Looking at a cool and potentially wet end to the work week as showers spread across east central Kansas through central and southern Missouri. Weekend will be much improved as warmer temperatures return for Saturday and Sunday.

Two suicides occur




According to Henry County Sheriff J. Kent Oberkrom, his office is investigating the deaths of two individuals in separate incidents as suicides on Tuesday, October 15, 2013.

At 7:48 a.m. Deputy Jordan Stinnett and Deputy Lonnie Barton responded to 207 North Windsor Street, Windsor, Missouri on a reported person who had hung himself in a garage area.

At the scene, deputies discovered the body of Larry E. Roark, age 38, of the home.  According to the Sheriff’s Office report, Roark was found by his wife when she went looking for him.  The body was transported to the Hadley Funeral Home

At 11:50 a.m. Deputy Kaleb Richerson and Deputy Chase Jackson responded to 546 East Highway 7 on a reported person who had shot himself.

At the scene, deputies discovered that Walter D. Langdon, age 54, of the home was suffering from a gunshot wound.  Langdon was found to be breathing and he was subsequently transported by medical personnel to Kansas City by air ambulance.  Langdon passed away the following the morning from his injuries.

JEFFERSON CITY, Mo.  The public is invited to attend a program and learn about the battle that took place in the area of Battle of Island Mound State Historic Site near Butler on Saturday, Oct. 26. Sponsored by Missouri State Parks, the program will begin at 4 p.m. and will feature a park interpreter who will provide a historical account of the events that took place. After the talk, visitors can follow along with the interpreter as he guides an informative walk around the site’s 0.6 mile Courage Trail.
The Battle of Island Mound marked the first time that African-American troops were engaged in Civil War combat. Battle of Island Mound State Historic site encompasses Fort Africa, where the 1st Kansas Colored Volunteer Infantry were camped in 1862 before a pitched battle with pro-Confederate forces near a low hill named Island Mound.
A visit to Battle of Island Mound State Historic Site is also a great opportunity to log miles as a part of the Governor’s 100 Missouri Miles challenge. To celebrate Missouri’s distinction as the “Best Trails State” by American Trails and to encourage Missourians to enjoy the outdoors, Governor Jay Nixon and First Lady Georganne Nixon are inviting Missourians to join them in completing 100 Missouri Miles of outdoor physical activity by the end of the year.

DONATED THEME BASKETS NEEDED FOR FALL FESTIVAL:


The Butler Senior Center is asking for your donated “Theme Baskets’’ for their auction at the 10th Annual Community Wide Senior Fall Festival being held on Sunday, October 27th.

A theme basket is anything you want it to be. You could, for example, make a salon basket with beauty supplies in it. For another instance, an automotive basket with automotive products.  Food makes a lovely basket, or a candy basket, or how about a Halloween basket? The possibilities are limitless.  You can deliver your baskets, prior to the fall festival, to the Senior Center at 611 West Mill street, located just behind the Chinese Restaurant.

THE SENIOR FALL FESTIVAL


The 10th Annual Community Wide Senior Fall Festival will be held on Sunday,  October 27th at 11:30 am at the Bates County Fairgrounds Youth Building.  An ‘All you can eat’ dinner will start at 11:30 am and go until the food runs out.  Music will be provided by the Butler High School Pop Chorus to coincide with their auction of theme baskets.  Free will donations are greatly appreciated as the proceeds will benefit services for the Bates County Seniors. Dine in or Carry out available!
