Obituary - Linda Barnhill

Memorial services for Linda Barnhill will be 2 p.m. Tuesday, September 9, 2014 at Schowengerdt Funeral Chapel (660-679-6555) in Butler, Missouri. There is no visitation. In lieu of flowers, contributions to D.A.V. or American Cancer Society. 

Linda Lee Barnhill, age 64 of Harrisonville, Missouri died Thursday, September 4, 2014 at University of Kansas Hospital in Kansas City, Kansas. She was born August 21, 1950 to Leroy Henry and Dona LoRee Myers Fritts in Hays, Kansas. 

Linda is survived by two sons, Tad Bitner of Kearney, Missouri and Dustin Hockett of Adrian, Missouri; two daughters, Stacey Kimberling and husband Paul of West Plains, Missouri and Jamie Lindsay Long of Maryville, Missouri; her mother, Donna Abnot and husband Kenneth of Harrisonville, Missouri; two brothers, Trent Fritts of Kansas City, Missouri and Robert Fritts and wife Laura of Butler, Missouri; one sister, Jan Curnutte and husband Alan of Louisburg, Kansas; three stepbrothers, Robert Perrymann and wife Gail of Urich, Missouri, Terry Perrymann and wife Dee of Adrian, Missouri and Garry Perrymann of Amsterdam, Missouri; two grandchildren, Nate and Lizzie Bitner; two stepgranddaughters, Bobbie Wooderson and Ashley Kimberling; and step great-grandchildren, Kate Wooderson and Sam Wooderson. She was preceded in death by her father; Leroy Henry “Herb” Fritts; one infant sister, Kimberly Fritts; one stepbrother Vince Risner.

Lights back on at South Side Barber Shop...

Well known Butlerite Lowell Logan had been cutting hair at South Side Barber Shop since 1950; and since his passing this past March, many folks wanted to see this landmark business remain open in his honor.

Local businessman Greg Mullinax is one of those people.

Mullinax recently announced that the Southside Barber Shop is reopening with a complimentary level of the service provided by Lowell Logan for over 60 years in the same location.

In his own words, Mullinax penned this note on Facebook today:

As we look forward to a fun-filled weekend in Butler, I have an announcement which is very special to me personally:
As many know, with the sudden passing of Lowell W. Logan on March 24, our town lost a true pillar and friend to so many. With that, the South Side Barber Shop went dark and remained so through the summer. While Lowell is bitterly missed and can never be replaced, I am pleased to report that haircuts will resume tomorrow at the shop everyone loved for so long.

We will have a soft opening tomorrow from 9-2, with a grand opening announced later. I'll be busy with Huckster's Day of course, so my good friend Cindy Kukovich Billings will be behind the chair. With 19 years of experience, Cindy is highly capable of any hair style or need! Cindy will continue in the shop on a daily basis, and as soon as my license becomes active, I'll be joining her in the 2nd chair as my time allows.

Stop by and say hello tomorrow. We've created a vintage, classy shop we think you will enjoy - while still reminiscent of the South Side everyone remembers and loves.

Finally, you know that my staff and I will continue to remain dedicated to you and your family at Mullinax Funeral Homes; our commitment will never change. I am excited, though, to bring another quality business back to service in Butler.

Arthur Dennis Unruh, age 91 of Uvalde, Texas peacefully passed to his reward Thursday, September 4, 2014. He was born April 8, 1923 to Elmer and Melinda Nightengale Unruh in Greensburg, Kansas. 

Arthur is survived by his wife, Marjorie Unruh of Uvalde, Texas; two sons, Bruce Unruh and wife Marilyn of Uvalde, Texas and Donavon Unruh and wife Priscilla of LaPryor, Texas; one brother, Eldon Unruh and wife Elnora of Naples, Flordia; two brothers-in-law, Freddie Schmidt and wife Peggy and Paul Unruh, all of Hitchinson, Kansas; one sister-in-law, Joann Unruh of Butler, Missouri.

Hunger on the Rise in Missouri

Jefferson City, MO – New data from the U.S. Department of Agriculture shows that more Missouri families are struggling to put food on the table, with the state experiencing one of the biggest increases in food insecurity in the nation last year. 

 There's a hunger crisis in Missouri and it's only getting worse, according to a new report from the U-S Department of Agriculture. It finds the state is losing ground despite efforts to help families put food on the table. Jeanette Mott Oxford with the Missouri Association for Social Welfare says when it comes to feeding its most vulnerable residents, the state is moving in the wrong direction.

"Missouri has the second-highest growth in food insecurity in the country, tied with Tennessee for second place."

  According to the data, one in six Missouri households struggled with hunger last year, making the state one of eight in the nation where the rate of food insecurity is significantly higher than the national average of roughly 14 percent.

 Mott Oxford says she feels the trend highlights the need to strengthen the food safety net, including increasing federal food assistance benefits and expanding child nutrition programs.

"Like school breakfasts and lunches, summer feeding programs, food stamps. Those programs provide over $20 worth of aid to struggling families for every dollar that we're raising privately with charity. "

  Among the nearly 17-percent of Missouri households the survey found to be faced with hunger, more than half were identified as having “very low food security." The term means they have budget issues severe enough to skip meals, both for adults and kids, on a more frequent basis.

Ohio Street United Methodist Church Free Haircuts

The Ohio Street United Methodist Church will once again be giving “free haircuts” this Saturday, September 6th beginning at 9am to children in our community. If you know someone in need of a haircut stop by 7 East Dakota Street, next to West Central. It will be on a first come, first serve basis. Free t-shirts to the 1st 40 grade school kids that stop by. 

The free haircuts also include high school students. Thanks to the Ohio Street United Methodist Church members that are providing this service to the community.
