Weather Update: More Snow for Saturday & Sunday


Another round of light snow is expected Saturday through early Sunday, resulting in around 1/2" of snow in far north central and northwest MO, 1-2" in and around the KC metro, and 2-4" across parts of central MO. Also prepare for much colder temperatures early next week, including possible wind chills around or below -20 early Monday morning

Miami School Closed Tomorrow


The Miami R-1 School District will be closed tomorrow Friday January 3rd , 2014 due to the weather conditions. Bates County Live will update all school closing and business closing when they become available to us.

Kansas City Man Hurt In Cass County Crash


Around 2:20pm this afternoon the Missouri State Highway Patrol along with The Belton Police Department responded to a 1 vehicle accident on Southbound I-49 at 58 Highway in Belton. The accident occurred when the 2009 Kenworth driven by 23 year old Daniel Davis of Kansas City Missouri was traveling Southbound on I -49 and drove off the right side of the roadway and struck a tree. The driver was wearing a seatbelt and was transported by Belton ambulance to Belton Regional Medical Center with Minor Injuries.

Obituary - Lucille Wheeler


Funeral services for Lucille Wheeler will be 1:00 PM Saturday, January 4, 2014 at Mullinax Funeral Home (660-679-0009) in Butler, Missouri with Pastor Ron Dunlap officiating. There is no visitation. Lucille Kathryn Wheeler of Butler, Missouri passed away January 2, 2014 at Heartland of Willow Lane in Butler. She was born in Moorehouse, Missouri, daughter of Richard Whitney and May (Brogdon) Solly.
 
Lucille was preceded in death by her parents; and her husband, Thomas Cole Wheeler in 1997; four brothers, and one sister. She is survived by her daughter Carolyn Ghys and husband Art of Butler; and nephew Phillip Solly and wife Dana of Soddy Daisy, Tennessee. A more complete obituary will be published as the information becomes available.

Are You a Woman Who Loves Farming?
 
 
 Do you want to learn how to run your farm as a business?  Do you want to learn how to do a better job of marketing or how to pass the farm to the next generation?  If so then join Annie’s Project, a class designed just for farm women.  This class is being offered by University of Missouri Extension including seven evening sessions on Tuesdays, January  28, February 4, 11, 18, 25, March 4, and 11.  The classes will be held from 6:00 to 9:00 PM in the Crowder College computer lab in Nevada, MO. 
 
Items being discussed include:  economics of land ownership, land rental contracts, understanding Missouri fence laws, livestock & grain marketing, risk management, farm record keeping & taxes, business plans, how property is titled, insurance needs, financial statements, retirement and estate planning, farm , learning to communicate and work with different personalities, utilizing computers and the internet on the farm, and much more.  The course will be taught my University of Missouri Extension specialists and will include guest speakers. 
 
The goal of the class is to empower farm women and help them make better management decisions through learning experiences, networking, and by utilizing critical financial resources.  Participants come from a wide range of backgrounds and experiences which gives them the opportunity to learn as much from one another as they do from instructors. 
 
The class is being partially funded by a grant from the North Central Risk Management Center, however there is a cost of $75 for the 7-week course to cover additional expenses.  Class size will be limited to the first 20 women who register to ensure sufficient group interaction and one-on-one assistance.
