Press Release Jackson County Sheriffs Office: Burglary Involving Butler Man

 Thursday October 3, 2013 at approximately 4 PM, The Jackson County Sheriff’s Office received a call on a burglary in progress. The location of the incident was in the 40200 block of E. Campbell Road north of Oak Grove, Missouri.

The suspects were reportedly seen burglarizing the home and confronted by a relative of the homeowner. According to the witness, as the suspects were leaving, they attempted to run him over. He then shot toward the suspects.

A deputy was near I-70 and M–291 when he observed the suspects vehicle heading north on M-291.  After a short pursuit, the deputy was able to take the male suspect into custody.

At the same time, sheriff’s deputies received information a female had been dropped off at a local hospital with a gunshot wound.

We have been able to confirm the female was involved in the burglary. Therefore, both suspects are in custody.  The male was not injured.

I have had many of you inquire about the burglary that occurred on 10-03-2013 near Oak Grove where the female suspect was shot.

 Both suspects in the case have been charged by the Jackson County, Missouri Prosecutor’s Office

 They are identified as 41 year old Stephanie Mickelson of Raytown and 32 year old Michael Swatosh of Butler, Missouri

Obituary - Velma Nadine Beckerdite

Velma Nadine Beckerdite, 87, lifelong resident of Harrisonville, Missouri, died Monday, October 7, 2013 at her home. Funeral services will be held at 2:00 p.m. Thursday, October 10, 2013 at the Atkinson Funeral Home in Harrisonville with burial in Pleasant Ridge Cemetery, Harrisonville. Visitation will be 6:00-8:00 p.m. Wednesday, October 9 at the funeral home. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the American Cancer Society.

Velma was born December 21, 1925 on a farm outside of Harrisonville, Missouri, the daughter of Trucil and Minnie (Kohntopp) Hammontree. Her mother died in 1929. Trucil remarried in 1930 to Mildred (Holloway) Hedricks. Velma married Robert Beckerdite one year after high school. During WWII she worked as an inspector for Pratt & Whitney. She worked for the Kansas City Public Library until Robert returned from the war.

She and Robert farmed for a few years until they started a building business, where Velma designed many of the floor plans. She worked there until her divorce in 1973. Velma then worked as an inspector for Calmar in Lee’s Summit for 20 years until her retirement in 1993.

She traveled extensively throughout her life, including a trip to China, Japan and Hawaii in 1982 and another trip to Russia. She loved family, friends, books, music and genealogy. She recently planned and attended her 70th high school class reunion.

Velma was preceded in death by her parents, a brother, Eugene Hammontree and step-brothers, Bill and Bob Hedricks. She is survived by four children, Anne Gentry, Harrisonville, Charles Beckerdite and his wife, Joan, Versailles, Missouri, Melinda Hipple, Baldwin City, Kansas and James Beckerdite and his wife, Cheryl, Harrisonville; one brother, Harold Hammontree; 5 grandchildren, Megan (Gentry) Rallis, Clint, Eric and Cameron Beckerdite and Aaron Hipple and one great-grandson, Maddox Rallis.

Obituary - Janette Jean Johnston

Janette Jean Johnston, 85, Peculiar, Missouri, died Monday, October 7, 2013 at Belton Regional Medical Center in Belton, Missouri, surrounded by her loving family. Funeral services will be held at 11:00 a.m. Friday, October 11, 2013 at the Atkinson Funeral Home in Harrisonville, Missouri. Burial will be in Wills Cemetery in Peculiar. Visitation 6:00-8:00 p.m. Thursday at the funeral home. Contributions to American Cancer Association.

Janette was born July 26, 1928 in St. Aubert, Missouri, the daughter of Everett Allen and Betty E. (Harrison) Quick. She was a long time resident, 38 years, of Belton, Missouri. Janette married Wayne Nelson Johnston on April 13, (Friday the 13th), 1946 in Jefferson City, Missouri.

Janette had worked for the Visiting Nurse Association and Nursing Care, Inc. She loved to garden, crochet, read, cook and play cards and other games. She enjoyed growing flowers and working in her garden.

Janette was preceded in death by her parents, one son, Wayne Johnston, Jr. and 9 brothers and sisters. She is survived by her husband of 67 years, Wayne Johnston, of the home; children, Linda Kihn, Belton, Missouri, Alverda McReynolds, Grove, Oklahoma, Richard Johnston, Cleveland, Missouri, Diana Boos, Peculiar, Missouri; 14 grandchildren and 21 great-grandchildren.

Street Closed In Butler

The Butler Water Department will have South Main Street Closed today from Adkinson Street to Oak Street here in Butler. Unknown how the long the street will be closed. Bates County Live will update when the road is open again.

Appleton City Man Arrested On Stealing Charge

Early Saturday morning, Oct. 5, Timmy Mcintire, 21, Appleton City, was arrested on a felony charge of first degree burglary following an incident at 312 West Second Street, Appleton City. A deputy responded and met with residents of the home, Janet White and Sarissa Loney, who explained Mcintire was intoxicated and was asked to leave several times, but he refused. Sheriff Keeler said the individuals explained there was an altercation and after, they were able to get Mcintire out of the residence. White and Loney stated Mcintire was standing on the porch and started punching the window and broke it. They said Mcintre was reaching through the broken window trying to grab them and eventually entered the residence and there was another altercation prior to Mcintire being pushed out of the residence. Mcintire fled when a call to law enforcement was made. 

Mcintire was located behind his residence on First Street. He stated he broke the window by accident and never “touched” White or Loney. Mcintire said he was “just” trying to get his new hat before he left. He was placed into custody and booked into the jail. Mcintire was released later the same day. Formal charges are pending.
