovered abandoned in the area of MO-Highway 13 & SW 450.

Missouri State Fair bans rodeo clown who mocked Obama

JEFFERSON CITY, Mo. (AP) — The Missouri State Fair on Monday imposed a lifetime ban on a rodeo clown whose depiction of President Barack Obama getting charged by a bull was widely criticized by Democratic and Republican officials alike.

The rodeo clown won’t be allowed to participate or perform at the fair again. Fair officials say they’re also reviewing whether to take any action against the Missouri Rodeo Cowboy Association, the contractor responsible for Saturday’s event.

The entertainment during the bull riding contest featured a clown wearing a mask of Obama with an upside down broomstick attached to his backside. Spectators were asked if they wanted to see “Obama run down by a bull.” Many in the audience responded enthusiastically.

Numerous Missouri officials denounced the act after video and photos were posted online. Some Democratic Missouri lawmakers suggested Monday that there should be financial consequences for the fair.

The fair said in a written statement announcing the clown’s ban that he had engaged in an “unconscionable stunt” that was “inappropriate and not in keeping with the Fair’s standards.” The fair’s press release did not identify the clown.

At least one person defended him. David Berry, a Missouri Rodeo Cowboy Association member who was at Saturday’s event, described the clown as a friend and said there was nothing offensive or unusual about his actions. Berry said the Obama character was meant to look like a dummy and that rodeo clowns have long performed such acts, often imitating sitting presidents.

“The joke is not that it was the president,” Berry said. “They drag out this person dressed like a dummy and all of the sudden this dummy just takes off running. That’s what’s funny.”
