He was selected to attend the USAF Academy in June 1970, and graduated in June 1974 as a 2nd Lieutenant, USAF, with a BS in Computer Science. He got to fly a T-41 (Cessna 172) 25 hours with some solo time at the Academy, and passed the evaluation, so after graduation he went on to pilot training for 1 year, flying a T-37 and T-38 for 200 hours of twin-engine jet time. John chose C-141 Cargo jets (4-engine) to fly, and ended up flying them for 18 years, over 4,000 hours; the last 13 years he was an Instructor Pilot, and taught over 1000 pilots to fly the C-141. He retired as a Major, with nearly 21 years active duty.
John got to fly the C-141 to almost every continent; US, Panama, Canada, Puerto Rico, a dozen Pacific Islands, most of SE Asia, Thailand, Hong Kong, New Zealand, Australia, Diego Garcia Naval Air Station (Indian Ocean), Iran, Saudi Arabia, Egypt, Europe, England, Spain, and Turkey. His crew almost made it to Antarctica, but the weather went bad, and we had to turn back without landing there. John flew in Desert Storm, Jan ‘91. God has led and protected us through many miles and many years. It is through His grace and mercy that we are here now.
The assembly will pay tribute to all branches of the military for their duty and sacrifices to our country and its citizens. After this observance, all Veterans and their spouses are invited to eat lunch in the cafeteria with FCCLA members. Please join the Miami R-1 School District to help honor the past and present U.S. Veterans.

| Matthew Scott Chism |
(October 18, 1989 - November 2, 2014)
Matthew Scott Chism Stockton, MO was the second child of Rodney and Pam Chism and was born on October 18, 1989. He was born in Bolivar, MO at Citizens Memorial Hospital. Tragically, on Sunday, November 2, 2014, he was shot and killed in the line of duty as a Cedar County Deputy Sheriff.
Matthew was raised in the Stockton community. His childhood was spent helping his mother and father tend to the family farm, feeding cattle, hunting deer, cutting hay, and playing with his brother Joshua. As a boy, Matthew was energetic and tenacious. He was even a bit of a boy daredevil, known to drive his tricycle and, later, bicycle off of the edge of the Chism house’s concrete front porch.
As Matthew grew up, he participated in many school activities. These included baseball, football, Peer Tutoring, FFA and many others. As a young man, Matthew had an incredible sense of humor and could brighten anyone’s day with his silly charm and antics. He graduated from Stockton High School in May of 2008.
Matthew entered the Law Enforcement Academy at Missouri Southern State University in Joplin, MO in January of 2011. He had dreamt of becoming an officer ever since he was a boy, after participating in the D.A.R.E. program lead by Leon Dwerlkotte. It was at that young age that Matthew decided to become an officer of the law. He realized that childhood dream and graduated from the Law Enforcement Academy in May of 2011.
Matthew then married the love of his life, Ashley Brook Dixon, on July 30, 2011 in Stockton. He was an incredibly loving husband, and the spark that Matt and Ashley shared was undeniable. He and Ashley enjoyed hunting, fishing, and anything outdoors together. On September 25, 2012, Hunter Glen Chism was born. As a father, Matthew was second to none. Matthew loved his son Hunter fiercely. Hunter loved his daddy.
Soon after, Matthew truly began to realize his professional aspirations. He joined the Cedar County Sheriff’s Department in January of 2013. Eager, ready, and willing to serve, Matthew was a superb Deputy Sherriff. As an officer, he always went the extra mile. He saw each new day as an opportunity to grow and to learn. Matthew loved his career. He knew it was a calling, and he took that calling seriously.
As the head of a Christian family, both Matthew and Ashley attended the Assembly of God Church in Stockton, MO.
Matthew was a man of great character and integrity. He was fair and honest. He was funny and energetic. He was a man of great courage and bravery. Full of genuine devotion and sacrifice, Matthew ultimately gave his life to protect and serve.
Matthew is survived by his wife Ashley Dixon Chism of Stockton, MO, his son Hunter Glen Chism, mother Pamela Sue Chism and father Rodney Harold Chism of Stockton, MO, grandmother Myrna Chism and grandfather Richard Chism of Stockton, MO, brother Joshua Glen Chism of Waynesville, MO and a multitude of other relatives and friends.
