St. Clair County Sheriff’s Office Press Release: Deputies respond to burglary in progress

On Dec. 31, Darrell Stevens, Jr., 34, Osceola, was arrested after deputies were called to a burglary in progress at the Earnest Burwell Jr. residence at 250 Boundary Street, Osceola. Deputies were dispatched to the residence at 11 p.m. with information the suspect had gained entry. When deputies arrived on scene, they located Stevens standing outside attempting to enter the residence through a broken window with Burwell pushing Steven’s back each time he would lean into the residence. Stevens was bleeding and had several lacerations from broken glass.

The investigation revealed Burwell allegedly hit Steven’s with a six-foot long walking stick after he attempted to gain entry to Burwell’s residence through the window. Sheriff Keeler explained Steven’s attempted to flee and resist deputies while being taken into custody. He was transported to Sac Osage Hospital, Osceola, for treatment of his injuries received while attempting to gain entry into the residence.

On Jan. 1, Steven’s was released from the hospital to the custody of deputies and was booked into the St. Clair County Jail on several charges related to the incident. On Jan. 2, a felony arrest warrant was issued for Stevens charging him with first degree burglary, a class B felony; assault/attempted assault on law enforcement, a class C felony; and resisting/interfering with an arrest for a felony, a class D felony. Bond was set at $10,000 cash or surety. He was arrested on the warrant on Jan. 4 and is currently being held in the jail.

St. Clair County Sheriff’s Office Press Release: Warrant Arrest

On Jan. 6, Sherrie Doody, 49, Appleton City, was arrested at the St. Clair County Courthouse on a warrant for class C felony theft/stealing. Bond was set at $10,000 cash or surety. The charge stems from an incident in July 2013 when Charlie Walden reported approximately $3,000 in scrap metal stolen from property on NW 1000 Road. She was released on her own recognizance the same day and a court date was scheduled for Jan. 22.

Be Cautious While Heating

When temperatures dip to frigid lows, people will do almost anything to stay warm. But sometimes those choices are just as dangerous as the cold itself. You only need three things to start a fire: heat, fuel and oxygen.

Space heaters alone account for one-third of heating fires.

Do:
Blow candles out before you leave a room
Maintain a three-foot clearance around space heaters in every direction
Dispose of ashes in metal container
Check/replace batteries in smoke and carbon monoxide detectors.

Don't:
Carry a candle in place of a flashlight
Use an extension cord for space heater
Store ashes indoors
Grill indoors
Use the oven or stove to heat your home
