Man accused of murdering Parsons Kansas mother and children appears in court

David Bennett Jr. is accused of killing Cami Umbarger and her three children. He appeared in court through a video feed from the county jail. 

During the hearing Bennett wanted to talk about his case, but Labette County District Judge Robert Fleming warned him against making statements in court that could affect his case. 

That didn't stop Bennett, though. "I understand I got to probably go to trial and so forth. But I was just curious, is it necessary to basically have to sit here until this whole trial and get this thing figured out," he said. 

The judge told him he could only get out of jail if he could pay his bail. He is being held on a $5 million bond. Bennett hasn't been formally charged yet and will be back in court next week. The judge said that prosecutors have received additional time to file charges against him because of the Thanksgiving holiday and the complicated nature of the case.

Missouri State Highway Patrol Press Release: Forecast Calling For Winter Weather: Drive With Caution

In several areas of the state, the forecast is calling for winter weather to arrive later this week. The Missouri State Highway Patrol encourages motorists to plan ahead and drive safely or not at all during inclement weather.

Is your vehicle ready for winter? Check the battery, heater, defroster, lights, hoses, belts, brakes, oil, tires, wipers, and fluid levels. Before you travel, gather an ice scraper, tire chains, battery booster cables, blankets, flashlight, and a bag of sand or kitty litter to place in your trunk. Emergencies cannot be predicted, but planning ahead can help you if one should arise. Missouri’s Road Condition Report (1-888-275-6636) can help you plan your route--before you leave. You may also view MoDOT’s Road Condition Map by going to the Patrol’s web site www.mshp.dps.mo.gov and clicking on the Road Condition icon.

Drivers: Take the time to clean snow and ice completely from your vehicle. Make sure the windows are completely cleared to ensure visibility. Allow extra driving time for you to reach your destination at a slow, safe speed. Remember: Missouri law states if you’re using your windshield wipers, your headlights must be turned on. It takes only a second to turn on your vehicle’s headlights. That second could make you more visible to other drivers and prevent a traffic crash.

Keep in mind that Section 307.020 RSMo. states lighted lamps are required "from a half-hour after sunset to a half-hour before sunrise and at any other time when there is not sufficient light to render clearly discernible persons and vehicles on the highway at a distance of 500 feet ahead."

When inclement weather hits, please adjust how you drive, so that you continue to "exercise the highest degree of care." For instance: Stopping quickly in the winter on snow-covered or icy roads is next to impossible. Use care by increasing your following distance as you drive. Section 304.012 RSMo. directs motorists to exercise the highest degree of care on Missouri's roadways. This part of Missouri law states, "Every person operating a motor vehicle on the roads and highways of this state shall drive the vehicle in a careful and prudent manner and at a rate of speed so as not to endanger the property of another or the life or limb of any person and shall exercise the highest degree of care."

Ask yourself if the speed you're traveling is safe for the weather conditions. Slow down when driving in snow or on ice. Driving the speed limit may not be "exercising the highest degree of care" during inclement weather; driving over the speed limit never is.

If you become stranded or see another vehicle stranded on the side of the road with passengers, please call the Missouri State Highway Patrol emergency number at 1-800-525-5555 or dial *55 on a cellular phone. These numbers ring at the nearest troop headquarters.

Planning ahead and being a courteous driver are important every day. In winter driving conditions, this becomes crucial. Please slow down, pay attention, and wear your seat belt.

Of course, no matter how safely you drive, you can’t control other drivers. Thus, the Patrol encourages motorists to protect themselves from all types of hazardous drivers by making sure everyone in the vehicle is properly restrained in a seat belt or child restraint. Click It 4 Life!

CUSTOMER APPRECIATION DAY AT NAPA IN DREXEL

 

NAPA in Drexel will be having customer appreciation days on Friday and Saturday, December 13^th and 14^th. The store is located at 125 E. Main Street in Drexel and chili will be served both days from 11:00 – noon. Napa in Drexel will be open on Friday, December 13^th from 8 – 6 and from 8 – noon on Saturday December 14^th. Stop by either of these two days.

 

CITY OF BUTLER RECEIVES $195,625 GRANT

State Representative Randy Pike presented a grant award to Butler Mayor, Don Malan. The city of Butler was selected to receive a $195,625 grant from the Community Development Block Grant program through the State of Missouri, Department of Economic Development.

 

The grant funds will be matched with city funds to demolish 35 dilapidated residential and 3 commercial structures city wide. The city received the grant with the help of the Kaysinger Basin Regional Planning Commission who partnered with the city to complete the successful grant application. Kaysinger will also be conducting the administration of this grant.The city hopes to start the bidding process with contractors by the January 2014.

SPIRIT OF CHRISTMAS CONCERT IN GERMANTOWN

 

The annual Spirit of Christmas concert at St. Ludger Church in Germantown, MO will be held on December 14 at 2 PM.  Performers this year include several community soloists, duets, quartets, and a flautist. Also performing this year is the Appleton City Community Choir, the Immaculate Conception Choir, and the Keys to the Music, the Prairie Kid Family and the Butler Brass.  

Prior to the performance lunch will be served (reservations are required call 660-492-3169). 

 

Come join them in the beautifully decorated historic building. The building is on the national historic register and shares the architecture and history of the area.

Miami FCCLA Collecting Items For The Ronald McDonald House

 Caitlin Slattery from the Miami FCCLA is collecting items for the Ronald McDonald House of Kansas City! The Ronald McDonald House provides a Home-Away-From-Home for the families of sick children, free of charge. They rely on donations and fundraisers such as those that Caitlin Slattery is collecting to keep providing a safe place for those families. The items being collected include pop tabs, hygiene, food, household items (deodorant, toothpaste, detergent/soap, canned goods, cleaning products, etc.) as well as books. If you would like to aid in her collection, it would be greatly appreciated.
