Driver running from cops caught; traffic stop sends another man to jail
The male subject was identified as Ryon A Hough, 27, from Rockville Mo. Hough was arrested and is being held at the Bates County Jail on a $10,000 cash or surety bond. He was charged with one count of possession of a controlled substance which is a class C felony.
Later the same day, a Bates County Sheriff’s Deputy attempted to make traffic stop on a 1992 Toyota Camry that was headed south bound on interstate I49 just south of Rich Hill Mo by activated his. The driver of the vehicle refused to stop for the deputy. The deputy pursued the vehicle from Bates County into Vernon County until it came to a stop at the Horton exit. The vehicle caught on fire and burned until the fire department arrived and extinguished the fire. The driver exited the vehicle and the Deputy was able to apprehend him.
The driver was identified as Steven A Horning, 30, from Eldorado Springs, Mo. Horning had three failure to appear felony warrants from Cedar County and one failure to appear felony warrant from Dade County. Bates County charges are currently pending.

Veterans Memorial Tribute draws large crowd Saturday
"The carrying of banners is a custom of all people, all ages" said Nathan Agnew in front of a crowd of several hundred, as the Flag Ceremony began during the Veterans Memorial dedication on Saturday morning. Agnew, Past Exalted Ruler of the Bates County Elks lodge 2653 opened the ceremony went on to describe, in detail, the history of the American Flag and it's true meaning.
Agnew was followed by Mayor Don Malan who offered many thanks to the Bates County Elks Lodge 2653 for their hard work and continued dedication that brought the idea of a monument to a full blown reality. Malan reminded onlookers of a Reagan quote "that freedom is never more than a generation away from extinction". At that, offered thanks to each and every Bates County veteran for their service.
Presiding Commissioner Donna Gregory took the podium and thanked everyone involved, and also recognized all veterans present at the event. She also spoke of how fitting is was that this ceremony fell on June 14th, Flag Day, which commemorates the adoption of the U.S. Flag 237 years ago.
Other speakers included Terry Agnew who gave a detailed account of bringing the monument to reality; and Blaine Diehl of the Missouri Elks Lodge who commended #2653 for a job well done.
Also present were the Rich Hill American Legion with a gun salute, local boy scouts, Elks Lodge members and many local veterans. The monument is located on the northwest corner of the Butler square.

Creighton Woman Injuried in early morning Bates County Accident
Around 7:20am this morning the Missouri State Highway Patrol along with The Adrian Fire Department, Bates County EMS and The Bates County Sheriffs Office responded to a 1 vehicle accident on 18 Highway West of Adrian .4 miles East of FF Highway.The Accident occurred when the 1994 Ford driven by 43 year old Tammye E. Quick of Creighton, Missouri was traveling East bound on Missouri 18 Highway when she traveled off the left side of the roadway and struck a embankment.
She was taken to The Bates County Memorial Hospital by ambulance with minor injuries. The vehicle had extensive damage and was towed from the scene by Adrian Tire and Lube.
Henry County Sheriffs Office: Emergency Driving Training
Members of the Henry County Sheriff's Office attended emergency vehicle driver training this past Saturday, June 14, 2014. The training, hosted by the Missouri Sheriff's Association in conjunction with the Missouri Department of Highway Safety, is an eight hour course that includes classroom instruction and emergency vehicle operations.
The driving portion of the training was held at the Clinton High School parking lot and including evasive steering, non-braking maneuvers, backing and several other low speed driver skills steering skills. This training is an annual event sponsored by the Sheriff's Office to give deputies the experience they need to properly handle emergency vehicle operations.
4-H Press Release: Bates County Demonstration Day

MO – June 16, 2014) - Three Bates County 4-H members participated in
Demonstration Day which was held on Saturday, June 14, at the First
Christian Church in Butler. According to Alan J. Mundey, 4-H Youth
Specialist, the results are as follows:

Osage Valley Electric Co-op received a report of a member getting a call from someone claiming to be from Osage Valley and demanding payment for a past due amount. This is a scam; do not give them any information. While we do make calls reminding people of their past due balance, we instruct them to call the secure automated line to make a payment. We do not ever take or ask for credit card information over the phone.
